Ariana Grande insists her r.e.m. beauty line isn’t hopping ‘onto any bandwagons’

Ariana Grande covers the latest issue of Allure. Before I read the interview, I thought this was going to be purely about music, or maybe just a slice of her new life as a married woman. It’s not at all – there’s only an oblique reference to her husband, and it’s barely about new music. The bulk of the interview is about her new makeup/beauty line, r.e.m. beauty. Not R.E.M. the Southern rock band from Athens, Georgia (my fave, Michael Stipe, would never). No, the “r.e.m.” in question in a reference to REM sleep, as in Ariana is all about manifesting her dreams. Ari is also promoting her new gig on The Voice, and of course she’s got a bunch of other side-projects too. But the beauty line is the main thing. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

She’s been working on this for years: “Coveting the secret for the past two years and having testers and samplers in my purse, and people asking me, ‘Oh, I love your highlight, what are you wearing?’ And me being like, ‘I don’t know’, sweating. It was so hard to keep a secret for this long.”

How she’ll introduce her beauty line: In the manner of a streetwear brand, r.e.m. beauty itself will manifest in a series of “drops.” The first focuses primarily on the eyes — “our main gateways to our dreams, our emotions, our everything,” Grande explains. “They’re our main storytellers and sources of communication. I feel like you can emote more with your eyes than you can articulate sometimes.” To that end, there are fine-point eyeliner markers, liquid eye shadows in a range of matte shades, glittering toppers that sparkle like nebulae, and at least one mascara. There are also lipsticks that feel like butter and glosses that tingle upon application, calling to mind DuWop’s Lip Venom. “That was the reference! I feel like this is as tingly, if not tinglier than Lip Venom. I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, is this a little too intense?’”

Whether the beauty market is oversaturated right now: “That it’s crowded? I’ve thought a lot about this, of course, because I don’t want to just hop onto any bandwagons ever. I think that…I wear my peers’ makeup as well, just like I listen to their music. I’m not going to say, ‘Oh, there’s too many female artists.’ I love and I’m [a] huge fan of my peers that do both, and I think that it’s just another way to tell stories. Because you can never have enough makeup, just like you can never have enough music.”

It’s about her own pickiness when it comes to beauty products: “I always am very picky when it comes to that,” she says. The lip glosses are more like dewy lip stains, because Grande wanted something that would be long-wearing.

Her style inspo: “I’ve always sort of gravitated towards the ‘50s and ‘60s and ‘70s for glamour references. I’ve always pictured myself in a different time period. I’ve always wanted to wear that makeup, wear that hair, wear those outfits, be those performers.”

[From Allure]

I’ll be honest, I do think the beauty industry is currently oversaturated with celebrity-side-hustle beauty lines. Rihanna’s really got these women on her bandwagon! I mean, Rihanna wasn’t the first celebrity to do a makeup line, but I would argue that Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty changed the game in a huge way. Now every woman with any kind of profile wants their own beauty lines. So, yeah, it is oversaturated and hyper-consumerism too. That being said, I understand Ariana’s argument of “the industry is big enough for everyone.” She’s making it clear that she has her own point of view and her own idea about how certain products should be. And I’ll be damned if I’m not interested in her lip tingly product now.

I have to smile a little at her first focus on the eyes – yeah, windows to the soul and all that, but we’ve been on mask mandate for a year and a half – unless I’m on Zoom, all I can do is focus on the eyes. But I like that she has a definite point of view and I hope she’s successful with this venture.

I haven’t bought Allure since the pandemic, but I usually love the Best of Beauty issue. This one looks a mess. I hate grainy, fuzzy photography, I hate that the paper looks and feels like bleached-out newsprint and I hate, hate, hate how crowded the pages are, with the editorial content looking just like the ads.

  2. VS says:

she has a huge fanbase, they will buy whatever she sells…..to each their own
    All the best to her!

It’s very clear to me out of the celebrity makeup lines who has a distinct perspective and love of makeup. Rihanna had extremely innovative formulations, clear commitment to diversity from models chosen to colour range, and utilized her Bajan heritage for skin enhancing ingredients. She was/is a powerhouse.

I am happy Ariana has a line coming out as she has consistently referenced throwback eras in her makeup application (the dramatic winged eye) so I’m expecting a good eyeliner & mascara. However I’m not expecting it to be as exciting as Rihanna’s and that’s ok. Her fans have loved her perfume line for years so this is a natural extension of that work and fan base.

Thank goodness! Just what we needed! ANOTHER celeb makeup line!

    The market is SO oversaturated.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ psl, it truly is!!! And the last thing we need is another celebrity pushing their “own” creation onto the masses, without having to create something of substance as their base will buy it anyway! The fact that she developed a lip line to mimic DuWop is absolutely hitching her wagon onto another beauty line. No matter how much she talks, she is hitching her wagon to another line.

As for Rihanna, she created an incredibly diverse beauty line specifically for WOC to be included. Rihanna had the foresight to look into avenues that need representation and she nailed it!! I have never used Fenty since I never wear makeup anymore but I have read the reviews and everyone loves it!!! Rihanna did her homework and created a line that was not only inclusive but also extremely well formulated!!

Agree. I just saw some ads for Halsey doing makeup stuff now. Halsey? I mean, she doesn’t strike me as a glamorous person or someone known for her styling. Ariana makes more sense to be heading something like this.

  5. Plaidsheets says:

I’ll admit. A “dewy lip-stain” has me curious. The last thing I need right now is more makeup, however.

  6. Busyann says:

Aw. I’m happy for her. Arianna has definetly grown on me the past few years. The market IS oversaturated but she’s a woman trying to add more sources of income to her portfolio. Nothing wrong with that.

I’d be interested in purchasing some items if my face hadn’t rejected all makeup since wfm. Anyone else experiencing this or just me?

    • psl says:

I see it as greedy. When there are people who actually created products and have trouble selling because they aren’t famous, and then these celebs shill their crap.

      How much money is enough?

      • Busyann says:

People will buy what they want. If people want to support small business they will, or if they want to support a celebrity they will. Or they can do both. That doesn’t make the celebrity greedy. Maybe you just have an issue with her? I didn’t always like her especially with the whole donut licking incident. However, she has changed. There’s no denying that. I think it’s a combination of just getting older and most importantly Manchester. One day Ariana will no longer be famous, so she is doing what she can now to build her wealth. Good for her. A lot of people do things in their personal lives to build their wealth, not just celebrities. Good for anyone looking to increase their money sources, celebrity or not.

      • psl says:

No, I feel this way about all celeb lines. I could not care less about who it is.
People do not KNOW about the struggling companies because of the celebs taking away from them. That is my point.

      • Otaku fairy says:

Agreed, it’s just smart to plan for the future. Only a few of her fans are going to actually swear off all other makeup brands in favor of hers. Are most people actually only sticking to just one brand anyway? I use more than one, and most of my makeup wearing friends do too.

  7. Paige says:

The use the “big gun$” (plastic $urgery/glam $quads/per$onal trainer$) and sell the $100 lip gloss to us peasants??k.
F these petty sheisters. We’re not that gullible…are we???

    • ME says:

I mean Ariana refuses to even let her natural skin color shine through. When’s the last time any of us saw her without that fake tan? Also, yeah we all know she’s had work done as have so many. But in her case, she really got famous after she had the work done. She’s not like Kylie who was famous with her thin lips, had huge lips the next day, and then claimed it was just lip liner lol.

    • Meh says:

      Apparently some people are

  8. Michael says:

I think Arianna is looking to recoup some of the money she lost by not being able to tour and also build something for when she cannot tour as much (family maybe) I do not wear makeup as a guy so I am not one to speak on celebrity makeup lines but I do appreciate when one of them does something different like Kendall’s Tequila and Bella Hadid’s Kineuphooric line. That being said I am a fan of Arianna and wish her all the luck in the world

  9. MsIam says:

She’s been in the perfume game for years, so its not a stretch to branch out into makeup or skin care. After all Rihanna just came out with a fragrance. And its smart for celebrities to leverage their popularity while they can, its a fickle industry and you never know how long your career will last.

  10. ReginaGeorge says:

Not really a fan of this brownface wearing donut licker, nor of her mumbled, nasal singing, but I thought she was at least cute looking. However, I saw some commercials for her new stint on the Voice and she looks like she’s messing with her face. It looks tweaked. I mean she started early when she morphed into a different person since her Nickelodeon days, (look up her old pics) but she’s starting to look puffy and pulled now.

    • EduBois says:

      Word! Agreed!

      • BothSidesNow says:

Really?!?? I don’t follow her enough to notice, but DAMN!! Another one bites the dust….

      • Otaku fairy says:

@Bothsidesnow: It wasn’t the actual brownface. Like Donatella Versace, Jwoww, late aughts Lady Gaga, and countless other celebrities and reality stars over the years, she was tanning a lot. Normally that would just lead to commentary about how less is more. But the zillennial pop star has also used phrases that originated with AAVE. The theory on the internet is that there’s basically no way those 2 things can be a coincidence in any one person without there being a plot to pass them off as another race. Even though she’s always been honest about being Italian.
She has toned down the tanning since getting the criticism though. Which is the wisest choice in the long run, even if she wasn’t actually guilty of trying to Rachel Dolezal the world.

    • psl says:

These women are messing with their faces SO young. It will be interesting to see what they all look like at 40.

    • Jenn says:

She has PTSD from that mass shooting and I’m getting a little worried about how much Nose she’s removed lately. I think she’s trying to exert control in her life via cosmetic procedures.

  11. ellie says:

I love Ariana but if I wanted Lip Venom I could just buy Lip Venom?

Like what’s the point? (Well except making more money to already massively rich people.)

  12. Lucy2 says:

There must be so much money in the beauty market, all of these celebrities have beauty lines, perfume lines, etc. I don’t blame anyone for diversifying, but for sure it is oversaturated

  13. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

No bandwagons? Then call it the Dew Nutlick. And give everything a pastry name. Plenty of flavors.

  14. Dee Kay says:

I’m guessing between retail cosmetics and her joining The Voice, she is looking for ways to work more from LA. Maybe she and the new husband want to spend lots of time together, maybe they’re planning on a baby soon, maybe she saw how pandemic cuts off touring income, maybe all of those.
