Grimes got a huge ‘alien scars’ tattoo on her back: kind of cool or very unsettling?

Last year, the gossip world paid attention to Elon Musk and Grimes, as they welcomed a baby boy they named X Æ A-12 Musk. It was… a lot. Elon continues to be the worst, so most people with a casual gossip interest in him just moved on. Grimes had the opportunity to rebrand herself or, you know, just stop being so try-hard. But she’s still trying to be that fake-nerd Cool Girl that he apparently wants. And so this happened… Grimes got “alien scar” tattoos on her back. She posted the photo of her new tattoos on her Instagram, and the “co-designer” of the tattoo tweeted this:

The first thing this reminded me of – and I know, it’s BAD – is that scene in Glory, where Denzel Washington’s character takes off his shirt and you can see the old scarring from where he was whipped. Elon Musk is a white South African, I’m just saying. Also, the tattoo is ugly. Her body, her choice, etc. But damn, that’s just an ugly tattoo.

And of course she has blonde hair now. Elon likes his women to go white-blonde.

Oh, well: she’s going to have to live with her monstrosity.

  2. atorontogal says:

Yikes…WTAF is this??? I am deeply worried for their child.

  3. nievie says:

it honestly looks like she’s been self-harming and needs a trigger warning or something.

  4. lucy2 says:

Kaiser I had the same first impression.

  5. Amelie says:

It’s her body, her choice, but we’re allowed to have an opinion. And mine is it’s ugly and disturbing to look at. It reminds me of someone who decided to cut and self-harm themselves and there’s nothing edgy or cool about that. I can’t imagine that will look nice when she’s old and shriveled. It reminds me of the whip marks that Jamie Fraser’s character on Outlander has every time he takes off his shirt on his back. Or the words carved into Amy Adams’s character’s skin in Sharp Objects.

  6. antanina says:

she seems quite messed in a head. and if she takes as many drugs as her boyfriend, that child will grow up being messed up too.

  7. Honeybear says:

Sad to see she gets her lips done, her natural face is very pretty, hate to think what he says to her considering the way he would speak to his first wife. Can’t be great for the self esteem being with such a narcissistic man.

    • mysticgal says:

I agree. can’t help but be disappointed, i used to see her as so punk rock. 🙁

    • Emm says:

Yeah I don’t get it but I don’t think I’m meant to. I also don’t understand her lips, the top one always looks chapped on the top like my five year old’s because she’s always sucking on it.

I will say though our family loves the show Hilda on Netflix and she did the theme song which is great and the only song I’ve ever heard of hers lol. If you have kids, or not because honestly I will watch it by myself, and like fantasy, Stranger Things type of shows I highly recommend. The music is superb and the characters and stories are great and there is some really funny stuff in each episode. It’s like the type of kids shows they know adults will watch so they put stuff in their for them.

    Crikey.

  9. Lemons says:

Grimes has always been like this, so I’m not surprised by her pushing the limits…It will end up looking like scars, but hopefully she is happy with it and is not actually harming herself in the process. I personally would be weirded out. But it’s her body, not mine.

    • Golly Gee says:

Yes, I think she’s always been a nerd. She hasn’t become one to please Elon. That being said, I can see him influencing her and pushing her to be edgier still. Is this tattoo a turn on for him when they’re having sex? Whose idea was it to get the tattoo? She will come to regret having it done, I’m sure.

      • Kate says:

She has so many tattoos already, why would she regret this one? It’s her least visible tattoo already and once the redness fades it’s going to be her subtlest by far. She already has dozens of hand tattoos and massive blackwork leg and arm tattoos, which she got way before she even met Elon. She even did some of her tattoos herself, that’s how into tattooing she is. If anything you could say she seems to be getting less body mods done since she’s been with him.

It’s depressing how everything she does is now attributed to Elon’s influence, no matter how much she was known for these things before him.

Are you Made for Love, Grimes?

    • Mia says:

Elon allegedly told her it was a good idea to change her own name to some scientific symbol as well, but she hasn’t made the legal change yet (probably because it isn’t allowed). And apparently, he didn’t think anyone could possibly make or understand jokes about AI like he does. But when he saw her tweet about some AI, he just had to connect with her. All this to say…I agree someone should sit her down and make her watch that show.

I like Grimes music and knowing what she went through in the past as a victim of sexual assault and abuse I have a soft spot for her.

      • Kate says:

She’d gone by the name c in her private life for years and years before she met Elon. It’s what all her friends and family call her. She’s wanted to change her name forever (practically all her early interviews touch on that) but she never thought c was a good enough name to legally change it to since it’s just a letter. All Elon did was point out it could mean something cool like the speed of light and not just be a letter. So he made her feel good and confident about the name she was already using, that’s all.

The reason she hasn’t changed it yet is because she’s been in the process of getting a green card the last couple of years and a legal name change during that throws a spanner in the works.

    • Belig says:

      Ha! He would.
I am OBSESSED with that show.

    • bettyrose says:

I feel like if you didn’t know anything about Elon’s first marriage or had never read that Marie Claire article, you could watch the show and be like “haha what a fun dystopian dark comedy.” As it is, I’m obsessed with the show too but it gives me chills.

  11. Watson says:

Grimes has always been like this so i don’t understand the shock? I mean the tattoos are ugly but not surprising.

  12. Christa says:

The tattoo is stupid. Lucky for her is that light color will fade significantly in a couple years and perhaps disappear entirely eventually.

Yes she is a try hard and would be a nobody if it were not for having a baby with Elon Musk. That she finds him tolerable enough to sleep with says a lot. Lol

Yes and that poor child. She is still try hard even after having a child, an event which one would think would give her some perspective on what is really important in life.

    • KL says:

I think this whole thing is a slow-motion train wreck, but Grimes was (is!) an incredibly popular music producer/performer years before she even met Musk. She’s niche, but she’s not even close to a “nobody.”

    • ao says:

Grimes was wayyyy more famous before we even started hearing about Elon Musk. Great musician and great performer. Her music is pretty cool.

  13. ennie says:

I don’t know her. This looks like scarification.

  14. KatianaD says:

Not as disturbing as her baby daddy and the way he treats women and human rights

    • Twin falls says:

So my 13 year old likes Tesla and said Musk sold off everything but one small house and reinvested it in Tesla. My first thought was he has a new baby and is hiding assets for when they break up.

  15. Ari says:

Omg I read the name but still only “saw” Brittany Spears and almost freaked

  16. Faith27 says:

Is she cosplaying a Handmaid in that white pillowy thing on her head? 😱

  17. Killfanora says:

Apart from the ugly looking “scars” all I can see is her knicker label hanging out. Am I the only one who cuts them out cos they’re a damn nuisance?

  18. Christina says:

This is a Grimes “thing”, the sort of shock, being “different” and original and seeing links and conspiracies. What I wish she would study and internalize is that the tattoo mimics images of men and women whipped during slavery.

This reminds me of how self indulgent and dumb Angelina Jolie was before she started to travel the world and see real pain from war and poverty. Rich white artists like Grimes are imagining Alien pain, but it looks a lot like what we already do to each other, what White people have already done to Black and brown people through the last few centuries, but Grimes and Musk think that the things they think about are special and new and ironic and say smart things about humanity. Sometimes it’s just pain porn.

All that said, I actually like the filigree and do think that it is beautiful, but the concept isn’t beautiful, because it’s fantasy about being an alien’s experiment and all “sciency”. The concept is sad and ignorant. Science fiction is usually critical of this stuff. She doesn’t seem to see it. Very Karen.

  19. Jamie says:

…she doesn’t actually think she’s an alien, right? She seems to bring this up a lot. It makes me think of method acting, but for music. (Method musician?)

  20. Marigold says:

It must take so much energy to be that weird. I like weird, but she is just such a pick me.

  21. VN says:

So she spends her days concentrating on how she looks. How avant- garde.

  22. Aimee says:

    This woman creeps me out.

  23. K says:

This looks like a particularly fierce case of galactic ringworm.

  24. emu says:

fake nerd? I mean she’s a weirdo and all that but she really is this person. She was this before Elon and she will be after. I followed her before Elon. They got together bonding over some random nerdo reference.
And I’m not about that tattoo – as other commenters has mentioned – whipping scars or ringworm haha

  25. y says:

Someone asked if she really believes herself an alien. I think she is trauma mind programmed, and part of that is some association with not being human ( identification with an animal, object or some abstract idea like aliens). So, at some level of her mind, she may believe it. I see how E Musk was attracted, people with occult programming can sense one another. These two seem to share the same language and ideas. Also the tattoo looks like a huge butterfly, and that is precisely the occult symbol for mind programming. In the form of scars, well….I rest my case.

    • mysticgal says:

This is really interesting; I’ll have to look it up. I recently took ayahuasca and saw aliens and was told I’m not human. Now every time I trip, that’s the message I get. Apparently its a concept called “starseeds.” And it’s real but many people won’t understand so you’ll just sound crazy if you discuss it. I wonder if she’s a starseed.

      • y says:

It’s just a collective program, don’t buy into it. The drug gets you deeper than your mind can usually go, but what you get it’s the bullshit that is hidden there, though the mind codes it as truth. People have always looked to the stars for help or guidance, so it’s a huge and very old program. It’s weird but as we grow up we tend to copy the mind from other people that have theirs copied as well and so on, so no wonder we get a lot of weird ideas.

  26. magda mosi says:

well, seems I will be the sole person here, I love it, the tattoo, the gan generation of it, think it’s very cool

  27. MerlinsMom1018 says:

    Welllllll…
In the minority here but I like it! It’s not something I would get but this strikes me as her whole persona so….
But I bet it hurts like a bit*ch

  28. Kat says:

nightmarish. her behavior seems to be dancing perilously close to disordered. I am unsure how her child with car guy will cope with not one but two notably eccentric parents. It won’t be easy and I don’t envy him (or any of his half siblings or any of car guy’s ex wives/GFs)

  29. Sammiches says:

Reducing her to a “fake nerd” and saying she went blonde for a man(when she has been blonde plenty of times previously) is a really disappointing, although not surprising (from this author, at least) take. You can not like a woman without trying to make her entire being about impressing a man.

    • MarcelMarcel says:

Grimes getting an alien tattoo is very on brand for her. (Regardless of whether or not everyone finds it aesthetically pleasing). Like I’m pretty sure she’s been referencing aliens since day one. And also her genre of music is for nerds- avant garde and slightly off kilter techno pop music with sci-fi aesthetics.
And yeah she’s dyed her hair blonde multiple times.
I think we can acknowledge Elon Musk is clearly a terrible human and terrible to date without calling Grimes a ‘fake nerd’.

  30. Kate says:

Fake-nerd? Really? This is a woman who’s first album (a decade ago) was entirely Dune themed. A woman who studied neuroscience and Russian literature and was so obsessed with space that a 2010 documentary about her music turned into a documentary largely about space because it’s all she could talk about.

It’s incredibly sexist the way people reduce this 32yr old woman down to nothing but the 3 years she’s spent with Elon Musk. As though she never had a career or interests or dyed her hair (she used to bleach her hair so often she did bleaching tutorials) or got massive tattoo’s (this is nothing compared to her leg tat) before she met him.

  31. Kate says:

I don’t get the comments about it looking like scarring/self harm. It’s a fresh tattoo. Of course it’s all red and raised. All white ink tattoo’s look like this while they heal, and a lot of black and coloured ink tattoos like like brandings or burns while they heal. My last tattoo had a lot of red ink and looked like I’d carved myself up the week I got it. Large or intricate work looks brutal while it’s fresh, but that has nothing to do with how it eventually looks once healed or the intent behind it.

  32. Trillion says:

I think it’s graceful and elegant. Not many people could pull that off, and I think she does.
