Diane Sawyer is ready to be Ted Lasso’s love interest: ‘I’m in’

Last Friday, the long wait for Season two of Ted Lasso finally ended. I won’t spoil anything that wasn’t in the teaser just in case some of you haven’t gotten the chance to see the episode yet. This story involves something from the show, but as I said it’s not a spoiler. During one of the scenes team owner Rebecca, played by the majestic Hannah Waddingham, asked Ted Lasso, Jason Sudeikis, if he’d like a drink. In typical Ted fashion, he answered with a roundabout comparison. The exchange was:

Rebecca: What do you say to a cocktail, Coach Lasso?
Ted: Oh, the same thing I’d say to Diane Sawyer if she ever asked me out on a date: Yes, please.

It’s a fairly typical response for Ted: far more elaborate than it needs to be, but so wholesome it warms your heart. And the subject Diane Sawyer is so seemingly random, but a respectable and smart choice – the whole thing makes you fall in love with Ted all over again.

But was it that innocent? Or was it an elaborate personal ad cleverly worked into the dialogue? Ms. Sawyer herself caught wind of Ted’s line and responded on Twitter:

[From Twitter via Yahoo!]

Yahoo and other outlets didn’t have many details: did Diane watch the show and think she’d go for it? Is she hoping for a few episode arc? Did someone send her the clip and she just decided to blow up the internet? Who knows? But it is fun, and we deserve fun right now. Diane was married for over 25 years to director Mike Nichols before his death in 2014. Ted’s marriage, unfortunately, was not salvageable and he signed the final papers last season. Ted’s from Kansas, Diane’s originally from Kentucky. There’s only a 35-year age difference – I dunno, I think it could work. And apparently, so does Ted, because he saw Diane’s social media wink and winked right back:

Which can only mean that now Lady Gaga needs to enter the discussion. Maybe Ted can keep bringing famous women into the conversation with each homespun reference he comes up with. Before the finale, Angela Merkel will be accepting tickets to Richmond’s championship game. *fingers crossed* Whatever happens, the world will be watching because season two is already bringing in huge numbers.

Diane’s response is also notable because, as Austin Kellerman pointed out, this was her first tweet in 14 months. With everything that has happened in the last 14 months, this is what brought her back from her hiatus? Brilliant. However, I was equally intrigued by this twitterer’s question:

I would love to see a back and forth between Trent Crimm, The Independent and Diane Sawyer. Nothing elaborate, just about five-line exchange of dialogue would be perfect.

BTW, I am well aware that Ted is not a real person. And I am not actually advocating for a Jason S. and Diane S. love connection. I think it’s cute that Brendan Hunt wrote a seemingly throwaway line about Diane Sawyer to round out a scene and now it’s caught the heart of the nation. It’s like a metaphor of the show itself.

Also, because I love you, here is – supposedly – a recipe that successfully recreates Ted’s famous Rebecca-wooing biscuits.

Diane Sawyer needs to address her disrespectful interview with Britney Spears first. I’ll wait.

      Good point!

Ooo this! This was the absolute first thing I thought. Diane needs to stay in the shadows because a bunch of now grown Whitney and Britney fans have their Twitter fingers ready.

      100%.

Yes. Nothing else comes to mind when hearing her name or seeing her face at this point. She needs to apologize for her violent misogyny. Defending a republican’s (Kendel Ehrlic, Trump trash) statement about how she wants to murder a young woman for not practucing female modesty is just as dangerous as what Chrissy Teigan did.

Diane Sawyer is 75 years old. She looks amazing. Plastic surgery used the right way, to keep a freshening up of your face look, not turn it into some brand new overfilled cheeks you never had in your life and over botoxed, aka the cat-face look, like Scary Madonna. Diana has beautiful skin.

That was a super cute comment and just so Ted. I’m so looking forward to this season. The first episode was everything I hoped it would be.

And because I’m apparently an Apple Plus pusher – if you like musicals at all, you should check out Schmigadoon! its really cute and enjoyable and we are liking it a lot.

I skimmed this article wondering if the elephant in the room would be mentioned. Has she addressed that interview with Britney? Because that was horrible.

I watched Season One last weekend after finding out about the show on here—thank you!

Can’t wait to watch season 2! I discovered Ted Lasso while cat sitting, the people I cat sit for had every streaming service known to man so I indulged. I am going to wait for all of season 2 to drop on Apple+ before I sign up for a free trial and then cancel lol. I don’t know of anything else on that service is worth it (maybe Defending Jacob with Chris Evans and Michelle Dockery?) but I might just get it for season 3.
