Stephen Moyer on fiance Anna Paquin: first I fell in love with her talent

Stephen Moyer, 39, had a very frank and kind of gushing chat with E!’s Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet at the Emmys. He was inevitably asked a ton of questions about his relationship with on and off-screen love interest Anna Paquin, 27, and to his credit he was open about how much he cares for her and he even gave some personal details about how he proposed to Anna earlier this year. Moyer previously told Access Hollywood that he designed Paquin’s engagement ring with his friend, the jeweler Kathy Waterman. (Link leads to video.)

I’ve said before that I find Moyer a little self-absorbed and I do sense something preening about the guy. He sucks in his cheeks a lot and strikes me as kind of stuck-up, but the more he talks about how much he loves Anna the more he’s growing on me. He told Rancic that he fell for Anna partly because she doesn’t take any of his crap. Now that’s a man after my own heart:

Stephen Moyer didn’t need a red carpet to see stars tonight.

The very-much-in-love True Blood star had far more to say about his “very funny and very frank and very direct and beautiful” costar and fiancée, Anna Paquin, than he did about any of the Emmy nominees.

“Firstly, I fell in love with her talent,” Moyer told E! News while walking the carpet outside Los Angeles’ Staples Center. “We were actually improvising and trying stuff, [like] ‘It doesn’t work this way, let’s do it another way,’ and so immediately I was very excited about that.

“And then after a few weeks, we’d finished working and I was back in London and she was in New York and I really, really missed her…”

It was then he knew she was the one.

And what about that proposal?

Moyer said he asked True Blood’s costume designer what his beloved’s ring size was so that he could plan for the ultimate surprise.

The proposal “was very intimate and quite surprising for her, I think, and we were by ourselves at dinner in Hawaii and…I surprised her.

“But it was something that surprised me probably more than it surprised her.”

Paquin, of course, has remained her frank, direct self throughout their courtship.

“She doesn’t take any of my nonsense,” Moyer said.

[From E! Online]

I like these two together and there’s something so straightforward and cool about Anna that I think that anyone she picks has to be decent by association. I’m still not 100% sold on Moyer, but we’ll see. Many of you commented that you find him charming and don’t get an arrogant vibe from him, and I think I’m coming around on that.

Moyer is also quoted as giving his sort-of blessing to the tamer, some-say lamer, “Twilight” vamps. He previously called Robert Pattinson’s character Edward Cullen the “Diet Coke of Vampires”, but now he’s trying to be more generous toward the younger competition. Moyer told E! at an Emmy after party “I think they serve a certain audience and we serve a certain demographic, so we can all exist happily together.” I bet he wanted to add “We can still kick their asses with our hands tied, though.”

Vague True Blood maybe-spoilers
In terms of the “True Blood” finale I just want to add that I really liked how they wrapped up that one pesky plot point and then added another semi-cliffhanger at the end. I don’t think it will be that much of a complication, considering how swiftly Sookie addressed that same problem earlier in the series, but you never know. At this point I’ve read all the books and you just can’t tell what will happen in the series because it doesn’t closely follow the novels at all. There’s one big revelation about Bill and Sookie in the books that may – and there is serious spoiler territory in the article linked in the next sentence – be incorporated into the series. Entertainment Weekly’s resident TV expert, Bill Ausiello, spoke with True Blood creator Alan Ball, and Ball wouldn’t say whether or not he would use that plot point in the show. I hope I worded all that vaguely enough for those of you are are fans and those who still want the chance to get into the show. It’s one of my favorites.

Anna and Stephen are shown at LAX airport on 9/20/09. Stephen is also shown at the Emmy Awards. Credit: Bauergriffinonline.com

Stop mentioning Twilight if you’re so above it. None of the Twilight cast is talking about TB.

  2. LolaBella says:

Okay, we get it, you’re in love!

I’m just pissed that I have to wait until June 2010 for Season 3 of True Blood! I’m already in serious Eric and Lafayette withdrawal!

  3. kai says:

can someone please make a funny joke about his haircut?

  4. LolaBella says:

@kai, I’m so happy you brought up his hair because it has been seriously bothering me since I saw it at the Emmys! LOL!

It’s just very Oliver Twist-y to me.

Maybe dating a younger woman has him wanting to do something ‘cool and hip’ with his hair to seem a bit younger too?

  5. ash says:

He sort of looks like Ewan McGregor…. SORT of. Ewan’s still much hotter IMO.

  6. Sanna says:

“Okay, we get it, you’re in love!”

If you don’t like what he syas, then don’t watch! How hard can it be?? Problem much….?? And it was SHE who asked him

I say this every time, but I can’t stand celeb bashing if the person doesn’t deserve it

And I still can’t see why ANYONE would find anything about him that’s arrogant. And I can’t see that he sucks in his cheecks. Sorry. Stephen is awesome!

  7. Sanna says:

“He told Rancic that he fell for Anna partly because she doesn’t take any of his crap.”

He didn’t say crap, he said nonsense. Slight difference

Really think you’re confusing British with “stuck-up” — he is incredibly charming, IMHO, and glad to hear you are “coming around on that” !! His relationship with Anna does seem to be a bit of a rarity in Hollywood — seems very real and not geared to the press.

  9. Bodhi says:

You read them all? Aren’t they TOTALLY addicting?! And sooooo much better than that Twilight drivel.

I really like Stephen & Anna together, they seem like a really good match.

  10. BitterBetty says:

It is definitely iffy how public they are with their relationship. especially Anna, who’s been a very classy low key celebrity until now. the show is doing really well so maybe they’re just riding high and letting their guard down, but, I get the feeling Moyer is enjoying his new found fame a little too much.

  11. Celebitchy says:

It’s been a while since I’ve been to England, but I do have British friends (I know, this sounds like the “I’m not racist, I have black friends” argument) that I see every day – honest. I honestly think he’s preening and it’s not a British thing, but I am open to changing my mind on it.

@Bodhi – yes I love them! I can’t find any other damn books that are quite as enjoyable now. I’ve tried to delve into the supernatural romance novels, but nothing is doing it for me! Plus I tried some of Harris’ other books – the Grave Sight ones – and couldn’t get into them. Please give recommendations!

  12. Allie says:

Stephen Moyer seems like a genuinely nice and down-to-earth person. I don’t get the stuck-up comments at all.

  13. gblinda says:

Speaking of preening, have you ever seen the guiliana/bill show, ugh, that woman is a princess. And her face barely moves, so bizarre.

There aren’t alot of great adult vampire stories out there anymore. I’ve been reading alot of the teen lit on my 1 1/2 hour train commutes. I’ve finished all the LJ Smith stories including Vampire Diairies and Secret Circle. Also, the House of the Night series by PC Cast, interesting twist on vamps. There’s a completely different series (only two actually) and the first book is the Hunger Games and the 2nd just came out, Catching Fire. Excellent books. Also, an older series but I couldn’t wait to finish one to move onto the other is The Uglies/Pretties/Specials series by Scott Westerfeld.

  14. princess pea says:

@ an – I’ve said this before about other celebs, but it bears repeating. Most quotes that we read are not independent thoughts the actor wanted to enlighten us with; they are usually responses to direct questions. Start with the sentence about Twilight: “Moyer told E! at an Emmy after party “I think they serve a certain audience and we serve a certain demographic, so we can all exist happily together.”” Now use your brains; he probably didn’t seek out a reporter just so he could share his thoughts. He was ASKED. So your admonishment that he should “stop mentioning Twilight”is misdirected. Maybe the media should stop asking actors in vampire shows about it, instead.

  15. lucy says:

I like him and I think they’re a cute couple, but I was a bit surprised he was so willing to talk about their relationship. I think he would have had every right to say the proposal was private and special and he’s going to keep it that way.
Giuliana is so annoying. She’s starting to look like an alien or something and she asks either stupid or prying questions. They really need better red carpet people.

  16. Bodhi says:

    Ditto Princess Pea!

  17. eva says:

“Reporters” ask the kinds of questions that will get quoted in sites like this. Do you really think he wants to talk about Robert Patinson? Or answer again and again about triangles and proposals and engagement rings. He’s sent out to events like this to promote the show. He doesn’t act stuck up and refuse to answer questions, he does it with good humor. And as a person who chews my cheeks when I’m thinking or nervous, I resent you implying that it makes me stuck up 🙂

  18. Ana says:

I don’t get how anyone could think he is preening and stuck-up. To me he seems open and candid and enthusiastic about things in a way that American stars are not (James McAvoy is similar – really genuine in interviews).

  19. I Choose Me says:

He smiles with his eyes. His beautiful blue eyes. And that accent…it’s official, I think I have a crush.

  20. Clea says:

    Ah… I love him.

Also, that bit in one of the videos where they ask him about Anna again and he just sort of laughs exasperatedly and rolls his eyes was great. She’s right though, it’s what everyone’s interested in.
