President Biden has bought Jill a gardenia corsage every V-Day for 43 years

Biden Sworn-in as 46th President of the United States

When I voted for Joe Biden last year, it didn’t even occur to me that I was voting for one half of the most romantic couple in the country. President Joe and Dr. Jill Biden are making me cry all the time with how much they adore each other and how incredibly sweet they are. Last Friday, ahead of Valentine’s Day, Dr. Jill had big “valentines” placed around the White House lawn, and she and Joe went out to look at them early in the morning. President Biden told reporters that Valentine’s Day is his wife’s favorite holiday, and she always does something special for him to mark the day, like paint “Joe Loves Jill” in his office windows. Now this story from People: Joe always buys gardenia corsages for Jill on V-Day and every special occasion. *sob*

The couple, who has been married for 43 years, often shares their love story, and has spoken of the importance of tradition in their relationship. The Bidens recently told PEOPLE in a sit-down interview that the president began gifting Mrs. Biden, 69, a corsage for Valentine’s Day decades ago — and that the tradition has continued even now.

“I don’t know when it started — a long, long time ago. I think it was for Valentine’s Day,” she says. “I love gardenias and so Joe would buy me a wrist corsage of gardenias. I wore it to school to teach!”

On Jan. 20, Dr. Biden could be seen wearing a wrist corsage for the small family dance party held in the White House Blue Room in lieu of the traditional inaugural balls (which were halted by the administration due to the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic).

“Every single special occasion,” the president explained to PEOPLE about the corsages. “It’s important to, and Jill does the same thing, let each other know that, no matter how much time goes by … she goes down the steps and—” Continuing, Biden put his hand over his heart, tapping: “It still goes a little boom, boom, boom, boom. For real.”

I’m really crying as I write this. We have a president who openly adores his wife and buys her gardenia wrist corsages for every special occasion. I CAN’T. THIS IS TOO SWEET. I am too jaded to be this emotional!!

Here’s President Biden’s V-Day social media post. JILLY!

And here’s Dr. Jill’s V-Day post – this is the cutest f–king thing with the scrunchie, pink coat and the giant bags full of candy and baked goods. She really goes all out for V-Day!!

I’m not even American, but this is so lovely and refreshing to see. The first family should be role models for the country and indeed even the world. This is what a healthy marriage looks like. This is what a healthy family looks like. This is the kind of love we should all aspire to. Enjoy it my American friends – you deserve this.

      Carnations aren’t cool for this.

But after the holidays I like red and white carnations w/evergreen boughs in a big vase, w/red berries or something rustic and natural. It lasts a long time in that lull time.

  2. Barcelona says:

I love how sweet and wonderful they are with each other!

  3. Tiffany says:

I am just so thankful that Joe was smart enough not to give Jill carnations.

Yes, my mind went there because I had a ex that did that.

    • Jaded says:

      I hate carnations!

    • Genessee says:

      Umm…

I love carnations. *runs and hides*

      • TIFFANY says:

They are the kind of flower that is funereal when giving at V day.

Two ex’s did this. I think they were trying to tell me something.

      • Juniper says:

I love them too. I love their scent. A former coworker told me that she worked in a flower shop and said they were “filler flowers” and I was crushed.

I’m glad I’m not the only one crying all the time about Joe and Jill. The contrast between them and those who will not be typed is so stark – I think I just forgot about goodness and love.
The hearts, the dogs, they kiss each other! – it’s all so normal and lovely.

    • AnnaKist says:

Ahh, that’s a great word – contrast. Could the Bidens be any more different from the former tenants of the White House? I also will never write or say that name again. I’m not American, but I’m so happy that America finally has a man and woman of integrity to lead the country; that the POTUS and VP have shown themselves to be decent, loving people, with a wealth of experience and leadership to guide America back to greatness. Of course Mr Biden would have a partner like Dr Jill. They are perfect to and for each other, and perfect figureheads for America.

I bet she had one of those hearts made with Joe + Jill and put it in their living quarters. Or at least that’s something I would have thought of if I were a romantic person.

It’s so nice to once again have a First Lady who actually likes having physical contact with her husband.

  7. TheOriginalMia says:

They are so cute. Just love them. I noticed the wrist corsage Inauguration night, but didn’t realize it was a tradition for them.

  8. newmenow says:

    Aww, sweet.

Yes, it is just so nice to have a POTUS and FLOTUS who have manners, and empathy, show kindness to each other.

Love their senior dog, Champ, and younger dog, Major.
No surprise to me that Trump did not have any pets.

  9. lucy2 says:

That’s really sweet! I do like how much they love each other and how open they are about it. I think they set a lovely example, and with all the hard work ahead, it’s good to know they have each other for support.
My parents have been married a little longer than the Bidens and do nothing but bicker. It’s exhausting to be around. It’s nice to see such a long marriage still so happy.

So sweet…. in germany, were i come from and were i life, valentines day is not a tradition. We adopted it from our anglo american friends. It Never ment anything to me, to be honest. But by accident I met my now husband on valentines day. A year later he asked me to marry him- on valentines day… so this day has become special for hubby and me, too. And we give us a special sweet every year that was served on the party where we met.
I was irritated at first about the gardenia corsage 😂. My First thought: underwear in gardenia colour, I had to google it…

    • Sojaschnitzel says:

Which part of germany do you live in? It’s a pretty big deal in my part (NRW).

      • Bgirl says:

You have Karneval (happy Rosenmontag!!!), isn‘t that enough😂. I live in Berlin, but I‘m born in Lower Saxony. But maybe it’s a question of age, the trend to celebrate Valentines day in Germany is not that old, like Halloween… When I was a kid both were known, but not celebrated.

  11. Like the Obamas and the Carter’s, I think the Biden’s have a beautiful and equal marriage and it shows. I’m not saying other First Families haven’t had loving relationships, but I think these 3 couples have truly equal strength in how they love and support each other. I would add Kamala Harris and her husband and Ruth Bader Ginsberg to that mix as well.

  12. Bella says:

She looks so darling in the pink coat! I love it!! Such a sweet tradition and the White House lawn is adorable. Great family and it gives me hope for the future.

  13. Rowan says:

They are just so sweet and it’s obvious they genuinely love each other to bits. I love our FLOTUS Dr. Jill. I hate the smell of gardenias I find them cloying but to each their own. My husband gives me bunches of gorgeous sterling roses on special occasions.
