Met Gala co-chair Billie Eilish wore Oscar de la Renta & channeled Marilyn Monroe

Billie Eilish was one of the co-chairs of last night’s Met Gala, which meant that her whole look was kept under wraps until the very last minute. They didn’t want any photos of her arrival/walk to the gala, even. I sort of get it – it was a big look. Billie went full Marilyn Monroe and wore this very pale Oscar de la Renta ball gown. It was a big moment! And honestly, she really brought the drama and she seemed really happy with her look.

This is one of the most insane red carpet videos I’ve ever seen.

Rose Leslie & Kit Harington. She’s in Oscar de la Renta, he’s in YSL. De la Renta really did some “big looks” this year. I hate the idea of a redhead in yellow, but sometimes it really works. Rose pulls it off. Kit looks nice too. My one complaint: I don’t think her dress was fitted properly. It looks like a boob might pop out at any moment.

I wish this dress was a different color, it washes her out imo. But this is the best hair and makeup I’ve seen on Billie although the eyeliner is really extra.

How to make a teenager look like an 80 year old woman

      • MY3CENTS says:

I’m with you. This look is terrible, she’s a beautiful lively teen and this look aged her in a not good way.
Maybe if she went back to her green/black hair color it might have worked.

    • Kaykay says:

I agree, not a good color on her, the dress and the her. The dress blends with her skin, and not in a nice way, and the hair is clashing horribly with her face.

BUT, she is shining and it looks like she is loving it – wearing that thing, and I guess that’s all that matters. ;D

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

The heavy liner under the eyes is not good. This could have been great if she had stuck with winged liner and false lashes on top, left everything else nude-ish, with a red lip.

      • E.D says:

        Completely agree.
That heavy under eye liner really is awful and the lip colour and heavy blush is simply wrong.
Her makeup and hair really ruined the look IMO.

    • goofpuff says:

Yeah, I don’t like her look. The color and makeup, it just makes her like 30 years older and not in a good way. A few tweaks would have done wonders – a more modern Marilyn makeup with an interesting color choice that is complementary to her skin’s undertones. That would be made it really pop – instead she is kind of washed out.

  2. Snuffles says:

If she was channeling Marilyn, she got the eye makeup wrong.

    • Annaloo. says:

She mentioned in the Keke Palmer interview that she was channeling the “holiday Barbie”. Keke then told her she couldn’t afford Barbie as a kid, I thought it was hilarious.

I love the s look on her, beautiful throwback to old Hollywood glamour, definitely Marilyn heavy

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I wish I had scrolled a hair before posting above! I fully concur, and it was a MESS.

  3. Twin falls says:

Not a great color on Billie.

    • BeanieBean says:

I agree, something a little more vibrant to contrast with her pale skin & blonde hair. I loved when she was herself, though, smiling at her fans & waving. She reminds me of my nieces. So cute and so talented.

  4. humanhedgehog says:

I love the dress but something in the shades of her hair/dress/skin combo washes her out. Gorgeous dress though (I’d wear it was my wedding gown if I had crazy money!)

  5. josephine says:

Just had to say that many redheads look great in yellow! It’s one of my favorite colors to wear, although I have darker red hair and wear a darker shade of yellow. Her skin is very pale but not all redheads have such pale skin!!

    • terra says:

Yes! I love it when fellow redheads wear yellow as it’s one of my favorite colors.

I have sort of medium toned red hair and INCREDIBLY pale skin – like, if-I-stand-outside-in-the-sun-without-sunscreen-for-as-little-as-five-minutes-I-can-feel-my-skin-burning kind of pale – and love to wear yellow.

I’ve never really paid attention to what colors I “should” or “shouldn’t” wear according to other people. The only color I won’t wear is orange and that’s for personal, slightly traumatic reasons, not because I think it would look bad. My grandmother taught me from a young age that getting dressed is for yourself, not anyone else, and I try my best to remember that when I start to feel anxious, even if I don’t always succeed.

    • Ronaldinhio says:

The dress is too short in the bodice.
      The rest I don’t mind.

    • paranormalgirl says:

I’m straight up freckled ginger and I look great in a mustard yellow or a golden yellow. Nothing too pale though.

  6. Kate says:

I also read that Billie got ODLR to commit to stop using fur in exchange for agreeing to wear the dress. Pretty awesome!

  7. August Rain says:

How can you make a gorgeous 19 year old look 60 🤭? The hair looks like a wig, the make-up is wrong for her features, bringing them down. There is nothing of Marilyn in there. The colour of the gown is one my 80 year old mother would go for, and it washes her out completely. The fit of the gown makes her torso look like an afterthought, barely there. Her boobs look squished and her arms look stuck under the tule. The colour of the eyebrows is also off, and fighting the black eye-make up… How? Why? In what universe is this in line with Eillish’s persona (like the Vogue cover before). I suspect some high-powered music person is telling her “to embrace her sexiness, her inner vixen” and destroying the vision she has and represented so well of what sexy and empowered can mean for her generation, my kids’ generation. Lots of people this year actually brough innovative ways of showing skin and feeling themselves. It unnerves me to see a person who didn’t have to suffer through this 50s vision of women doing it “for fun” and I apologise for my rant.

    • Snuffles says:

Marylin was a personality as much as a look. Contrary to popular belief, she wasn’t dumb at all. Severely emotionally damaged, but not dumb. “Marilyn” was a persona that she could turn on and off. Billie didn’t capture any of that.

    • Veronika says:

Billie never said she was channeling MM, she said her look was inspired by the annual Holiday Barbie.

  8. Driver8 says:

I’m happy Billie has gone out of her comfort zone but I hate everything about this look.

    • Jenn says:

She looked so uncomfortable in it! I think the big skirt and gauze wrap were to give her a sense of security, to not feel overexposed? I don’t want to say anything bad about it, tbh, because she looked her best when she appeared confident

  9. Mei says:

It’s got drama which is cool but the dress colour washes her out so badly. And her hair and makeup are so heavy handed, the hair looks like a cheap hen-do wig :/

  10. Jan says:

Billie trying to look 50 and JLO trying for 18.

  11. Ainsley7 says:

I love this look, but would have loved it more if there had been more contrast. The blonde hair washes them out quite a bit. So, wearing a dress that is only slightly rosier than their skin tone doesn’t help. I honestly wish they’d ditch the blonde all together and go darker. they’d look great as a red head. I love that Billie is still doing what they want with their style though. People have tried hard to put them in a box. They have repeatedly said that they’re putting them in the wrong box and just continue to wear what they wanted. It’s nice to see.

    • florencia says:

Are you sure it’s accurate to use they/them for Billie? I did a google search and there does not seem to be any public declaration from Billie that this is the case…

    • Ainsley7 says:

I heard that she had. So, I googled it very very quickly and found some links that insinuated she had, but I should have looked more closely.

  12. LillyfromLillooet says:

I think Billie’s exploring a lot, and I love what she’s doing. I do not believe for a minute that she is succumbing to pressure.

I did want to ask, did she switch pronouns?

    • FHMom says:

This definitely seems like a theater kid being a theater kid. I’m not sure about the pronouns.

    • EEeeee says:

I haven’t seen/heard her say that she’s changed her pronouns.

      • LillyfromLillooet says:

Thanks–I had the impression that Billie went by “they.”

I just saw on People that Billie agreed to wear Oscar de la Renta if they stopped selling fur. To moi, she is not giving vibes of being controlled or ordered. This look was a fun experiment and in a certain light, it seems to me that if you are doing the Met Gala right, your look should be wonky at least or EPIC fail.

  13. runawaywriter says:

Billie’s look is a weird one for me – the cut is obviously gorgeous (the drape of that train on the stairs is dreamy!) but in most shots from the side you can see the awful shelf it’s made of her boobs…my own are wincing in sympathy. The draping of the top is thankfully hiding the worst of it. I would also love to see her hair in this style, but in a darker colour. I think the combo of her hair colour and dress colour are washing her out a bit.

I’m sometimes partial to a redhead in yellow, but the fit of Rose’s dress here is ruining it for me. It just seems a bit…sad for such a bright colour.

  14. ReginaGeorge says:

I’m a redhead who loves yellow. It’s all about the shade of yellow to your complexion. Though I’m not pale like Rose. I like more red/orang-yellows and not blue/green yellows like Rose is wearing. I don’t like that shade on her either. Something a bit more mustard would have looked stunning on Rose. Kit looks adorable.

I like Billie’s dress, just not on her. It just seems too overwhelming and too much for her to pull off. Perhaps someone taller like Charlize would have slayed in it.

  15. Size Does Matter says:

In Billie I see Glenda the good witch from the Wizard of Oz.

  16. AmelieOriginal says:

It’s so nice to see her out of her shapeless oversized clothing for once. I love the structure of the dress and think a deeper color on her would be gorgeous. The lighter color emphasizes just how pale she is.

  17. Athena says:

I thought she was going for Barbie and can totally see it. I liked her outfit and if the theme is Americana what is more American than Barbie.

  18. tlady drake says:

Billie’s look is great. Would have been magnificent with better posture, however as a fellow introvert with big breasts – I get it.

  19. Peet33 says:

In terms of Rose Leslies boobs she had a baby this year so she might still be breastfeeding? In which case your boobs will go up & down in size CONSTANTLY, I know mine do. So it doesn’t matter how ‘fitted’ the outfit is it, you are in danger of having something pop out anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️

  20. Renee says:

I’m not thrilled with Billie’s look as the color doesn’t do anything for her skin tone.

    Rose looks beautiful….as does Kit.

  21. Bettyrose says:

That’s how Kit and Rose view American fashion? It’s like a prom scene from a Gidget movie, so maybe they’re not wrong.

  22. DuchessL says:

I dont like the general billie ellish vibe. She seems out of character to me, or something forced on a artist to make her broaden her growing base. The Monroe take is definitely on theme, but i find it too easy and tacky. They’ve been mimicking marilyn forever that whenever I see another monroe inspired look, it feels like someone’s doing a cheap imitation or a tacky impersonation.

  23. SarahCS says:

How do all these top tier designers keep messing up strapless dresses????

I just hear the Fug Girls saying that it ‘needs a hoik’.

  24. L4frimaire says:

A lot of people thought these colors made her look washed out. The peach color is very retro and the dress is very voluminous and pretty. She looks like she’s enjoying herself and having fun with it all. That matronly hair style and brassy blonde color does not look good on her. Definitely a 50s debutant vibe coming from her.

  25. WithTheAmerican says:

I loved this. Her makeup was off to me, would have loved a Marilyn lip and eye in BE colors, but I am so here for this dress.

  26. Girl18 says:

I feel like everyone looked… bad at this year’s Met Gala and I couldn’t pin point why. I realized the beige carpet looks terrible against everyone’s outfits and washes people out. A red carpet would’ve looked better.

    • L4frimaire says:

That really a good point. There was a lack of energy or something and that carpet color was just gross.

  27. HeatherC says:

Billie’s dress needs a new color. She can do pale if she wants, I’m pale and wear pale colors as well when I feel like it, but I feel like for her dress to be successful on her, it should have been a cooler toned hue. I think an icy blue or light light lilac might have been a better choice

Poor Rose, she had a common problem like other outfits (looking at Taraji) in that the bodice of the outfit seems to deliberately squish and pull down on the boobs

  28. Giuliano says:

well done to Billie for taking a stand against fur
