Matt Damon’s teenage daughter often tells him that his movies suck

Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso have four daughters: Alexia, 22, Isabella, 15, Gia, 12 and Stella, 10. If you know anything about kids aged 10-18, their main purpose in life is to knock their parents down a peg whenever they have a chance. When their father is a world-famous actor with an Academy Award for screenwriting, the best way to do that is to hit him in the scripts. While promoting his latest award hopeful, Stillwater, Matt told CBS Sunday Morning that Isabella won’t watch any of his well-done films. She prefers to only to see the crap so she can remind him how much they sucked. Yahoo has more about his interview:

Matt Damon may be one of the most famous actors in the world, but the Oscar winner’s four daughters seem to be in charge at home.

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning to promote his new film Stillwater, Damon, 50, explained that his kids show no mercy when ranking on dear old dad. In fact, his 15-year-old daughter, Isabella, refuses to see her dad’s beloved film, Good Will Hunting.

“She doesn’t want to see any movies that I’m in that might be good. She just likes to give me shit,” said Damon, laughing. “My daughter said, ‘Hey remember that movie you did, The Wall?’ I said, ‘it was called The Great Wall.’ She goes, ‘Dad, there was nothing great about that movie.’ She keeps my feet firmly on the ground.”

[From Yahoo!]

How many points can I award Isabella for that set-up and delivery on her Great Wall jab? Whatever the number, she gets all of them. If I had to guess, I’ll bet his girls have watched all Matt’s good films without his knowledge, but they’ll never tell. They probably brag to their friends when he’s out of earshot. I mean, are you telling me they’ve never seen Thor: Ragnarök? Actually, I love Matt as an actor. I loved Good Will Hunting but I went to IMDb to remind myself of his other stuff and wow, there are so many of his films I recommend. Even in some of his crap films, he still did a good job. I’m sure Isabella is more versed in his career than she’s letting on. Good for her. Somebody needs to keep him humble.

I don’t know about Stillwater. I know it’s Hollywood’s take on the Amanda Knox case, but it looks like such a bummer. (I get that’s the point.) Plus, Matt’s truck driver cosplay is throwing me. I’m sure it will be all over the awards season, but I think I’ll sit this one out. Maybe Isabella and I can go see Thor: Love and Thunder instead.

Here’s the Stillwater trailer, you can decide for yourself:

Ooofta. His outfit in that last pic is…bad.

  2. Ajsquared says:

So… let me get this right… the story of a woman in prison (wrongfully or rightfully) wasn’t compelling enough that they had to center a man in order to get the movie made?

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

    • Robyn says:

Right? Same as it ever was.

    • Isabella says:

I weary of Matt and Liam and Chris Pratt etc. rescuing women/children in their movies (as if they were heroes in real life). We can take care of ourselves. We just need men to stop endangering our lives.

The Maga flag waving in this film is just ugh. And why does Matt’s wife always looks like she wants to cry when standing next to him?

For a moment I thought they made a movie about the band from Almost Famous.

Oh no, Matt, those little black loafers! Throw them away today

I saw that interview on Sunday and I know this will make me sound like a bitch but…something about him just seems off in some way. I’m not saying he’s shady or anything but I just don’t totally buy the nice guy act.

I’m generally speaking here in expressing my opinion that it’s amazing to me how the world has gotten to be so jaded that people don’t trust the actions of someone who may just be trying to live their best life as father, husband, and man. There are only vague rumors of even a hint of dirt on Matty, and somehow people feel a bit offended by the fact that he doesn’t display any obvious vices, enjoys being with his wife and children, and believes in family vacations with friends who seem to share the same ‘family’ vibe.

This is a man who grew up with a close family vibe. He had a close bond with his now deceased father (even though his parents were divorced by the time his mom moved 10-year-old Matty and his brother near 8-year-old Ben AfflecK’s mom and brother) and has a close bond with his mother and his brother.

Like many of us, Matt was a bit of a shit and wild boy who enjoyed a good party and a good ‘F-word’ in his youth. But he grew up. He has said that in his late 20’s he began feeling lonely and it hit him hard during the Bourne Identity shoot. He wanted to share his life and experiences with someone. He met Luci at just the right time.

Sometimes people are just who they appear to be. It’s almost like people would like Matt Damon better if he was more like Ben Affleck, to whom people seem to give a HUGE pass no matter what he does.

      • Darla says:

I don’t dislike Damon very much, but I like Ben better because I find him smarter and more talented, not because he’s a mess in his personal life. Also, I don’t buy that any movie star is this clean, sorry. I also think he can be quite the mansplainer and whitesplainer, and I find that annoying. Do I think he’s an awful guy? No. Not at all.

Yvette, DITTO Every comment negative.what is wrong with people. A nice puff piece and it’s like I just gotta take a dump. Thank you Yvette for your comment.

      • Stephanie says:

@Yvette I was speaking just from what I know about Damon, which are the headlines I’ve read. What I have read in headlines about him- from Project Greenlight to his defending Louis CK- really just shows me there’s more to him. He presents a nice guy image but obviously people are complex and to me, when speaking on serious topics, he seems slightly out of touch.

      • KissMyA**23 says:

@Yvette… Yep. Thank you for the most part… But I do give more credit to Ben because like @Darla said, he’s smarter and more talented. I’ve always had a soft spot for both of them though.

      • Isabella says:

Matt is a good actor and I like his daughter’s joke, but he was a pompous jerk on Project Greenlight, where you saw the real him. Worst moment: When he explained to a black woman (the only one in the room) that it’s no biggie when the only black character in a film is a hooker who gets hit by her white pimp. Matt had to apologize when the episode aired because he couldn’t even listen to the complaint. Instead he interrupted the black woman to claim that diversity is important only backstage–not in the actual film! He actually talks like this:

“The only team that’s left with diversity is the team that announced that they liked this script the most as it is, and that’s Leo and Kristen,” Damon pointed out. “Everyone else had major problems with it, with exactly the things that you’re bringing up, and exactly the things that we brought up to each other. I think on the surface, they might look like one thing, but they might end up giving us something that we don’t want. And when we’re talking about diversity, you do it in the casting of the film, not in the casting of the show.”

I think we are in a moment where people are looking a bit more closely at people we have always been told are “one of the good guys” or an “activist” or whatever and trying to figure out how much of that was actually earned. I feel like with the advent of social media, the mechanics of how people create their image has become more clear to people and it’s always a little jarring when you apply the same analysis to people who you became aware of before you started really paying attention to social media. It’s like you’ve been telling yourself there are people who really try to do the right thing in HW and that’s how you know it is possible and then you figure out, oh, wait- the people who do the right thing are just hiding their behaviors better. I mean, there are degrees of behavior but I always side eye it a bit when someone puts information out there about what a “nice normal guy” they are, with bits of information that are meant to make you think they are down to earth because it seeds a picture of their life that isn’t accurate. See also, George Clooney – hands on parent with Amal who is totally looking after those kids all day and those kids somehow, miraculously, speak Italian, even though George and Amal don’t and no nannies are mentioned.

I wonder if she has seen we bought a zoo

  7. detritus says:

The Amanda Knox story is so scary. I watched a true crime documentary and I don’t think I could watch another recounting.

  8. Lena says:

This movie got a great reception at Cannes and it sounds like Matt just might win his first acting Oscar. He’s always done a good job even in trash like we bought a zoo. I’ve never seen Thor thank you very much, but I’ll see this.

    • TeamMeg says:

Excited to see Camille Cottin in a big Hollywood film—she is such fun to watch! (Loved her in “Call My Agent”, the French comedy series.0 And just recently (on HBO, I think) I rewatched the 3 Bourne movies back to back. Matt Damon so good, and also a pleasure to watch.

  9. Granger says:

On a totally superficial note that’s not even on topic: I think his wife is just stunning.

    • KissMyA**23 says:

I actually never liked him until he started dating his wife. Now I think he’s great. But back when Bourne and before were made, not so much. I was annoyed at my then boyfriend for dragging me to every one of his movies. I’ll definitely be watching Stillwater the weekend it comes out.

And yes, Luciana is stunning. I think she makes him more likeable too.

    • Isabella says:

Lucia looks uncomfortable when posting with him on red carpet. I can’t figure out if she’s shy or if she and Matt aren’t all that happy behind the scenes. It’s hard to be married to a big star, especially when you no longer have your own career. He is always on the road. Agree she’s beautiful. Doesn’t tell us anything about him.

  10. Dashen'ka says:

It never occurred to me to try to “knock my parents down a peg” when I was a teen. Maybe because they were working-class immigrants and not celebrities. I think it’s awful, and not because I’m some big proponent of filial piety and parental worship or a Boomer stereotype (I’m a Millennial). It’s just about mutual respect for each other as human beings, and I don’t think teenagers are incapable of that. But being a rude critical a**h*le is normalized so here we are I guess. I bet this kid likes the money, lifestyle, and access his “sucky” movies afford to her. Off my lawn lol.

    • teecee says:

Yeah, I think his daughter’s comments are not cute at all. Very disrespectful.

But then I, too, am a daughter of immigrants and have been raised with different values.

  11. RoyalBlue says:

he must have worn that last outfit to annoy/embarrass his daughters. brings back memories of my dad wearing the most embarrassing outfits.

  12. Anna says:

Ugh. Sorry but most teenagers suck. I can’t even watch anything on tv with teenagers because it’s so caustic and entitled, or at least how (well-off white) teenagers are allowed to behave. (I’m not talking about all the teens especially BIPOC who have had to behave like adults from a young age and deserve all the love and support.) I started watching this new series The White Lotus which is kind of funny (love Connie Britton), great cast, but honestly have to fast forward through any of the parts involving the teenage girls because it makes me sick to my stomach to witness their behavior (which is pretty typical, not just on tv). Not sure why the writers gave their storylines so much time but it’s irritating. They’re rude, mean, unkind, and self-serving. Yes, I’m sure #NotAllTeens but god, I just can’t imagine having to deal with that every moment of every day.

    • Granger says:

I deal with teenagers all day and I don’t think they suck. They’re figuring out who they are and their place in the world. Most of them are full of curiosity, enthusiasm (for the things they love), and hope for a better future. Can they be self-absorbed and rude? You bet they can. But I know a few grown adults who are self-absorbed and rude, too. In fact, even more rude than teens, because adults seem to think they’ve earned that right.

  13. Bettyrose says:

Ugh @ the good ole boy American dad trying to save his daughter. That isn’t even an accurate depiction of the Amanda Knox story. It looks like it’s unironically playing on American xenophobia. Matt Damon is better than this.

    • Isabella says:

Amanda’s dad is a shopping store executive. Her step-father, a tech guy. her mom is a teacher. They’re not Maga people.

      • bettyrose says:

EXACTLY! I’m not even saying that Damon’s character is supposed to be MAGA, but they’re definitely playing up a simple country guy caught up in a international drama beyond his comfort zone – not at all accurate to the real Knox family and thus feels like total pandering. I’m not here for that.

    • tealily says:

I don’t think it’s meant to be an accurate depiction of the story, but it seems like it’s trying to take a sensational story and make it even more sensational. Play up the cultural divide and add some jingoism.

    • Lee13 says:

Agreed 100%!! And they take a story about a young woman living through trauma and caught up in a murder mystery, stuck in prison and make it all about… her father?? Why do we need this story through his perspective?

  14. Al says:

Reviews of the film have been pretty good and it doesn’t seem much connected to the Knox case.

  15. serena says:

The Amanda Knox story huh.. I’ve watched /read news and documentaries about that and I still think she is guilty but she got to come back home unscatered and even became some sort of celebrity, smh.
