John Travolta testified in extortion case, said his son was autistic

John Travolta at extortion trial, Nassau, Bahamas
There are few things more terrible than losing your child. One of those things is having to re-live the death of your child in a courtroom, because someone is trying to extort from you and profit from that child’s death. A lot has been said about John Travolta – specifically about his ties to Scientology – but no one can argue that yesterday had to be one of the worst days in his life. Travolta and wife Kelly Preston appeared in a Bahamian courtroom today, where John had to give his testimony in an extortion trial. The actor was asked to recount the time leading up to his son Jett’s death, and for the first time, he publicly revealed that his late son was indeed autistic.

In what will no doubt go down as the second most difficult day of his year, John Travolta took the stand this morning in the trial of two Bahamians allegedly involved in a $25 million extortion plot against his family.

A grim Travolta and Kelly Preston arrived at a Bahamian courthouse this morning escorted by a fleet of security.

The actor took the stand and immediately began revisiting the moments before his 16-year-old son Jett’s death on Jan. 2.

Jett’s nanny awakened Travolta and Preston at roughly 10:15 a.m., the actor said, informing them that Jett was unconscious in his bathroom.

“He was pounding on the door upstairs where we were sleeping. I ran downstairs with my wife to help my son,” Travolta recalled, adding that when he got to him, one of the boy’s caretakers was already performing chest compressions.

The actor quickly jumped into action and began administering CPR to his son, whom he also acknowledged on the stand suffered not only from Kawasaki disease, but from autism as well.

“Jeff, the other nanny, was doing some compressions,” he said. “I was doing the breathing.

“I took the place of the woman who was doing CPR. She was an employee of Old Bahama Bay who I recognized as such.”

After a brief lunch break, Travolta returned to the stand and for the first time admitted that the long-time speculation was true about his son’s condition.

“He was autistic,” he said. “He suffered from a seizure disorder.”

Travolta said his son suffered seizures every five to 10 days and that each seizure lasted around 45 seconds. Jett would usually sleep for 12 hours after an episode.

Travolta did not get much further in his testimony: An objection was raised and the court recessed. It’s clear what spurred on the objection and whether Travolta will return to the stand.

Opening arguments kicked off yesterday, with the Bahamian chief prosecutor wasting no time getting to the heart of the matter.

“Contact was made with certain persons to communicate a threat to John Travolta,” Bernard Turner said, referring to codefendants Pleasant Bridgewater, a former senator, and Tarino Lightbourne, an ambulance driver, who together are alleged to have attempted to extort $25 million from the grieving star.

At the root of the case is a refusal-to-transport document: The trial’s first witness, police inspector Andrew Wells, said Travolta requested that Jett be taken directly to the airport rather than the hospital—the reasoning likely being that he could just as quickly get his son medical treatment in the U.S. as on the island—and signed a release form stating just that.

In the end, Jett was taken directly to the hospital after all. It’s unclear what accounted for the change in decision or why the threat of publication of the signed document seemed like a good bargaining chip for the alleged extortionists.

The second witness to take the stand yesterday, paramedic Derrex Rolle, testified that Jett was already unresponsive when the emergency services arrived at the actor’s vacation home.

The trial is expected to last three weeks.

I’m still kind of confused about this whole extortion plot and don’t really understand how this former senator and ambulance driver thought they’d get any money. It’s pretty clear that John Travolta signed the refusal to transport in a state of high emotion, hoping that he could transport his dying son by plane to the U.S. and possibly receive better care. When it was obvious that Jett was beyond medical intervention, he was transported to the hospital after all. So, again: where’s the motivation for extortion? These people are real lowlifes to exploit a grieving family. It must have been incredibly difficult for Travolta to take the stand and talk about his son’s last hours, but I’m glad he found the courage to do so. I hope these jerks go to jail for a long time.

Wonder how the “church” of $cientology will react to this, considering they believe that autism is “all in the mind” and that people with autism are sub-humans who should be exterminated quietly. Sorry, but Travolta’s church is nothing more than a modern-day Nazi party.

This is just heartbreaking. It’s bad enough they lost a child but they now must testify in court all the details. My prayers go out to the both of them.

My heart is breaking for JT and his family; the strength it takes to do what they’re doing–defending themselves against these #%!%# dirtbags and having to relive the worst moments of their lives–is amazing. My thoughts and prayers are going out to them in this terrible time; I really hope that John and Kelly hang on to each other, and the rumors that they’re breaking up aren’t true. They have always seemed to be rock-solid to me; I hope that they still are and that these scum get the maximum penalty for their heinous actions.

It is unthinkable. The courage and dignity that is being displayed by Travolta during this time is truly incredible.

I doubt at this point he is worried about what “C$” will do to him. The stronger hold they have over him is what they might do to those he loves who are still alive. Now that Jett is gone, and he has admitted to Jett’s autism, it is clear he is calling the church’s bluff on that one. His face looks to me, like that of one who has found some measure of peace. I hope so.

I’m glad he manned-up about it and confirmed his son was autistic. Who knows or cares what Co$ will whine in response but I hope this admission by Travolta helps their family heal. I suspect it will do just that.

Why don’t I just change my name to Bill Hicks in Mod and save y’all some trouble?

I totally agree w/ Diablo on this. I wish they had gotten Jett treatment for autism instead of denying it for so many years, it makes me sad and angry.

I think that John is finally realizing that Scientology is B.S.- the so-called religion that claimed they could “better” and “save” Jett clearly failed him… the whole time, Scientology was just blowing smoke (which, as we all know, they are really good at), and I think after losing his son he realizes this.

Speaking out and even acknowledging autism is a huge no-no in Scientology. That’s what makes me think that John has had enough and no longer cares- Scientology will of course try to call fair game him for this, or even go so far as to disconnect and label him an SP, but there’s nothing they can do to him, really. He’s already suffered the greatest loss a parent could face.

I wish he and Kelly nothing but the best- I can’t fathom how difficult the loss of a child must be, especially when it could have easily been prevented with proper medical treatment. I don’t fault them for doing what they thought was right at the time- we all know who does the brainwashing and who is to blame ultimately.

Oh my God, this poor family…having to live this over and over and over.

I have never felt so totally sorry for a celebrity before. I don’t know what else to say but that my heart is broken for them right now.

I cannot imagine the pain of having to hash this out in court like this. Oh my GOD.

  10. girl says:

Prayers for them. I can’t imagine either why the extortionists would think they could get money for releasing the document too. Anyone who thinks one of the most beloved people in their lives might die would likely do the same thing: try to get them to what is likely a more state of the art hospital, especially if they can reasonably think they would get them there pretty quickly.

I hope they can have some measure of peace. Scientology or no, the Travoltas are in excruciating pain that I can’t imagine ever goes away completely.

  11. Zoe says:

If John Travolta really realized what BS the Church was, he would publicly speak out against it and warn people of the dangers of the cult. As one of the few prominent Scientologists, his words would mean a lot.

That said, I’m still not feeling sympathy for this guy. The person I feel for is Jett, who bravely lived out his life in spite of having parents that denied he was autistic because of their ideological beliefs and denied him the very drugs that would have saved him as most drugs that treat seizures are psychotropic and Scientologists don’t believe in them. Not only did he NOT get the care and treatment he needed for Autism, he died on NO MEDICATION despite his FREQUENT SEVERE SEIZURES. The negligence here is outstanding. I’m surprised the Travoltas aren’t facing criminal charges as many people in faith healing situations who deprive their families and children of the medical care that would have saved them often do. Something like this should NEVER HAPPEN again, and if Travolta has learned anything from this tragedy, he should take responsibility and speak out. I highly doubt he’s seen the light, brainwashed people rarely do. I have seen several people whose lives were destroyed by this cult, and I can tell you it has beyond earned the reputation it has.

  12. crash2GO2 says:

ZOE – are you certain he was on no medication? I know what the party line was at the time of his death, but to date I haven’t seen any toxicoloy reports.

But good for you for being Jett’s advocate. You’re totally right, and I am sure that is a huge part of what is eating Travolta alive right now.

  13. Firestarter says:

@Bill Hicks in the Mod- You aren’t the only one. I am “Firestarter in the mod “as well!

  14. TwinkleToes says:

The Enquirer already had the scoop way back when he admitted his son was autistic on the police report.

  15. Hieronymus Grex says:

The magic aliens will not be pleased with you, John.

  16. Andrea says:

maybe (perhaps this is overly hopeful/naive) this will really start to undo scientology – between the autism acknowledgment and the public defense of the extortion attempt, the travoltas seem like jett’s death has removed any concern for what scientology or the public might think of what they do – if travoltas decide to really start going public with calling BS on scientology, i dont think there’s much tommy girl or that scary david person can do – and i doubt the travoltas give a shit anymore about whether they piss off tommy girl or david

  17. Aspie says:

My heart goes out to this family for their loss. I hope they will now recognize that CO$ did not “save” their son and will finally leave the cult.

  18. Legend says:

All pure conjecture here, but could the form Travolta signed have noted John’s son suffered from autism? If so, did the blackmailers think that, being a Scientologist they could blackmail Travolta with this admission?

  19. elvisgrace says:

@Zoe – exactly my feelings on this whole mess, but much better put than I could ever do.

  20. Ellen Smith says:

The Travoltas have claimed they had full time caregivers for Jett. If so, why was an employee of the resort administering CPR? Why not the nanny in charge of Jett? A lot of things just don’t add up with the entire story surrounding this boy’s death. But, as suspected by many all along, he did have autism. Also, my reading on Kawasaki Syndrome indicates that it is extremly rare in older children. At one point Kelly Preston claimed carpet fumes were the cause of the disease in her son. However, she had no problem posing in recent ads for Karastan carpeting. Somehow this couple was not thinking clearly on a variety of levels.
