Harvey Weinstein & ‘sources close to Brad Pitt’ dispute Angelina Jolie

In Angelina Jolie’s Guardian Weekend interview, she spoke in greater depth than she ever has before about Harvey Weinstein. Jolie was one of the first big-name celebrities to speak out about Weinstein – both Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow spoke to the NY Times in the fall of 2017, confirming that Weinstein has sexually harassed them and attempted to assault them. Jolie worked with Weinstein-as-producer once, when she was 21, on Playing By Heart. She said, “It was beyond a pass, it was something I had to escape. I stayed away and warned people about him. I remember telling Jonny, my first husband, who was great about it, to spread the word to other guys – don’t let girls go alone with him.” She also said she was asked to do The Aviator but she turned it down because Weinstein was involved, and “It was hard for me when Brad” worked with Weinstein on Inglorious Basterds and Killing Them Softly.

Well, TMZ covered the quotes in their exploitative, accusatory way, and wouldn’t you know, both Brad Pitt and Harvey Weinstein decided to provide denials to TMZ:

6:10 PM PT — Weinstein, through his assistant, tells TMZ … “It’s very clear to me that this is for more sales on Angie’s BOOK. THERE WAS NEVER an assault, and NEVER an attempt to assault.” HW adds, “It is brazenly untrue and clickbait publicity. You’re Angelina Jolie, every male and female in the world, I’m sure, shows interest in you. Is the whole world assaulting you?”

3:12 PM PT — Sources close to Brad tell TMZ … he never “teamed up” with Weinstein for “Inglourious Basterds” — he was simply part of a movie that Tarantino directed, which happened to get distributed by TWC.

[From TMZ]

First, let’s talk about Brad – notice “sources close to Brad” don’t mention that he apparently sought out Weinstein as a producer on Killing Them Softly, which Jolie specifically referenced in her interview. And no, Brad doesn’t get to shrug off the Weinstein connection to Tarantino. Even Tarantino had to eat that – Weinstein was hands-on with Tarantino and QT’s films for 25 years. Weinstein shaped QT’s career and Weinstein was a huge part in all of the promotion and awards-campaigning for Tarantino’s films. Brad made a choice to not care about the association, even though both Jolie and Paltrow had told him what Weinstein did to them.

As for Weinstein… what a disgusting piece of sh-t. He’s basically saying that all he did was make a pass at Jolie. I believe HER. If she says she had to “escape” and that it was an attempted assault, then that’s what happened. Plus, that was his M.O. Luring women into enclosed spaces (offices or hotel rooms), locking them in and trying to rape them.

  1. Wiglet Watcher says:

So, Harvey is gaslighting another one of his victims and Brad is defending a known and convicted rapist? I get that right.

    • Ladychef83 says:

Wait. Does no one remember Paltrow’s story about how when she told Brad about Weinstein coming after her in a hotel Brad l was so angry he threatened to Weinstein?

      • Princess Peach says:

I do! Even if Angelina is lying Brad knew exactly what type of person HW was and still chose to work with him.

      • Zapp Brannigan says:

Oh I remember that, making out that he was the big hero for GP but his wife and the mother of his kids he slams in the press and sides with the convicted rapist. How can anyone defend Pitt after this?

      • BlueNailsBetty says:

But did Brad actually confront/threaten HW? Or did he lie to Gwyneth so she would think he did while protecting his obviously strong relationship with HW? Is there someone else who can confirm Brad’s story? If not, then we only have the word of a fellow abuser about what he did or did not say to HW.

I suspect Brad is a very convincing liar. Most abusers are.

    • Naomi says:

      Angelina wasn’t lying. This is Harvey’s M.O.

  2. D says:

There’s so much I could say but my first thought was “Harvey Weinstein still has an Assistant?” What person would want to do that and what exactly are they assisting with?

    • MY3CENTS says:

I was hoping that shit was hiding under a rock somewhere to ashamed to come out, apparently he’s trying to rehabilitate his image?

    • Pix says:

I know right? Why on earth would he still have an assistant and who in their right mind would want to work for him? These men are disgusting.

  3. Jais says:

    ‘sure, brad’

  4. Darla says:

So the convicted rapist denies the story that he tried to rape another woman? I wonder whom to believe?

  5. Annie says:

Despite him purposely ignoring seeking Harvey for KTS, this is the first time that Mr Pitt hasn’t responded aggressively. Normally, they’d be calling her names.

As fo Harvey, is that even him responding? He shares the same PR person as Pitt.

  6. Oh_Hey says:

    Eww to both these dudes.
And to the inevitable BP defenders that flood any post about him – he’s already on record as knowing about and “defending” goop and Angelina came way after. Her accusations against Weinstein are also on record before this interview. He knew about Harvey, minimized his lovers traumas, and worked with him anyway multiple times. If the timeline was true before it can’t suddenly suddenly become a lie because you don’t like it.

    • Lilly (with the double-L) says:

@Oh_Hey yep double and infinity eww on these two. It’s very telling of a type when men go on the attack of the same woman. I do think she’s trying to salvage a positive picture of the father of her children, for their sake – live up to it BP.

    • Mac says:

This is how Hollywood works. Abusers, bullies, racists, etc. with money and power can make or break your career. It’s horrible.

      • Golly Gee says:

And that includes the media. I just made the following comment in the other Angelina thread before I saw this which deals more specifically with TMZ (The Misogynist Zone).

TMZ all but calls Angelina a liar, implying that she did not object to Brad working with Harvey. The logic being that if Brad stood up to Harvey on Gwyneth‘s behalf, he would obviously not work with Harvey if Angelina objected.

.They will twist themselves into knots to defame Angelina before they’ll admit that Brad is at fault. The man is always the righteous truth teller, and the woman is usually a scheming whore.
Thank goodness these poor, hapless white men have TMZ looking out for them!

  7. Nina says:

Good for Angelina for speaking out. Don’t think anyone believes HW when he denies assault. Brad is such a spineless, insecure creature

  8. Marietta says:

Yeah tmz can f/o. What Harvey is saying is that of course he couldn’t control himself! No one can with her. She’s just too beautiful! Ick. My god she was 21. Of course I believe her.

  9. Sierra says:

Yeah, we are all going to believe an abuser’s and a convicted rapist’s words over Angelina 🙄

Brad is being cancelled everywhere over this because he cannot deflect it at all.

The fact is that he did work with Weinstein after Gwyneth incident even if people don’t believe Angelina.

  10. Aurora says:

I remember people mocking Jennifer Anniston as “bitter” for saying Brad was missing a “sensitivity chip” which turned out to be true.

Men who cheat on their wives typically aren’t the most empathetic people. Angelina was naive to think Brad would prioritize a woman’s well-being over his own desires considering how their relationship started.

  11. Gruey says:

What is there for brad to deny here? His wife is on record saying she experienced assault by Weinstein. Then Brad goes on to work with him on multiple occasions. The timeline speaks for itself and is completely damning.

  12. Bunny says:

This reminds me of something I heard once and found to be true.

“All women know a rape/assault survivor, but few men knows a rapist”.

In other words, men routinely overlook and discount horrible behaviour in other men.

Ugh to Brad’s crappy, excusing, enabling behaviour.

  13. Serena says:

Like anyone would believe that pos, and why is he still talking? He should at least have the decency to shut the he up.

As for Brad, that was a non-denial if I ever saw one, a really poor and pathetic attempt. How shameful.

  14. Ainsley7 says:

I get why Brad may have been all heroic with Gwen, but ignored Angelina. Weinstein harassed Gwen while she was Brad’s girlfriend. So, He believed that Gwen had a right to be upset. Plus she was his girlfriend aka his property. With Angelina he viewed the harassment as a settled thing that was now over. There was no reason not to work with him. Basically, he feels he gets to decide how traumatized his girlfriend/wife is and for how long because he knows better and they belong to him. He’s awful and doesn’t actually care about anything that doesn’t directly effect him.

    • Sunday says:

Exactly. I can totally see Brad’s “defense” of Gwen being more like “hey Harvey, hands off my girl, there are plenty of other hotties on set to choose from” as opposed to “hey Harvey, you’re a disgusting pig and abuser and you shouldn’t be allowed around women period.” Big difference.

      • Bleh says:

Or maybe he lied to Gwen.

      • Isa says:

Or maybe he knew about both, and stood up for Gwen because at the time he was in the role of being her hero, but when the time came while he was with Angelina, he was mad at her for some reason, and decided to use it as a punishment. Because that’s how abusers work.

  15. Lily P says:

Honestly such a damaging and repulsive statement from HW – exactly what my friend’s r*pist said as a defence in court. A woman being attractive is not a reason to violate them and it’s scary how common this line of reasoning is.

Brad can’t deny he worked with Weinstein so the only way to save face is to say the assault never happened and discredit Angelina. He literally relies on the PR man who covered up for HW.

    • Lucy2 says:

Excellent point. It’s very telling that he didn’t say “this never happened, I was a producer and would not abuse my power in that way“, but instead of saying “she was hot and should have expected people to hit on her.” He completely ignores the fact that it was a professional setting, and he was in a position of power to give her a job or not.

  16. Adorable says:

In reading the whole Interview this past weekend,it’s clear to me that she’s still somewhat trying to “Protecting”Brad(Maybe for the sake of the kids),cause you can just tell he violated her & the the kids trust but she is still Keeping quite for the most part..Can’t be easy…..Glad to see the “Golden boy”facade is slowing crumbling down😇.

  17. Andrew’s Nemesis says:

Well, he would say that, wouldn’t he? (H/T to Mandy Rice-Davies)

  18. Myra says:

Imagine being in jail for rape and issuing a statement denying you tried to assault someone else as if the world is supposed to take your word for it. What a gross statement, too. A person being pretty doesn’t mean that they deserve to be sexually harassed and assaulted by men.

  19. Michelle says:

Harvey still denies the rapes of the women he’s been convicted & sentenced for, and that was just the east coast, his LA court trial is yet to begin. He’s denying Angelina’s claim to get it out of the media and would be jurors minds. He doesn’t want a longer sentence, if convicted he’ll spend the rest of his life behind bars where he belongs.

  20. Barbie1 says:

The nerve of tmz asking for HW’s opinion in the first place. Giving him an outlet to spew more lies is sickening. Brad just ignored the killing them softly accusation in his statement. That says it all.

  21. Hell Nah! says:

Harvey Weinstein is a convicted rapist who terrorized, harrassed and assaulted an untold number of women for years operating in a system that provided him with a cloak of power to protect his disgusting, criminal acts. Thankfully, his (partial) payment finally came due and today he sits in jail, hopefully rotting from the inside out. Nothing he says now should surprise as per his conduct then.

Brad Pitt should have kept his mouth shut on this but I’m grateful for this sickening attempt to downplay and omit his involvement with a rapist pig that he well knew had gone after his former girlfriend (GP) and ex-wife (AJ). What a gross weasel you are, Brad Pitt. You knew who Weinstein was and you knew what he had done/been doing to women for YEARS – and you still made the choice to work with him.

For those in the back still stanning for this POS, open your eyes to his true colors. This statement is strobing neon.

  22. Mireille says:

Brad hired Weinstein’s PR to help with brand/image after his divorce and continue legal proceedings with Angelina. Brad is also producing a movie about Harvey and his crimes — even after working with him on IG and KTS. Brad is nothing more than an opportunist trying to solidify his Hollywood Golden Boy status, make movies, and win Oscars. He’s just one of a score of mediocre white men protecting each other in Hollywood.

And someone better fucking muzzle that asshole Harvey. His response to Angie’s interview makes me all rage-y. Don’t be so pretty and maybe men won’t assault you. Fuck off. One of the most horrifying stories that I’ve read about Harvey Weinstein is what he did to actress Lysette Anthony. He’s a predator – pure and simple. He hunted women.

Harvey Weinstein didn’t just assault his victims. He instituted a whole system of blackmail and intimidation to keep people silent, to discredit them if they spoke out, and to ruin their careers. He’s well connected, has millions in the bank, and has a vicious ego that will destroy anyone who got in the way of his power trip.

  23. Rapunzel says:

HW says this is for sales on Angie’s book? What book?

And his statement is typical abuser crap- she’s gorgeous, I was just showing appreciation, that’s not assault, you’d do the same.

    • MY3CENTS says:

I think this interview is to help promote a book she collaborated with ” know you rights” for children/teens coming out.

  24. Chelsea says:

This quote allegedly from a Pitt source is grade A gaslighting. Angelina’s quote specifically talks about a fight with Brad over Killing Them Softly not Inglorious Bastards. Brad didnt just star in Killing Them Softly; he produced it with his production company. It was his and his company’s job to find a distributor for the film and they CHOSE the Weinstein company to distribute it. There’s no way he can wiggle himself out of this; he’s literally listed as a producer on the movie’s imdb page.

But speaking of Inglorious Bastards; everyone knows that Tarantino ususally had his films distributed by the Weinstein company. When Brad took that role he knew there was a high probability he’d be working with Weinstein who went on to do a big Oscar campaign for him and that movie so I’m really questioning if he went after Weinstein when he was with Gwyneth because he thought that what he did was assault and wrong or if he was just jealous that another man would try to put his hands on his fiance.

    • Lucy2 says:

      All of this!
When someone says you did A, B, and C, and your response is “A wasn’t my fault!” and you don’t address the other two items, that’s pretty telling.

  25. Esmerelda says:

HW denial does not read like a denial: “she’s hot and it’s only natural, you know?” is not a convincing denial in any shape or form. Sounds more like a confirmation.
I have no more words about BP at this point. Just go away.

  26. Talie says:

I had wondered at the time why Angelina didn’t go into more detail for that NY Times piece that she and Gwyneth participated in. Now I think it’s because she maybe didn’t want to minimize Gwyn’s story since Brad played a part in both, but a much more heroic once in hers.

  27. February-Pisces says:

Brad needs to get in the damn bin. He’s disgusting, in fact I never understood why he was such a big deal. I know most of Hollywood turned a blind eye to what Harvey was doing, but to seek someone out who has assaulted your wife and ask them to work together it’s truly a sign of just how low his character really is. Brad should have avoided Harvey after he assaulted gwyneth.

And If Jen Anniston does any more ‘are they back together’ award season campaign gushing with this prick then she can get in the bin too.

  28. #facts says:

What Angelina verified about Pitts heroic act with Paltrow was pure acting and facade. Which is exactly who he is.
Weinsteins fixer is Brads so the responses coincide and is the most repulsive thing I’ve read in a while. She’s got so she should expect men and women to hit on her. Dead!

  29. teecee says:

I think these statements are very useful in illustrating that just because a man steps up once (Paltrow) doesn’t mean he won’t look the other way in a similar situation if it benefits him in some way (Jolie.) There’s no “grand gesture” of being an ally which indicates that someone will always be an ally.

  30. Cessily says:

I believe her also.. no excuses justify it.

  31. Zut Alors says:

It strikes me that it was around this time in 1998 and 1999 that Angelina developed a substance abuse problem. I wonder if the attempted assault on her person was a contributing factor.
As for that pos Pitt, the less said about him, the better.

  32. Ashton says:

The media and celebrities love Brad. They overlook everything he does and paint Angelina as evil. The best gift Brad ever got was being involved with Jennifer Aniston because she is beloved by old and now by new fans of Friends. People see their relationship as a fairytale and to this day want them back together. She is also beloved by most other celebrities. And she only talks glowingly about Brad which gives Brad the ultimate gift. Brad can’t be a bad guy, look how much they still love him. Brad will always be given a pass and Angelina will always be treated as the evil seductress. I believe her! I also believe something bad went down with Brad and the kids. That was her breaking point with him. Now it’s very possible Brad is different now. People do change but I’ve also seen how he publicly goes after the mother of his children, going as far as to make fun of her at awards shows. My problem has always been no one holds that man accountable for anything.

    • #facts says:

@Ashton yes Jen is beloved but don’t think Angelina is not loved or have celebrities as friends. In fact Angelina is more powerful than Aniston and Pitt. That narrative you just spewed is all public media perceptions.
Pitt isn’t made of Teflon like his fans think. His popularity has taken a hard hit.
His bought awards last season was just that.
He and Aniston spend a lot of money on preserving their pristine image. The world is changing and Angelina is polarizing which is attractive to old and new. She doesn’t pay PR and media to make her look like a good little princess or prince. People are a lot smarter now. He has fans but she does too. If Angie was such a hated woman by everyone she wouldn’t be relevant and yes she is painted as some villain but her life is much more broader.

  33. Maria says:

Why on earth a convicted rapist had the chance to make a statement on media mocking one of his victims? WHY

  34. Andrea1 says:

I saw a tweet o. Twitter and here it is:

“Brad Pitt actions :-He wants to reinstall his corrupt biased judge
He call the violator Harvey in the jale to defend him
He worked repeatedly with the abuser of his wife
He silenced his own kids in the court
He wanted to get out (without success) of the trial against MIR”

People are beginning to see through his golden boy image. Also people were tweeting about the fact that Brad dated two actresses will they were underaged and he was in his twenties and he hasn’t been called out for it

  35. Hmm says:

Next up the kids start talking louder. Pax is almost 18

  36. Jay says:

Ugh, if you find yourself on the same side as Weinstein on anything, or relying on him to back up your story, it should be a sign of how in the wrong you are.

And I always found that story about him “confronting” Harvey on Gwyneth’s behalf pretty gross, more like “Hey! Stop, this one’s taken!” not “Hey, stop, that’s wrong!”. As though preying on women is fine, so long as you don’t infringe on MY property. What a guy.

  37. Elo says:

She has JLM who she told and helped warn others that Harvey is a predator. how can you not love JLM? I would love to hear him supporting her.

As for Harvey I guess he’s using the excuse that she was hot and very open about her sexuality, something patriarchal and retrogade society condemns in women.

  38. Nichelle says:

Brad hiring Weinstein’s image guru says a lot. Especially when that same guy helped stop victims’ stories. Also Harvey’s statement is basically saying she should be used to it. It’s certainly not denial of an unwanted sexual advance. Whatever happened is just not assault to him.
That “is the whole world” question is icky.

  39. A.Key says:

Wow…. So her being attractive means it’s acceptable to make her feel uncomfortable and show her zero respect?? Wow….
Like even if he had made only a pass (and I don’t believe that), it would have still been inappropriate and abuse. But to think he feels entitled to make women uncomfortable in sexual terms just because he finds them attractive… Jesus, what a vile piece of trash.
