Alex Beresford has gotten ‘relentless racism’ online since Piers Morgan’s tantrum

Alex Beresford attends The ITV Palooza! 2019 at The Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre; London SE1 8XX on Tuesday 12 November 2019.

On March 9th, Piers Morgan was on air at Good Morning Britain, throwing a massive, hateful tantrum about the Duchess of Sussex. He had watched the Oprah interview and he was consumed by irrational spite at a Black woman speaking about her experiences with racism at the hands of the British media and royal family. That morning, Piers’ nasty tantrum felt different, and a panelist named Alex Beresford patiently and calmly explained to Piers why Meghan had every right to tell her story and why she had every right to cut Piers off after they met in 2017. Piers stormed off the set because he’s so fragile and thin-skinned, and ever since then, a stories have appeared in the British press about how “popular” Piers was and how GMB won’t be the same and how he’s not racist at all. Meanwhile, Alex Beresford had faced relentless racist abuse online for… you know, being a mixed-race man and saying Meghan had every right to tell her story.

Alex Beresford has said he has faced “relentless racism” since speaking up for Meghan Markle on Good Morning Britain. The presenter clashed with Piers Morgan on the ITV show as they discussed Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, with Beresford accusing Morgan of “trashing” the duchess. The row ended with Morgan storming off and he later quit the show over his refusal to apologise for saying Markle had lied in the interview.

Beresford has now opened up about dealing with the fallout, telling The Telegraph: “Since then, I have been subjected to relentless racism myself on social media. I haven’t announced it but I have been forced to step away from Twitter and Facebook myself, because it was getting too much. I am a strong person, but I am not made of steel.”

Beresford, 40, said that the “harsh reality, though, is that social media is just a reflection of a bigger problem in society”. The TV star, born in Bristol to a white British mother and a Guyanese father, said growing up mixed race “was at times a lonely journey” and said that between himself and his friends, he had many examples of facing racism.

He also told how race once affected his mum’s job at a wine company, with a “change in treatment” and then a “change in job” following after he visited her at her office. Beresford has now told The Telegraph that the Winfrey interview “resonated” with him, “from a similar experience around the concern of a baby’s shade of colour to the devastation of laying to rest someone very close to my heart just three months ago, who had those same suicidal thoughts”.

“Whilst appearing to be a royal problem, it felt so personal to me,” said the TV star, adding that we need to have conversations about race.

I’m not linking to the original Telegraph story for a reason, because they continue to publish Camilla Tominey’s racist fan-fiction reporting. But you get the gist of their exclusive with Beresford. This is like a racist snake eating its own racist tail – a half-Guyanese man defended a half-Black woman’s right to speak about the racism she experiences, and the man faces relentless racist abuse in the wake of it. And all of the racist abuse is happening because Piers Morgan and the rest of the British media can’t admit their own racial/racist bias and prejudices. “How dare you call out my white fragility, you [racist abuse]!” Anyway, I feel sorry for Alex and I hope he has a full and successful career with coworkers who are not racist. I doubt that will happen and it’s incredibly painful to watch.

(If you have to talk sh-t about him, maybe point out that those jeggings are terrible?! He’s super-handsome though.)

maybe point out that those jeggings are terrible yes, but they are superbly tight.

  2. Izzy says:

He should highlight one of those abusive racist posts every day ON AIR, without redacting the person’s name or handle. If they’re willing to dish it, they should be prepared to get called out publicly on a national news show for it.

    • MF1 says:

Yes, absolutely love this idea. Don’t let these mfs hide under a rock.

    • equality says:

      Excellent idea.

      • ItReallyIsYouNotMe says:

Maybe leave this comment on GMA’s official Insta account so they see it?

    • Kari says:

Honestly though I get why someone like him wouldn’t do this. I have friends and acquaintances that have pretty big social media followings for their advocacy work and they’ve shared that the reason they don’t come forward publicly with names (aside from potential lawsuits) is that they fear for their family’s safety and their own. Unfortunately, you can’t distinguish who is a troll and who really would go through with their threats. My heart goes out to anyone, especially BIPOC, dealing with this because it is terrifying.

      • SheaButterBaby says:

Kari, I agree. It’s not our job as BIPOC to expose racists, making ourselves vulnerable to further harm. If a person chooses to do so then that’s fine. But most of us are just tired and not surprised at any of these things.

    • SheaButterBaby says:

A person dealing with racial trauma isn’t likely to daily repost disgusting messages so that they have to relive this trauma over and over again. And what good would it do to when the majority of the public seems to agree with and see nothing wrong with such awful racism? It would just invite even more hate. And at this point, we are simply exhausted. It’s so tiring.

  3. Mia says:

now THAT is a sexy bald man

    • Ann says:

Amen! I was thinking the same thing. I am sure he has been subjected to a lot of racist hate since the incident, but I have seen a lot of support for him on SM too. When he took the top spot on the show one day, people saying they would take him over Piers any day of the week, and they were so glad he called Morgan out. I hope the hate ebbs because he does not deserve that, he deserves the opposite for speaking up to that deranged bully. He seems like a very good person.

    • BayTampaBay says:

      Noe Schitt Sherlock!

    • MF1 says:

YES. That patterned suit and black turtleneck? PWT could never!

      • Cecilia says:

I still die of laughter everytime I remember how the whole world collectively came together to tell william that he wasn’t sexy.😂

    • Seraphina says:

AMEN! That’s all I cam here to say. A tall cool glass of water on a hot and humid day.

    • February-Pisces says:

      Yes he’s fine AF. 😍

  4. BayTampaBay says:

When a man is that good looking jeggings really don’t matter as I did not notice what he was wearing.

ETA: I sorta like the jacket. Let’s see a tank top with those jeggings.

  5. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

    He’s hawt.

    • Mika says:

In the first picture I was like “OOOOHHH” but then I saw the jeggings photo and was like “….oh”

  6. Amelie says:

Aw man, I’m sorry to hear he’s facing racist trolls online for defending Meghan but it only makes the anti-Meghan trolls even worse because it is clear their hate is stemmed in racism. One of the things that the media didn’t even highlight in the wake of Piers Morgans’s unhinged rant on Good Morning Britain is that Piers was being challenged by a biracial man and he couldn’t handle it. I believe I was the first person to even mention it in the comments of the first Celebitchy post that covered that story. I remember going through the comments and thinking “How has no one mentioned he’s biracial?? He clearly identified with Meghan in that Oprah interview!” That entire panel of hosts was white EXCEPT for Alex Beresford. He must have felt so lonely in that room when he defended Meghan. I know he didn’t bring up his own race when he told Piers to shut up but it was very telling when he was the only one to speak up.

    • Lyds says:

It takes absolute guts to go on GMB and criticize their most widely recognized “personality” on air. In light of what happened to Alex, as well as the unpleasant but truthful words of the Muslim/Jewish charity on the “negative” attention that association with Meghan invites, I think it’s hard for us in America to fully comprehend the backlash from British trolls.

I can’t think of many UK celebrities who have come out in support of H&M — pls bring it to my attention if you know any! In my recollection, the only time a high-profile person defended her was Elton John regardint the use of his private jet. The fear of the media/public backlash seems very real there.

      • Keri says:

I think John Oliver acknowledged that he believes she faced racism and wasn’t surprised. He’s the only famous Brit that I know of, that has not skirted the race issue and the racism she faced. He actually predicted it before Harry and Meghan left.

      • Lyds says:

@Keri: Totally, John Olivier and James Cordon are in their corner, but they’ve both also carved out careers stateside. It says a lot that those living in the British Isle are too scared to publicly oppose their Queen. Like many mentioned, that is some cult-like influence to say the least.

  7. Nanny to the Rescue says:

No man should wear jeggings, ever.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Well at least not in public. LOL! LOL!

    • MsIam says:

Yeah its not my jam at all! I put those in the same category as “Man skirts” or whatever they are called. But from the waist up he’s looking yummy!

    • Joni says:

Any man who wants to wear jeggings or a skirt should wear them whenever they please.
It’s fine if it’s not your thing, but dictating what someone should wear is not OK.

      • Carrie says:

Totally agree with you Joni. I wouldn’t like a man telling a woman what to wear so by the same token etc.

  8. Cecilia says:

Between meghan markle and brexit. Not so great britain is really showing their ass. And all this comes out after a government report found the Uk not guilty of racism. Sorry to any UK folks on here but currently the UK deserves the decline its enduring.

    • AlpineWitch says:

That report about institutional racism done by the government was so ridiculous that it could have been a joke, of course they were going to say none of them was racist. UK government is pathetic (I unfortunately live in England)

  9. Lemons says:

What’s infuriating is that we’re supposed to now ignore the racist abuse that Alex is a victim to and that Meghan is a victim to, that minorities have been victim to when they speak up. Then we’re playing the race card according to Camilla T and Lady C.

    And all is normal.

  10. MissMarierose says:

I don’t mind the tight jeggings, but they definitely don’t go with that turtleneck.
Anyway … it’s horrible (but not surprising) that he’s being treated this way just for sticking up for Meghan. And he’s absolutely right that UK needs to have a serious conversation about race.

  11. Rote Zora says:

He conducted himself well during that segment. He was professional, calm, articulate, and just adult. While the rascist manchild behaved like the spoiled brat he is; unable to even fake a professional veneer. I agree with Izzy, Mr.Beresford should make those posts public. Not just to shame those twats, but to highlight the abuse , and level of uglyness, to those with their heads stuck in “Disney-bubbles”. Where such vitriol and hate is something that only happens in sad movies or is associated with “backward” places from the US bible belt states, but not in “hip”, educated, liberal, “woke” spaces in London or Berlin. And yes, Mr. Beresford looks dapper. His sight is def. a gazillion times more pleasing to the eye than the rascist man-child. Happy holidays to all!

  12. MsIam says:

Next up will be the articles about how he’s “too sensitive” and “he’s the racist for talking about race!”. People just get on my nerves, that’s why I prefer cats, lol.

  13. Jenn says:

Well I guess his little stunt with that interview, defending the royal family didn’t work. They showed him that he is not one of them and nothing will change that.
Maybe he will stand firm in his convictions and not waffle.

  14. Rote Zora says:

Please write about baseball player Ian Desmond

  15. Duchess of hazard says:

The British government has declared racism in Britain dead and that slavery was a good thing, soooo… there is Form.

    • Edna says:

Are you serious? What kind of nonsense is that.

      • duchess of hazard says:

It’s explained quite well here: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/3/31/uk-race-report-says-system-not-rigged-against-minorities

And they got a British Pakistani to sign off on it. Lawd.

      • Keri says:

Apparently, some of the people they referenced to “prove” that there is no racism in the UK spoke up and called them out, stating that they were not asked or were part of the conversation, even though the report listed their names. The British government is getting exposed for their corrupt practices.

If the government that supports Baldimort is like this, it’s no wonder that Willie didn’t think twice about signing Harry’s name to the document that denied his own bullying of the Sussexes.

      • CrazyHeCallsMe says:

Wow. Talk about gaslighting. That is some next level bullshit.

    • SenseOfTheAbsurd says:

Interestingly, at least two so far of the academics and experts cited in the report have come forward to say that they weren’t consulted and have been misrepresented. The ‘Britain is not systemically racist’ report is a fraud.

    • AlpineWitch says:

That part about resurrecting slavery as a good civilising method was a scandal!

  16. February-Pisces says:

Alex spoke to piers in a calm, articulate manner. Of course that makes him even worse than the entitled white man who does nothing but scream abuse at a woman on a daily basis.

I definitely think something is going on with piers and with regards to his treatment toward Meghan. We always just call him ‘obsessed’ and ‘deranged’ but piers doesn’t mind that at all. Why? I definitely think it has something to do with phone hacking. I think he’s really in the sh*t, but has struck some sort of deal with the firm where they will have his back as long as he does as he’s told. I think if he did a really REALLY good job trashing Meghan, then there could even have been a honour in it for him too. Piers never cared how deranged he looked because he had bigger fish to fry.

    • lee says:

Been reading the comments about this man on the Daily Mail. They are disgusting. So just like Meghan, the moment this mixed race man challenged the estabished order in even the most respectful way he has to be put back in his place. The thing that really opened my eyes to the racism Meghan Markle had to endure was the comments from the food bank Meghan donated money to. They had the money but were afraid to make the donation public because Meghan’s reputation in the UK had become so toxic. Only after Meghan’s interview with Oprah did they decide to announce the donation out of solidarity with Meghan and to fight racism. I can’t blame Meghan for getting the hell out of that place. She never had a fair shot.

  17. Emily_C says:

I never thought I’d be stanning a British weather reporter, but here we are. I hope he gets a lot of support from online strangers too — it does actually help when one’s undergoing something like this. More importantly, I hope his bosses have his back. I’m sure he’s got a lot of friends supporting him (and possibly groupies.)

  18. manda says:

I have britbox, and will check out GMB! I never would have before…

  19. Likeyoucare says:

GMB should allow alex to praise meghan everuday on the show. The racist will watch the show evenmore because they like to hate watch

  20. Sam says:

I’ve seen some of it and it’s nasty.

All because he was calm, measured and eloquent when calling out a rabid and deranged colleague.
