Former Trump aides are finding it difficult to get jobs post-fascist insurrection

Donald Trump

There have been some announcements from former Trump administration fascists. Sarah Huckabee Sanders landed on her feet in Arkansas and plans to run for governor there. Kayleigh McEnany is already talking to Fox News, although that might get tricky. Sean Spicer is finding a home in alt-right conservative media. But what of all of the Trump loyalists who were with him to the bitter and violent end? What about all of the staffers who changed diapers, delivered cheeseburgers and Diet Cokes and helped Trump organize a violent insurrection in an attempted coup? Well, those people are having a tough time finding work! Donald Trump has not put any organization together, which has left former Trumpers largely adrift.

As Trump gingerly charts out next steps, he is doing so increasingly alone. Two of his most trusted confidantes, Johnny McEntee and Hope Hicks, declined to join him in Florida after spending years by his side on the campaign trail and in the West Wing.

Many other aides have left his side, eager to start anew far away from their former boss. White House aides and administration officials who once relished their West Wing perches have jetted off on remote getaways — cashing in on a mountain of unused vacation time. Others are frantically asking former colleagues for help finding work as they prioritize their own careers over whatever chapter Trump is planning for himself.

“There’s a lot of resumé passing and people just wanting to help people land on their feet,” said a former Trump White House official. It’s not been easy. Tainted by Trump’s reputation, several Trump aides described an increasingly bleak job market with virtually no chance of landing jobs in corporate America and some even having seen promising leads disappear after the rampage at the U.S. Capitol. A second former White House official said they knew of “people who got jobs rescinded because of Jan. 6.” A Republican strategist was blunter.

“They are really f—ed,” the strategist said, pointing to some top officials who stuck with Trump until the bitter end. “The Hill scramble, one of the few places where they’d be welcomed, already happened a month or so ago… They were told over and over to take their hand off the hot stove, and they didn’t want to listen.”

It’s not just the lower- and mid-level staffers getting pinched. Two people familiar with his thinking said Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows, who spent seven years in the House of Representatives before joining the White House, was even considering a position at the Trump Organization because of a lack of options.

It’s a far different reality from where Trump and his aides had envisioned they would be. A month ago, everything seemed crystal clear: He had lost the 2020 election but would soon launch a juggernaut campaign for the presidency in 2024, and his allies and inner circle would be there to help. Now, the former president’s team is scampering away — willing to leave Washington, in some cases for red states like Texas and Florida, to increase their job prospects — while his own second act is clouded by uncertainty. One former senior administration official noted that many inside the White House were waiting until after the Electoral College votes were counted to begin their job search in earnest, so as not to step on messaging about Trump’s efforts to challenge the election results. But then, the riots on Capitol Hill upended their plans.

“They looked to that [Jan. 6] as the end of the limbo state people were operating in so they could start moving on to the next thing” the former official said. “But the 6th put a shock to that.”

[From Politico]

Who would have thought that “organizing a deadly coup” and “subverting democracy” and “cheering for terrorists to murder elected officials and police officers” would look bad on a resume? Who would have thought that going full-throttle fascist with the dumbest guy on earth would have larger career repercussions? What’s particularly painful though is the thought that without the Jan. 6th insurrection, many of these douchebags probably would have been able to find jobs. The jobs wouldn’t have been great or anything, but it’s depressing to think that it literally took a domestic terrorist attack organized by the Trump White House to make these f–kers unhireable.

Oh, and now a liberal watchdog group is tracking former Trump aides in their quest to find work. Yes!! Make a spreadsheet and keep the pressure on!!

Maybe Hope Kicks can interview for Wife #4 when Melania divorces him.

    • Mac says:

I predict she will be on QVC selling a tacky jewelry line.

    • Blairski says:

This theory is always a head scratcher for me. Why would Hope Hicks marry an obese soon-to-be-thrice-divorced rage-addled narcissist who is 42 years her senior? I mean, they’re all insane, so maybe it makes sense in Crazy Town, but in the real world… ?

    • Chica says:

She was dating a silver fox guy from Goldman Sachs last year.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Hope Hicks must be horrible worker as I could not understand why she left Fox’s West Coast operations to go back to DC to work for Donny Brokeahontas Chump.

      • Korra says:

That job paid 10x more than her WH salary too. She probably was in over her head at Fox. As problematic as Fox is, they still operate like a corporate entity, whereas Hicks’ almost decade-long enmeshment with the Trump family has skewed her sense of what a normal job is. She thrived under their dysfunction, which makes her unhireable anywhere else.

  2. LightPurple says:

Well, there’s also the problem that few of them had any actual qualifications or job experience prior to working for Trump. They should have had feelers out in October and then begun serious job search work starting on November 4. These people didn’t even bother to start packing up their personal office belongings until just days before they were booted out. They were never living in reality.

  3. (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Complicity trumps employment (pun intended). I hope these MFs are never welcomed anywhere again. NO compassion for cultists who wanted to destroy our country. Let them apply to Putin’s government. Hell…most probably already have a dossier there.

  4. Coji says:

To quote Melania, I don’t really care, do you?

  5. Godwina says:

This this this all the way home.

  6. Izzy says:

    LMAOOOOOO tots and pears, b*tches!

  7. MM2 says:

I refer people in my work & just in the past few weeks the number of clients asking me if someone is a Trump supporter (they do not care if it’s gop, just specifically Trump), has skyrocketed. People don’t want to hire Trump supporters because they are legitimately scared of them now.

    • Chrissy (The Original) says:

Yeah, who would want a riot at their workplace?

    • BlueToile says:

I can understand that. I fired my stock broker in 2016 because he was a Trump supporter. I probably would have more money today if I had kept him, but I don’t care. I have to live with myself and I can sleep at night. I have jettisoned everyone from my life who supports Trump. Family, friends, co-worker, church members, it doesn’t matter. If they support Trump and his “values,” there is no place in my life for them.

  8. Nicole says:

It’s been less than a month. They’ll be just fine.

    • LillyfromLilooet says:

@Nicole, have to agree. I have been so stunned at how there are so many Republications still out there not entirely horrified by their party’s involvement…in a few months, likely a Trump name on the resume will not be the immediate poison pill it is now.

    • Korra says:

Once this story dies down, agreed. There are plenty of conservative think tanks and lobbyist groups that would be fine hiring ex-Trump staffers.

  9. Ann says:

I wonder if this means the grift is losing steam. Why can’t they all go to alt-right media? Hope Hicks could get a gig at OANN or Newsmax. Maybe the money isn’t there?

    • Lizzie says:

An expected lawsuit from Dominion could bring the alt-right media down.

    • Korra says:

Hicks’ problem is that she does not want to be on camera. She did hold down a lofty executive job at Fox for awhile, but decided to crawl back to Trump. The salary at Fox was close to $2million/year, but I doubt she would get close to that at OANN or Newsmax, even if she got a behind-the-scenes executive role. Since she enjoys staying behind-the-scenes, I expect she will settle for a PR /comms job at a lobbyist firm or join the RNC.

  10. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

“Gee, what a shame,” said no one ever.

  11. Eleonora says:

    And they’re surprised?

There are so many people (poc, women etc) that have way more talent than them.

And that’s without even considering that one just doesn’t want to hire facists.

  12. Amelie says:

I can’t feel sorry for any person who willingly took a job within the Trump administration. They made their beds, now they have to lie in them. They all knew Trump’s reputation–chaotic, furious tirades, unstable, unhinged, and complete dysfunction and rooted in unreality. Plenty of people who worked for him wrote books about it. They weren’t going in blind. And I believe even without the January 6th insurrection, a lot of people would have had a hard time finding jobs. Trump was challenging the election results and tweeting like a madman for weeks. I wouldn’t want to hire anyone working for someone like that because it would make me question everything about them as a person. Unless you’re a MAGA, no organization or person wants to be associated with the cult of Trump. These people are tainted and should have always had an exit strategy. Even if Trump had won a second term, White House jobs are never forever and it boggles my mind how short-sighted these people were.

  13. Valerie says:

Poor babies. Maybe they should just get over it? <3

  14. Mignionette says:

On a purely practical point isn’t this simply bc they;re now viewed as radicals connected to a president still subject to investigation ?

  15. Aphra says:

The slathering of makeup on Hope Hicks really speaks to a dangerous level of insecurity and vapidity. I mean, how long must it take her to pull herself together each day?? What a bloody waste of time and energy. I don’t know too many political/intellectual powerhouses who paint themselves like four-year-olds raiding their mom’s makeup drawer. All the Trump women are like this, and it speaks VOLUMES!

    • I think it’s TV/stage makeup, but does not translate at all in closeup photography or IRL. And yes, unattractive and predictable. I’m guessing they have a pro makeup person behind the scenes that does all of them.

    • ClaireB says:

Looking at the close-up picture of her, I was struck by her resemblance to Duchess Dolittle. They both look so hard! How do they manage to do that to their faces? Is it the eyeliner?? Too much bronzer?

    • Ange says:

I’m more looking at that horrendous foundation colour match in the first photo.

  16. MaryContrary says:

I don’t feel remotely bad for any of these people. I don’t want to hear “oh they were young and trying to get their start.” My young adult kids and teens know enough and have enough of a moral compass to not seek out employment with someone like this. I don’t want to hear their whining or their “cancel culture” bs. They made their bed. Consequences have actions.

  17. Siul says:

Can someone hand me a fake tissue? I need it to wipe away my fake tears.

  18. Oh-Dear says:

I heard they were having trouble and would have trouble finding jobs long before Jan 6th so this is no surprise. Those articles were out after the election loss.
Also, if ever there is a movie made and someone has to play Hope Hicks, they have to get Keri Russell (although there is such a lack of depth to this lady that Keri’s talent would be wasted unless they created a compelling story of what makes a person like Hope tick). I think Hope is the spitting image of Keri.

  19. Nina Simone says:

    Too bad so sad …..lmfaoooo

I have a classmate who actually chose to go work there in early 2017. At the office of digital media or so. She was like well “it’s the White House.” A couple of us had to tell her that it was tatamount to career suicide. She left not long after. because I sh*t you not – according to her “no one did anything.”

  20. HK9 says:

Glad to know people don’t want to hire their treasonous behinds.

  21. aquarius64 says:

This is what happens when you choose to work in a White House of ill repute.

  22. Agirlandherdog says:

    You reap what you sow.

    • Pommom says:

Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas. So Trump fluffers are having trouble getting another job. Good. Try the unemployment line.

No sympathy from me at all.

  23. Grace says:

Mark Meadows is AWFUL. I’m from NC and he was horrible when he was a rep. Now, his replacement, Madison Cawthorn, is just as bad. The grift, the lies, the unqualified egos involved with this crowd is intolerable!

  24. Annetommy says:

Hope Springs Eternal will have something to do as a few weeks ago Trump named her to be a member of the board overseeing the prestigious Fulbright scholarship. Obviously on the usual trumpian grounds that she has no relevant experience, knows fuc*k all about it, and can bring nothing to the table. Except her giant eyebrows.

  25. Stacy Dresden says:

The spreadsheet tracking is the most comical part about this. Very Katie Porter esque and I approve

    • Deering24 says:

They really need to track Stephen Miller and the rest of the cage-kids crew. Those people are still uber-bad news.

  26. Andrew’s Nemesis says:

The ethos of these people led directly to the deaths of George Floyd. Philando Castile. Breonna Taylor. Hundreds and thousands of people of colour have been murdered by sickening supremacist ideologies. The Trump-enablers don’t deserve anything good. They cleave to an evil creed. I’m glad they’ve been knocked from their high horses, but they are still deplorables.

  27. Sidewithkids says:

    Good. I hope this continues.

  28. chitowngal says:

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch of people.

  29. Deering24 says:

Eheheheh. Dubya’s admistration produced a whole lot of radioactive folks, but not nearly to this extent. And when you do worse than Dubya’s crew, well, that’s saying something.
