Michaela Coel became a household name when she played the extremely awkward Tracey in the British sitcom Chewing Gum. Michaela’s HBO show, I May Destroy You, brought her fame in the U.S. as well. The show received a lot of awards buzz despite being snubbed by the Golden Globes. Michaela is profiled in Variety as one of six covers for their “Power of Women in Comedy” issue. Michaela, whose parents are Ghanaian, is dressed in ethnic Ghanaian clothing and jewelry, making a powerful statement. Michaela told Variety that she got into several podcasts, tv shows, and movies during the lockdown. Michaela said podcasts and movies were cathartic for her and helped her get through the pandemic. Below are a few highlights from her profile in Variety:

A good chunk of the content she consumed over the last year — from Misha Green’s “Lovecraft Country” to “Los Espookys,” from Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega and Fred Armisen — happens to be on the same network that broadcasts “I May Destroy You.” Of working with HBO, Coel says, “They just make great shows, so it’s incredible that I am on that network.”

“I love ‘Succession.’ I think it’s hilarious and absurd and grotesque and that is the kind of humor that I love the most,” Coel says, praising creator Jesse Armstrong, before gushing over Bill Hader’s comedy “Barry.” “I find [that show] stunning, mind-blowing, genius, just brilliant.”

Coel is also a big fan of Issa Rae and her hit series “Insecure,” noting the distinct and inclusive view of Los Angeles that Rae spotlights on the show. “I’m obviously not from LA, but it’s wonderful to find the threads and find surprising moments of mirroring or reflection,” she explains, sharing that she aimed to give audiences the same opportunity to see themselves reflected by the way she portrays London in “I May Destroy You.”

Coel spent most of her time in quarantine listening to podcasts. Listing off a few of her favorites, she says, “I definitely recommend ‘Rabbit Hole’ [from ‘The New York Times’]. ‘Nice White Parents’ is a fantastic podcast. Esther Perel’s ‘How’s Work?’ — she’s a French therapist and she does one-off sessions, either with married couples or colleagues. Lots of ‘Hidden Brain’ [hosted by] Shankar Vedantam; the Rich Roll podcast. Mark Hyman’s ‘The Doctor’s Farmacy’ — it’s all about health and nutrition and how to try and live well.”

I fell in love with Michaela when I saw her in Chewing Gum several years ago. That show helped me get through a tough time in my life. Let’s just say I laughed hard every week. I am so happy to see Michaela’s career grow. I May Destroy You was an amazing show that should have been up for a Golden Globe. I was very irritated to see that it was snubbed while shows like Emily in Paris got nods. (Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Emily in Paris but it was not award-worthy material.)

Michaela looked absolutely stunning on the cover of Variety and her outfit gave me ideas for upcoming photoshoots. Michaela is striking and she looked like a bonafide goddess. I would love to see Michaela and Issa Rae do a show together. That would be the most hilariously awkward program ever. I liked several of Michaela’s podcast recommendations because I love listening to Esther Perel. The woman is fascinating. I want to start watching Succession because my favorite Swede Alexander Skarsgard is going to be in season two. And now that I know Michaela liked it, I will definitely be watching. I look forward to seeing what Michaela gets up to. But I may start a social media campaign for a Michaela Coel and Issa Rae show.

She is gorgeous! I’m always looking for new podcasts to listen to, so I’ll be checking out these.

Gosh, so stunning! I’ll have to check out her other pod recommendations because I also liked Rabbit Hole and Shankar’s voice from Hidden Brain is soooooo pleasant and lovely. I hardly watch anything but she seems so charming that I would definitely give her shows a shot!

  5. Lucy2 says:

She is incredibly talented, I may destroy you is one of the year best shows I’ve ever seen, though it definitely deals with some very difficult things. And she is so beautiful, I can’t take my eyes off her face when she’s on screen!
I love Esther’s podcasts, they are really interesting and it’s fascinating to see her dig into the root of the problem.
Succession was excellent, and I too am very excited about Alex joining the cast!

She is so regal. Really gorgeous

  7. Chris says:

Chewing Gum is hilarious and she is sooooo good in it. I don’t think a lot of people could pull off her character but she does it so brilliantly.

  8. BusyLizzy says:

Wow she is stunning! I May Destroy You was hard to watch at times but one of the best shows of 2020.

  9. Kaye says:

Both of her shows are so great. She is genius & gorgeous! Hopeful she gets more notice & deserved acclaim.

  10. MIBound says:

This is a breathtaking photo, beautiful is not a strong enough word.

  11. Soapboxpudding says:

She is SO talented! And stunning.

  12. Veronica S. says:

Wow, she’s got some really striking features. Betting she would’ve been trapped for modeling if she was taller.

This is the second time a very funny woman has recommended “Succession,” so I guess I’m watching lol.

  13. Dizzy says:

Love her, she’s gorgeous and intelligent. Loved “I May Destroy You”, especially the last episode draws everything in to a wonderful conclusion ,addressing loneliness, the importance of human connection and friends.

  14. Nanea says:

I love the photo Variety shared on Insta, Michaela in that green dress.

And I really hope that snubbing “I may destroy you” is the beginning of the end for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as we know it.

My personal opinion is that the whole HFPA as a secretive society with a few handful of members, and the way they misconducted themselves at press junkets, and e.g. the accepting of bribes is irredeemable.

She’s amazing. Chewing Gum was hilarious, and I May Destroy You is an absolutely brilliant, complex piece of art. I can’t wait to see what she does next. It’s no surprise she has great taste in shows; Succession and Barry are both so good, and my personal favorite that she mentioned here is Los Espookys, which is just so silly in such a lovely way (I May Destroy You blows them all out of the water, though).

  16. Jais says:

Am also excited to see what she does next and now have to look up los espookys?

  17. AM says:

I came here just to say that Michaela Cole did not just star in Chewing Gum and IMDY. She created, wrote and produced Chewing Gum. She created, wrote, produced AND directed I May Destroy You. I don’t see any of that mentioned in this article.

Not that we have to compare women to each other, but…Pheobe Waller-Bridge gets a lot of press about her writing and producing when Michaela has actually done more as an auteur, in my opinion. I love them both and their art just want Michaela to get all the credit she deserves.

  18. Dierski says:

Such a stunning cover, wow. Just gorgeous!!

Somehow I only discovered MC through the “USS Callister” episode of “Black Mirror” 3-4 years ago. It was one of those moments when you discover an actor in a supporting/minor role and think, “Who IS that? That is a STAR.” And you find yourself watching it again and just watching them and not whoever else is onscreen.
