Olivia Rodrigo wore vintage Versace to the VMAs: super-cute or meh?

2021 MTV Video Music Awards

The MTV Video Music Awards were held last night and they were more A-list than they’ve been in recent years. To be fair, the MTV Movie Awards have been pretty C-list for a while now, but the VMAs come and go, they’ll have one good year and then a trash year, and on and on. This was a good year, especially with Olivia Rodrigo and Lil Nas X performing in the front-loaded show. Olivia wore this vintage Versace (from the 2001 collection) on the red carpet. She performed “Good 4 U” on the show and won Song of The Year for “Driver’s License.”

Lil Nas X also wore Atelier Versace, an absolutely gorgeous lilac ensemble. He performed “Industry Baby” and part of “Montero” for the show. Personally, I thought he was the best? He won Video of the Year for “Montero.”

Normani wore a Patrycja Pagas vegan leather ensemble. Such a beautiful young woman with a great figure, but I’m not really sold on her style. I wish… this whole look had been different. Normani did “Wild Side” with Teyana Taylor.

Saweetie looked lovely in this vintage-y style bombshell dress. Seriously, I love this.

It always cracks me up to see young people dress like 50-somethings, and here we have Billie Eilish looking like she’s directing a local theater production of Cats. She won Video for Good for “Your Power.”

Rodrigo’s dress is lovely, a breath of fresh air after the Megan Fox thread. I like the others, too, except for Eilish, oof.

  2. Northerngirl says:

Your description on Billie Eilish style is spot on! XD

    • SKF says:

The Billie description made me laugh!!

Gosh, watching that footage of Olivia’s performance really freaked me out. Tightly packed people, inside, singing along. That’s a COVID Petri dish right there! Singing, screaming and cheering all supposedly lush more viral particles out more forcefully apparently. I was surprised that the audience didn’t have to wear masks? The dancers were wearing them. Did they have to have proof of a vaccine to get in?

      • ME says:

I found it odd that some folks in the crowd wore masks while others didn’t. You are right though, definitely doesn’t seem safe.

  3. SomeChick says:

oh here’s Billie. idk, I love it. probably because I would wear it!
seems rather like something Helena Bonham Carter would wear, but oversized.
might be improved by messier or gothy hair.

love love LOVE Lil Nas X. he looks amazing. bit of a Rick James vibe with the bangs.

the other versace… I can’t figure out if I like it or not. the colors are good together.

    • Sally says:

Lol, yeah, I immediately thought of Rick James too and please no, please don’t let this make a comeback! He looks great otherwise but that HAIR!

  4. Jo73c says:

I’d like to see Billie Eilish dressed by The Row maybe. She likes to be able to choose to be covered up, but I think MK&A could help her pull together a lewk.

  5. Ainsley7 says:

I’d really love Olivia’s dress if the sheer purple fabric was done better. It’s pretty around the top, but it bunches at the knees in an unappealing way. It’s also got a hole in it which probably happened on the way there or something and that sucks.

    • VIV says:

I think its made of difficult fabrics (I am not a fabric expert to know what they are!). It looks much better here than when I saw her sitting and it looked like the dress was strangling her on the top half. Seems uncomfortable.

  6. Louise177 says:

    2001 is vintage?

  7. Jeanine says:

I wish Normani would stop with the top not ponytail. It looks like it hurts and it can’t be healthy for her hair.

  8. Daphne says:

When is this soap spoolie eyebrow trend going to be over??? I like her. Congrats and the dress fits perfectly.

  9. FHMom says:

I love Olivia’s dress. She wears it beautifully. This is the look JLo should have gone for. Billie looks pretty and comfortable. Lil NasX is giving me Rick James, and I love it.

  10. Case says:

Olivia looked beautiful. I’m so happy for her for winning her first VMAs!

  11. Mimi says:

Billie is such a breath of fresh air. I’d wear what she’s wearing

  12. ME says:

Is it just me or do Gen Z’ers tend to dress more conservatively than the older generation of women celebs? Olivia and Billie both…compared to Meghan Fox, and well all the other women. It’s refreshing actually. This also reminds me of that one pic of J.Lo with her teen daughter. Her daughter was dressed like a grandma and J.Lo was dressed half naked. It’s like something is definitely different about this young generation and I don’t think it’s a bad thing.

  13. MsIam says:

I won’t say I like what Olivia is wearing but at least its a dress. I think a better job could have been done on the chiffon overlay. As for Billie Eilish it looks like she borrowed that outfit from Dianne Keaton.

  14. Amanda says:

I like it. It looks a little like my prom dress from 2005, except my dress had straps.

  15. Caroline says:

IDK what it is about dirty white boy rappers, but that Jack Harlow is HOT. He and Post Malone could get it. Ew, I know, but STILL.

    • ME says:

I wouldn’t put Jack Harlow in the “dirty” category. I recently watched him do an interview and I was so impressed with him. He is smart and very down to earth. Now I have a crush lol.

Beautiful dress on Olivia Rodrigo. I like Saweetie’ s look too.
