Grimes in Iris van Herpen at the Met Gala: the accessories make the look

There were a lot of women in Iris van Herpen at last night’s Met Gala. I know Iris’s work from past Met Galas, it’s very recognizable and brings art, architecture and fashion together in striking way For Iris’s gowns, this look seems familiar, but Grimes is the one to wear it. She very happily showed off her sword, which is made from recycled guns, to Ilana Glazer. She also carried a book-like accessory, which had accordion pages inside. Iris is a Dutch designer, but Grimes explained that her look was inspired by the book Dune, which was written by an American. She also said she’s Canadian and really wants a green card. I loved her matching mask and wish more celebrities would have done that.

Check out her hair and boots. This is wacky as hell and I love it. The mask does go with the Dune theme, but the elf ears not so much. Thankfully Elon Musk did not seem to be there with her, although I could be wrong.

Gabrielle Union was also in van Herpen, in this architectural gown that she said represented “change.” This took over 1,400 hours to make. The design is astonishing with scales that look like a combination of a lizard and a fish. I’m not sure how this fits the theme, but with a result like this I don’t care too much.

Met Gala in New York - Arrivals

Tessa Thompson has one of the less successful van Herpen looks. At one point she was wearing a cowboy hat that was so high on her head it looked Photoshopped on.

Hailee Steinfeld looked like some kind of snow fairy in van Herpen. She also looked completely different and I didn’t recognize her at first. I think it’s the eyebrows and blonde hair. She is a true chameleon.

Finally here’s Winnie Harlow in a van Herpen catsuit. I love the cape, which she used to dramatic effect.

Gabrielle Union is stunning to me so I think she looks good in anything. The dress is definitely different but I liked it. Also like Hailee’s dress, although with the hair there wasn’t much contrast but maybe that was the intended look?

    • Meg says:

Hailee seems to be having a lot of fun with her look
Remember when Taylor swift showed up, the night she danced with Tom Hiddleston, with bleach blonde hair? This feels like that, something sudden and fun for the night

  2. Becks1 says:

I loved Gabrielle’s dress. She looked stunning.

I didn’t “get” Grimes’ look…..I just really didn’t like it but it seems to be getting praise so maybe it was just over my head.

    • Keats says:

I think I like it because the Met Gala is the place to go OTT with your fashion, and she definitely did that. To me it feels like a good meld of designer and wearer.

  3. ArtHistorian says:

I love Iris van Herpen’s work and I’m so happy that her creations are beginning to show up on the red carpets.

    Is Grimes expecting again?

  5. TQ says:

I really enjoyed the van herpen looks this year. I particularly enjoyed Grimes’s and Tessa’s looks. Very fun stuff.

  6. runawaywriter says:

My apologies to Hailee, I thought she was Rita Ora.

The dress is lovely for a figure skater look – maybe that’s considered American? :D I’m honestly a bit confused on why she’s blonde here, surely her normal dark brunette colour would have been a lovely contrast?

Gabrielle’s look is stunning, absolutely a piece of art. I like that they at least tried to give it an explanation, which seems to be more than most, even if it’s a bit ‘high-schooler-writing-an-english-essay’.

Gabrielle Union!!!!!! My GOD, girl! She is the star of the whole damn ball.

  8. Aven Sharp says:

I am only commenting to say that I applaud Grimes making a mask a part of her outfit. Everyone else should have done that too. 25% of delta cases are breakthrough infections, they can’t be relying on vaccines and rapid tests alone.

    • Red Dog says:

Agree, it’s really strange to see all these naked faces!

But…can she even breathe through that thing?! Are there vents in the spaceship-y nose?!

  9. Renee says:

Gabrielle’s dress was and look were perfect. I felt like she really went for it. I know it didn’t necessarily seem on theme, but she looked great.

Hailey is unrecognizable….are we sure that is her?:)

  10. Anna says:

Grimes’ look is spectacular. I love it.

  11. Emma says:

Oh god grimes go away, that is not Dune and your bf is a Harkonnen.

  12. Kaykay says:

I actually liked Tessa Thompson’s outfit.

    • Yup, Me says:

Agreed and her big ass hat looked like it was made out of braids, which made me think she was referencing the little known history of Black cowboys in the US.

  13. Meg says:

So Rita ora was there with taika and Tessa was there as well.
Honestly wonder if they avoided arriving on the carpet around the same time?

  14. Stacy Dresden says:

Love Grimes, she looks awesome. I like Tessa’s look, too, she takes bold risks.

  15. JC says:

Absolutely adore Grimes look. It’s one of the best. LOVE HER!

  16. Savu says:

I dislike Grimes, but I think she was my best-dressed last night! Van Herpen is SO appropriate for her. Loved the mask too.

  17. JJ says:

Love to see so many Canadian women represent! Grimes is from a small town near my town so it’s cool to see her here & love her song for Hilda though I don’t know about all the other stuff.
Also fun to see so many women with pretty flat chests (like myself) rock these outfits…
