Mike Richards filmed a week of ‘Jeopardy,’ will oversee the hunt for a new host?

It’s difficult to decipher the message we should get from the Mike Richards/Jeopardy debacle. It’s easy enough to say “well, someone should have stepped in and stopped this from happening in the first place,” but Mike Richards was the guy, the executive producer of Jeopardy, who would have been responsible for stopping his own hiring. Instead, Richards faked a contest to see who should be the new Jeopardy host, then he hired himself and tried to whitewash his own sexist, problematic past statements. No one even “fired” Richards – on Friday, he was allowed to “step down” as host, a position he Dick Cheney’d himself to get. He remains as Jeopardy’s EP and will likely be responsible for hiring his replacement as host. From the NY Times:

Mike Richards’s first and, as it turned out, last day of filming as the host of “Jeopardy!” began with a gathering that executives at the long-running quiz show hoped would symbolize a fresh start. In a taped ceremony on Thursday at the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, Calif., Sony revealed that the “Jeopardy!” studio would be renamed for Alex Trebek, the beloved host who died last year. Mr. Richards smiled as cameras rolled and Mr. Trebek’s widow and children looked on.

Less than 24 hours later, Mr. Richards had quit his hosting gig, “Jeopardy!” production was placed on hold, and the show’s fans were struggling to understand how a television institution and staple of the American living room could have botched a succession plan after 37 years of stability and success.

Sony said Mr. Richards would remain as executive producer. But he must contend with a dispirited “Jeopardy!” staff whose frustrations erupted in an emotional meeting on Thursday, where crew members told Mr. Richards his past behavior had imperiled the show’s reputation, according to two people who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive internal discussions.

The show’s search will now start again with another series of guest hosts. Mr. Richards’s week of telecasts, including five episodes that he filmed on Thursday, are set to air the week of Sept. 13. Mayim Bialik, the sitcom star, will remain as host of “Jeopardy!” prime-time specials.

On Friday, Sony said in a statement that it had been “surprised” to learn of Mr. Richards’s offensive podcast comments, but praised him for leading “Jeopardy!” in the wake of Mr. Trebek’s death. “It is our hope that as executive producer he will continue to do so with professionalism and respect,” Sony said.

Sony executives have no business being “surprised” by Richards’ podcast comments considering he was facing corporate investigations into very similar behavior from his time as producer on The Price Is Right. You hire a well-known toxic bro and then express surprise that he acts like a toxic bro? Nah. And Richards absolutely needs to be pulled off the search committee for his replacement. If he’s allowed to continue, Richards will ensure that someone like Joe F–king Rogan takes over.

The NYT also had this interesting little aside in their coverage – apparently, Sony CEO Anthony Vinciquerra, Ken Jennings and Buzzy Cohen were all invited to watch Richards’ first day of filming. Cohen and Kennings were “escorted from the soundstage to a nearby green room, where they watched the taping over a closed feed.” Richards wouldn’t let them watch from the audience. That’s the kind of toxic male bullsh-t we’re dealing with.

    What a mess!

  2. paranormalgirl says:

I’m hoping that Kal Penn gets a chance to guest host. He has a game show on Food Network right now and he’s a good host.

  3. Ariel says:

So, Mike Richards is in the position to pick someone- who wants to put money on another white guy, who thinks he can measure up to Trebek, but clearly cannot.

  4. Becks1 says:

So are they going to do another round of guest hosts? Bring on Mayim full time? Pull someone else from the “tryouts”? It’s pretty appalling that they messed this up so badly. Alex was sick for a while, and even if he wasn’t, no one is immortal – I can’t believe that their plan for another host was “let’s do 6 months of fake tryouts and then give it to the EP anyway, and if that doesn’t work, oh well, no clue, but there shouldn’t be any issues with that plan so lets not worry about it.”

    • Concern Fae says:

Mayim’s anti-vaxx background makes her unfit for the job. Yeah, she walked it back, but anything less than a history full throated praise for everyone taking on their full public health responsibilities makes one unfit for any job where the truth is important.

      • Becks1 says:

but they are already bringing her on as a part-time host for the primetime specials and the like, so it seems like the obvious answer would just be to have her as the full time host at this point (since Jeopardy does not seem bothered by her past comments and background). Maybe she didn’t want it?

      • Driver8 says:

She has also said tons of problematic things about other women. I think she’s gross and if they hire her full time, I’ll never watch Jeopardy again.

      • Dutch says:

She currently has a sitcom on FOX, so I don’t know how possible giving her the full-time hosting gig is.

      • Lola says:

Her smug comments on how her “modest clothing” and “not flirting with men” keep her safe from rape and sexual harassment make me infuriated.

Hey bitch, the first time I was sexually assaulted I was a child wearing a long sleeved flannel nightgown that went from my collarbone to the floor.

Years later I was sexually harassed and targeted by a stalker at work wearing the following outfit every day: a yellow hard hat, a winter coat, a reflective vest, safety glasses, work gloves, baggy sweatpants, and steel-toed boots.

FUCK YOU Bialik and those who act smug about what they wear making them perfect and if we got raped or harrassed we must not have been as modestly perfect as them.

  5. AndaPanda says:

It’s apparent Levar Burton should be the host. Give the people what they want!

    • Tootsie McJingle says:

      Hear hear!

    • snappyfish says:

YES!! Levar Burton. He was great. & got better as the week went on and had the best charity. Reading is Fundamental. Please Please Please not Ken Jennings

    • TIFFANY says:

Especially after hearing about how his week went.

So not only was he given the week that was pre empted because of the Olympics, he was also forced to film all his episodes in one day ( the norm is two to three episodes) with no corrections or retakes to make the show be smoother.

      Richards is straight garbage.

But naw, LaVar deserves better and his own original show.

      • mollly says:

Richards totally sabotaged LaVar because he knew he was the fan favorite. He’s such trash.

  6. North of Boston says:

It dawned on me that the vetting Sony and Co bypassed when they anointed him AT’s successor should have actually been done way back when (1-2 years ago) before they offered him the EP job. If Sony had decent hiring processes for EPs he should have never even been at Jeopardy in the first place.

That is, unless Sony doesn’t mind having racist, misogynist, sophomoric jack holes running their flagship show and having other people’s livelihoods in their hands.

  7. reef says:

Nothing I’ve heard about Mike Richards and Sony execs makes me think anyone that’s not a white man should work at Jeopardy. The writing is on the wall. People keep saying Levar but I wouldn’t wish that type of environment on him. I like him.

  8. tx_mom says:

I’m imagining him making another search and realizing that HE should be the host! (Again.)

  9. Pix says:

Please release this man from the executive producer position. He has done more damage to the Jeopardy brand than anyone one could have imagined. Reassign him, fire him or whatever. He does not need to be in that position and it’s really embarrassing that this hasn’t been done yet.

  10. Nikole says:

I’m partial to Dr. Sanjay Gupta because he was the host when I won! 🤓

    • Becks1 says:

OOh really??? That’s so exciting!! Congratulations!

    • Erinandpet says:

Nikole from Iowa! Awesome! I like Sanjay Gupta too but my husband had an issue with the fact that when a contestant got something wrong, he didn’t phrase the answer in the form of a question.

  11. Pinellas Pixie says:

Mike Richards has stated on his crappy podcast that he prefers tv hosts who are white men. I don’t remember his exact wording that that’s what he said, With him in charge of the search again, no one but a white man need apply. They had once chance to find a host with integrity who could not be Alex Trebek but continue what Alex did with Jeopardy. They failed when they let Richards Cheney himself. I don’t believe for a minute they didn’t know about the lawsuits at Price is Right or about the podcast. They’ve worked with him for a year so they knew his attitudes. They clearly have no problem with him or his behavior. Sadly, I’m so done with Jeopardy.

  12. Janice Hill says:

    He needs to be fired.

  13. The Recluse says:

If Sony had any backbone, they would cashier this tool out completely and put someone else in charge.
