Enquirer: Whitney Houston calls Oprah a liar, diva war explodes

enquirer_oprahliar
I was riveted by Whitney Houston’s tell-all interview on Oprah last week, because Whitney brought the drama. She described Bobby Brown’s emotional and physical abuse, her own decline into drug addiction, and her decision to get clean. It was a powerful interview, and Oprah had every right to be proud of her “get”. But, as it turns out, all of the real drama was happening behind the scenes!

According to the National Enquirer’s cover story this week, Whitney and Oprah have been pissy with each other for years – and Whitney considered giving her first interview to someone else. In Whitney’s mind, Oprah needed her a lot more than she needed Oprah. That’s debatable, but Whitney might have a point. There were rumors Whitney was going to sit down with everyone from Diane Sawyer to Barbara Walters, but she ended up with Oprah for some reason. I tend to think that Whitney chose Oprah because everyone knows Oprah’s not the best interviewer.

Oprah Winfrey called her candid sit-down with Whitney Houston “the best interview I’ve ever done” – but The ENQUIRER has learned the two waged such a war of egos behind the scenes that the interview almost didn’t happen!

Insiders say bad blood has been simmering between the superstars for years over Whitney’s struggle with drugs – and their secret feud exploded off camera when the pop diva angrily blasted Oprah as a liar!

“Whitney knew Oprah’s show could help her clean up her tarnished image after years of drug use and her troubled marriage to Bobby Brown – and Oprah knew the interview could help her sagging TV ratings,” says an insider.

“But Whitney felt Oprah needed her more than she needed Oprah. Whitney was contacted by various media outlets vying for the ‘big get’ interview with her during her comeback campaign.”

Whitney, 46, had her pick of the litter, but chose Oprah because she wanted to appeal to her viewers and knew that if Oprah pushed her too far during the interview she was going to push back and expose some of Oprah’s own secrets!

“Whitney will never forget that when she was down and out, Oprah wanted NOTHING to do with her,” an insider told The ENQUIRER.

And THAT pissed-off Whitney to no end . ..

[From the National Enquirer]

Well, no one was on Whitney’s side when she made her descent into addiction. She was a mess, and she was practically radioactive. Whitney can’t blame Oprah for that. As far the general “diva versus diva” vibe of this report, I tend to believe it. There was tension during the interview that had nothing to do with the subjects being discussed, and everything to do with two large personalities duking it out for supremacy. Oprah generally doesn’t care to interview people who don’t kiss her ass – and Whitney thinks that kind of sycophancy is beneath her (she’s right).

In one last piece of Oprah news, it seems her ratings has significantly tumbled over the past year. She’s down 7% in the ratings, and media insiders are claiming Oprah’s “aura of invincibility is gone.” The causes for the drop include anything from average delines all over network television, to Oprah’s politics, to her alienation of conservative Christians with her New Age stuff. The Enquirer also has a piece of gossip about how Oprah is trying to force Beyonce into taking a regular position on the show – because Beyonce is ratings gold. Unfortunately for Oprah, Beyonce’s not really interested. Too bad.

What is the story with jen and that man ? Who is that?

  2. Lem says:

well that juicy had no real juice at all. BOO!! HISS!!

  3. princess pea says:

“jen and that man” – his name is Scott Stuber. He’s a producer for Love Happens, among other films, so it’s pretty reasonable to presume that’s a totally fabricated story based on a picture of the two of them at the premiere of their movie.

  4. filthycute says:

    Travolta looks so sad.

  5. hmm says:

Even down 7%, Oprah’s ratings are still higher than everyone else’s. This story sounds like complete rubbish and what details could Whitney spill? Oprah has already copped to her drug use in the past and before anyone chimes in with lesbian stories about Oprah and Gayle, Whitney is the last one to bring that up considering the rumors about her and her bff, Robin.

  6. Neelyo says:

Unless Beyonce is going to shake her booty and sing, I can’t see what purpose she’d serve on Oprah’s show. Speaking really isn’t her strength.

  7. raven says:

Oprah is a good interviewer, IMO. She does ask the tough questions and she can take up to an hour to talk to a guest so plenty of time to return to a topic or for followup. And the audience always gets to ask some questions so if Oprah misses a hard question, some audience member usually brings it up.

  8. OXA says:

I saw some bits on the news shows, to me, Whitney is still diva and I hate when Oprah does kiss ass interviews so a celeb can sell their newest crap.

  9. l says:

I think I’m a “normal, average” woman, so here is my reason I no longer watch oprah. It started with that whole James Frey “Million Little pieces” book mess. The way SHE handled it turned me off forever. Then seeing the headlines for the whole Mackenzie Phillips interview/subject matter, I feel she has completely jumped the shark and should now be referred to as Oprah Springer.

  10. Firestarter says:

l- ITA with everything you have said in your post.

  11. l says:

    oh, and Gerard is married????

  12. mollination says:

I don’t think Oprah is losing her stuff. She’s had her “peak” career-wise, and she’s in the place now where she can talk about whatever she wants. She knows damn well what’s alienating because she used to be very cautious of such topics and address them very neautrally.

And frankly, this article is clearly biased. “Everyone knows Oprah isn’t the best interviewer”??? I happen to think she’s a great interviewer – I’ve seen plenty of moments where she hasn’t let people squirm away like some of the more politically-based interview shows have, allowed by the atmosphere she has created on her show.

  13. whitedaisy says:

l and Firestarter, I am with you. I gradually decided to quit watching with the James Frey interview. The frosting on the cake was when Oprah had on Jerry Seinfeld’s wife to promote a recipe book that she largely plagiarized.
Did Oprah have her back to repent in humiliation a la James Frey? No. Jerry’s wife sent Oprah loads of very expensive shoes as a thank you for the now best-selling status of her book.
    Ugh. Hypocrite.

  14. Lem says:

I’ve never watched Oprah regularly or even occasionally. But I’ve seen enough to know she is a horrible interviewer.
She talks over her guest, she doesn’t listen for an answer, her questions don’t segway.
The interview with Octomom’s Dad comes to mind. I don’t think she heard a word he said. I had trouble hearing what he said because she kept talking over him. If she had listened the next logical question would have been ‘xyz’ but she wasn’t listening so she asked ‘opp’ which he had just told her.
anyway Oprah is savvy, and smart and influential but she is no journalist

  15. deevah says:

Beyonce brainy? Who wrote that article, Papa Knowles?

  16. Uzi says:

Celebrity journalism is joke, whether it’s television or print. It’s controlled by publicists and the stars/companies they represent. Can anyone name one interviewer who has the guts to ask tough questions? Most of their production staffs don’t even bother to fact check PR company generated information or do background research. Most of the public tolerates this, or is too naive to realize they’re being manipulated!

  17. QB says:

Whitney when to Oprah becaue she knew that Oprah would let her tell her story according to her and she would not ask any question that will be hard or confuse her .

  18. Firestarter says:

I agree with whoever said celebrity journalism is a joke. It is all controlled. Look at the ridiculous Larry King/Chris Brown interview.

Publicists are never going to allow their clients to get asked any harmful or tough questions, because that is not the name of the game. You don’t let your star get blind sided and look foolish or human.

  19. Praise St. Angie! says:

“Whitney thinks that kind of sycophancy is beneath her”

except when it’s directed toward HER.

  20. SolitaryAngel says:

@l: I agree with you too; I am an average woman with above–average intelligence, and when Oprah started with the fluff pieces and stopped doing shows on “real” subjects, she lost me. Suddenly there was an Oprah book club, magazine, blah blah Oprah this blah blah Oprah that everywhere I looked. I think she is highly overrated as a celebrity and as a reader. The first book hoax sealed the deal in concrete. I really used to like her, too. I wonder if Oprah will ever come out like Ellen did?

  21. Gypsy Rose says:

    What a load of crap!
All talk shows ratings have been sliding, Oprah still has the largest and richest audience.

  22. Allie says:

I got turned off to Oprah when she had her 50th birthday celebration episode. I know it was arranged by her friends but it was such an over-the-top display of ego. It was really barf-worthy. That and her celebrity butt-kissing were the end for me.

  23. wow says:

I wasn’t even going to comment on this article just based on the concept of putting women against each other. But I guess that will always be an issue.

Whitney was off the chains when she was on the pipe. I remember when she went off on Wendy Williams when Wendy confronted her about the rumors to. That was my first intro to Whitney not kissing anyone’s a$$. But you could tell she was in denial even way back then.

As for Oprah, she will still reign until she decides she’s ready to go. She still has an audience. Beyonce is already established and overexposed. A lot of people are tired of her already, so I doubt Oprah would ask her to take on a bigger position on her show.

If Oprah wants to help someone, she should go for an unknown. Give someone new the chance to shine in the same way someone gave her a chance starting out.

  24. Lynn says:

Gee I’m starting to get bored with Oprah because she has fallen into the “celebrity” trap. Her ego is too much to bear. Lately I find most celebrities believe their own publicity way too much…especially those one shot types like Kate and Jon Gosselin, any of the Khardasians and Spencer and whatever his wife’s name is. I just don’t understand their appeal at all. Just a bunch of fame wh*res.

  25. Jackie says:

I quit watching Oprah because of Dr. Phil. I thought he was horrible and I couldn’t believe she unleashed him on the rest of us

  26. 4Real says:

Hmmm, who would I believe an ex-druggie or a strong, sensible woman who has never taken drugs?

  27. J.D.M.J. says:

Enquirer: TV titan OPRAH WINFREY famously abhors bitch ’n ho’-spewing rappers, but “Jackass” KANYE WEST and she see eye to eye on one thing: both adore BEYONCE KNOWLES – and Oprah’s eyeing the brainy beauty as surefire salvation for her shocking ratings dive!
    “Brainy”? Who writes this crap?

  28. Aspie says:

Oprah’s ratings are only down 7 measly points and people are already treating it as if her demise is imminent? Please.

Oprah is still top dog in the ratings for all similar talk shows and people still buy the products that she recommends in droves. No one can deny that.

  29. Aspie says:

@ raven: I agree, Oprah is a good interviewer in my opinion. I think her interview with Whitney was much more revealing and was overall better than Diane Sawyer’s disastrous interview with Whitney years ago.

I think Oprah asks her guests appropriate questions and asks the same questions that most of her audience is also wondering and wants answered. She doesn’t always give “soft” interviews and asks tough questions of her guests. I think Whitney made a reasonable decision to use Oprah as her platform.

Ugh, this “diva drama story” sounds half-hearted and tired. How many times do we have to hear the same “diva” story featuring two prominent women of color? It’s getting a little old.

  30. Aspie says:

@ Lem: If Oprah is “no journalist”, then how is she able to successfully carry her own TALK show and run her own production company for over the past 20 years? Can’t just simply be all luck.

  31. STELLA LUNA says:

WHAT WAS OPRAH SUPPOSED TO DO COME AND SLAP THE CRACKPIPE OUT OF WHITNEY’S HAND AND TAKE HER PIGGY BACK TO REHAB!?? WHITNEY’S THE WORSE KIND OF DIVA AND NEEDS TO GET OVER HERSELF. THERE SHE GOES AGAIN BLAMING EVERYONE FOR HER PROBLEMS BUT HERSELF.

  32. Mary says:

I think Lady O needs to leave TV!!! Argue all you want but her ratings will never rise again!! Her new age views and her not wanting to come out of the closet are hurting her. I admire Ellen for her honesty and she does have a GREAT show!!

Hang it up Oprah!!! I will NEVER watch your show again!!!

  33. Pitterpatter says:

People seem to forget that talk shows are basically for entertainment. Oprah brings to her audience ideas and beliefs that interest her and tries to inform her viewers about current topics. If you aren’t interested in her views don’t watch the show after all it is called Oprah not Dateline or the Today Show.
Finally, just because a woman has a close, loving relationship with another woman doesn’t necessarily make that person gay. Besides what difference would it make in your life to know one way or the other?

  34. Ashley says:

I know my reason for not watching Oprah is because I’m 23 and could care less about chat shows and it’s not even a fun chat show. It’s Oprahs time to talk about Oprah and appeal to her ego. I can’t think of anyone I know (my generation) that watches it. Hopefully she’s on her way out. I’ll stick with my gays (Paul O’ Grady and Graham Norton). At least they bring the funny (even if Grady does it in a very old PG kind of way, it’s endearing).

  35. Ella says:

I believe that all this is show for them, i love O and also Whitney, and for O i really don’t believe she has to come out of closed because is here live and everybody have a private live. I’m working with a commission of gay ppl and i’m not lesbian.
