Prince Philip spent 18 years designing a custom Land Rover… and it’s a pickup truck

Princess of Eugenie of York and Mr Jack Brooksbank Wedding

One of the stories I’ve been ignoring in this week full of news and drama about Prince Philip’s passing is how the man designed a custom Land Rover to carry his coffin for his funeral procession. People really could not shut up about that. It’s common in the Windsor klan for ageing royals to plan out their funeral arrangements down to the smallest detail, and Philip had apparently been tweaking the plans for this custom Land Rover for more than 18 years. Nearly two decades of careful planning and…. Philip designed a pickup truck:

Philip married his cousin and really wanted his final journey to be in the back of a pickup truck. And this family gets held up as the elite of the elite. Chris Ship at ITV had more details about the truck: it was built using a Land Rover Defender TDS 130 Chassis and the original color was Belize Green, but Philip asked that it be repainted to Dark Bronze Green, the color of most Land Rovers in military use.

I don’t hate it. At least it’s practical, rather than a bejewelled monstrosity.

  2. Ashley says:

“Philip married his cousin and really wanted his final journey to be in the back of a pickup truck.” DYING. Line of the day.

“Philip married his cousin and really wanted his final journey to be in the back of a pickup truck.”
    I am screaming. OMG.

  4. Jess says:

This makes me sideeye all the brits that tease/mock americans for using pickup trucks and insinuate we’re somewhat lower class bc of it only for the upper class to use one is ironic as hell

  5. Mamasan says:

I’m sorry. This is the Royal Family. One would think this was Uncle Willis’ funeral from Arkansas.😂 I’m going to hell, I can’t help it.

  6. FC says:

I love a good pickup truck, but it’s hilarious that they keep touting his rich person hobby as him having “a knack for design.” If anything it makes him look like a bored aristo who forces his staff/subjects to change the color of things for no reason.

    • Couch potato says:

Msybe that’s where Keen got it from.

    • equality says:

Would somebody with a “knack” for something take 18 years to do it?

      • Lemons says:

I mean…it was to be his final resting place as the consort to the Queen. I may not take that long, but why not?

      • Carrie says:

and there we were having a go at Keen taking 8 years to come up with 5 questions.
Phil to Keen : don’t be in such a rush. You got another 10 years to get this.
        This amazingly mediocre bunch.

  7. lucky says:

    Well, personally, I love it.

    • iconoclast59 says:

Me, too. I think it’s kind of a boss move on Philip’s part, if indeed he requested it.

  8. BW says:

I swear the guys that just cut down the tree in my front yard had this exact truck for grinding up and hauling away the debris.

  9. Margot says:

Reddit had a good thread yesterday about things that are considered classy if you’re rich and trashy if you’re not. This fits right in!

  10. Amy Bee says:

I mean the ordinary man can’t call up Land Rover to design a hearst for his funeral. Only the elite of the elite can do that. I think this entire story is tone-deaf given the current circumstances.

  11. Becks1 says:

That’s not quite what I was expecting lol.

  12. Cecilia says:

Can’t say i love it but at least they are adding a personal touch

  13. Noki says:

‘Phillip married his cousin’…what does this mean ?

    • Becks1 says:

It means just that. Philip and Elizabeth were….second cousins? second cousins once removed? Something like that.

      • BayTampaBay says:

Phillip & QEII are cousins both through Queen Victoria and through Christian IX of Denmark.

They are third cousins through Queen Victoria and second cousins once removed through King Christian IX of Denmark.

      • Marjorie K. Margel says:

        Well that explains Charles then….

    • Plums says:

They’re both great great grandchildren of Queen Victoria, I think.

    • Emily_C says:

Absolutely nothing, because they were third cousins.

  14. Desdemona says:

    It’s… strange… But ok… Why not?

  15. OptimalDork says:

Any guesses as to why he’d do this? I wonder if it’s a big “f you” to protocol? Feels like it. Or an inside joke? Or maybe he really is the type of guy who marries his cousin and wanted a truck for a hearse.

And I’d love to have been a fly on the wall when he was planning this funeral. The men in grey must have blown their collective gaskets!

    • Amy Bee says:

I’m guessing he’s just self indulgent. Plus the Royal Family have had a long standing relationship with Land Rover.

  16. Kyla says:

I really like the look of it. I think it is quite elegant and thoughtfully designed.

    • Betsy says:

Yeah, it looks like a WWII vehicle to me. Having watched way too many WWII era dramas and mysteries, I like the look.

    • North of Boston says:

I laughed at the change in color: “no no no, not THAT green, THIS green”
He insisted on making his hearse do military cosplay just like the royals do sometimes.

  17. Plums says:

Honestly, I live in Texas and I’m shocked that “pickup truck hearse” is not already a thing. This is genius, lol. All kidding aside, I actually legit kind of like it? The green makes it work, I think. If it was black like a traditional hearse, it’d seem sillier to me.

  18. NewKay_ says:

Imagine having the leisure time to do something like that. Height of privilege.

  19. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Looks like something the colonizers would bomb around in, in the African Commonwealth countries c. 1950s. Which is actually unsurprising.

  20. Cava24 says:

aaaaand hopefully this is the end of the Royal Family creating single-use vehicles. Whatever hearse Betty gets in a few years better be good enough for everyone following. I wonder how many proto- types of this one were made and never used since Phil started his project?

    • SarahCS says:

Yes! What on earth do you use this for after Saturday?

    • Carmen-JamRock says:

This is wht i was thinking……will the vehicle be put in a museum somewhere afterwards? Or will it be converted for use going forward?

I simply cant stand wastage in the face of so much suffering in the world….nevermind tht this funeral might be funded (partially) from their prvt wealth.

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

My thought was “why didn’t they just pop him into a Subaru Forester? Job done!”

  21. Lizzie Bathory says:

Like others, I actually kind of like the color & vintage vibe, but I also find this hilarious. I’m glad Philip thought to add a “lid” on the truck bed. I’m reminded of a time when I was moving houses in SC & had to ride sitting in my friend’s truck bed so the futon mattress didn’t blow out.
