Emma Corrin brought Crucible Realness to the Emmys: cute or funny?

The Crown’s Season 4 won a bunch of Emmys, no surprise. The only surprise was that Emma Corrin didn’t win for their portrayal of Princess Diana, which was arguably the biggest performance of the season. The season would have faltered in a huge way if Emma didn’t get it right. So I was sad for Corrin that they lost. I enjoyed Emma’s Emmy look though: Crucible Realness, Goody Proctor Goes to the Emmys. Emma wore a custom Miu Miu. The gloves had the fingertips cut out, and Emma got a black manicure to give themselves a “claw” look. The little bonnet though… it’s more like Swim Cap Realness.

As it turned out, Emma was the only major cast member to miss out on winning an Emmy. Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Tobias Menzies and Gillian Anderson all won Emmys for their performances as (respectively) QEII, Prince Charles, Prince Philip and Margaret Thatcher. The only other “loser” among the main cast was… Emerald Fennell, who played Camilla Parker-Bowles. So Camilla and Diana both lost. LOL.

Olivia wore this simple Roksanda sack dress. She broke down in tears when she won and spoke about how her father passed during the pandemic.

Gillian Anderson in Chloe. It’s weird that so many women actually had better styling for the “stay at home” pandemic awards shows. Gillian’s style has been struggling!

Emerald Fennell in Valentino. I kind of love this? It’s wacky and it suits her.

Josh O’Connor in Loewe. I love him, he’s an absolute doll. He’s quite the dandy too, he loves clothes.

Love any look that expands notions of gender and of beauty. This one is funny and funky.

    • Nina says:

Exactly! It’s not just standard boring fashion, this look is real art

    • Susan says:

Corrin has a sense of humor and I love it. Not a lot of up and comers would take such a risk. Kudos!

    • Isabella says:

I would’ve loved Emma’s look at the Met Gala, in relationship to this year’s theme. Hey, American dressing. Here, it needed explanation. But it’s cool that she took a giant risk.

    • L4frimaire says:

She looks great! She pulls it off and it’s very cool.

  2. Monica says:

Oh, Olivia. WTF is up with that Halloween dress.

    • terra says:

I love it on her. It suits her and is one of the better choices she’s made on the red carpet. The embellished acrylic block heel sandals are great too. She maybe could have gone a bit bolder with the jewelry, the earrings especially. Perhaps a statement bracelet would have been a nice addition?

All in all, it’s a solid effort for Coleman, who usually gets it so wrong.

    • tealily says:

It reminds me of my graduation gown.

  3. MY3CENTS says:

I love Gillian Anderson , but does her dress double as a dream catcher?

    • Seraphina says:

      Hilarious, TY!

    • Killfanora says:

Love, love love Gillian Anderson’s attire!

      • bros says:

I also really like her dress for some reason. it shouldnt work and it does. she looks like a Taos goddess.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Gillian looks very late 60s/early 70s boho style. It suits her.

Stick a couple of triangles of fabric on Emma’s cap, and they could have a Cat Costume for Halloween 😊

I’m not loving Emerald’s dress. Maybe without the flounce on the sleeve? A straight 3/4 sleeve, or sleeveless might look better?

As for Olivia, I love the woman, and this IS her style, but she has a good figure. Something other than a sack dress with a cape would look great on her. But her grin is infectious 😊

      • JanetDR says:

        I love Gillian’s look!
I adore Olivia and wish I could go shopping with her.
Josh looks adorable. He’s so charismatic!

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ JanetDR, I agree with you. Yes, this is Olivia representing Olivia is all of her glory. She is not one to stray from her true self, no matter how she looks.

Josh looks absolutely stunning and is perfectly coiffed. As for Gillian, I can’t get into her dress but if she loved it, then who am I to say anything.

  4. Scal says:

It was 1 am in London when the emmys started so I’ll cut the London group some slack. Considering they were up all night. Corwins swim cap was dumb though.

The crown is overrated as a show.

    • Driver8 says:

The Crown is not a good show and I’m afraid it will continue to win awards and beat out better shows and actors as long as it’s on.

    • Yup, Me says:

And Emma’s gloves looked like the gloves they give you at the nail salon to protect your skin when yoi get a gel manicure.

    • August Rain says:

Yes!!! So overrated. And Ill-advised focus on terrible-people-who-suffer-because-imprisoned-in-wealth-and-god-given-superiority as acceptable. It is sugar-coated falsely edgy melodrama about the most uninteresting an un-woke people ever.
Next we’ll have a series about the suffering of Melania Trump. And before someone says it’s badly compared: politeness and old money can hide rotten values much better.

      • Case says:

I actually think the show does an excellent job of making them human, but not necessarily sympathetic. I’ve never thought the writing was on the side of the Royals, and that’s why I like it. They show examples all the time of what bad people they are.

      • Anners says:

@Case – I agree! I feel like the Crown humanized the Queen for me, but I still feel her decisions (well, all of their decisions, honestly) are selfish and self interested and almost always the exact opposite of what a true leader should choose. The monarchy is so steeped in tradition and ceremony that it blinds them all to reality. The past couple of seasons made me feel sympathetically for Charles while simultaneously thinking him a pompous git. I think that’s why I like it – soapy, awful, wealthy people behaving badly. I’m waiting for Karma and her flaming sword to arrive!

    • lucy2 says:

I think it is overrated as well. I know people who LOVE it, but I find it kind of slow and boring, and I usually wander off during the episodes. I’m like 3 seasons behind too, because I don’t feel the urge to keep up.

Also, I don’t like any of these dresses, and I really hate Emma’s look. Maybe it’s considered fashion forward or something, but I don’t like it at all. None of it.

  5. Lizzie says:

Looked like she was wearing a swim cap.

  6. Sofia says:

I only like Olivia’s out of the bunch. And I also think Corrin should have gotten the award over Colman. I don’t think Olivia Colman is a bad actress at all, but I found Emma to be better in the show.

    • Ann says:

I agree. I like Coleman a lot but her Elizabeth was not nearly as good as Claire Foy’s, IMO. She was comfortable in the role but never seemed to challenge herself at all in it, if that makes sense. No Wow moments at all. I thought Emma was a more engaging addition to the new cast and was much more interested in watching her.

That said, I don’t like the swim cap either. Emma pushes the fashion envelope, which is great, but there are going to be hits and misses and this is a miss.

    • Nic919 says:

I think after the early years there really isn’t much for anyone playing Elizabeth to do. Claire Foy got to use the whole “getting used to be Queen” thing and had better material, and more of a focus. By the time Colman shows up, she’s barely given anything to work with and the focus turns to Charles and Diana. Emma Corrin should have won though because their Diana was a main focus this season and the interactions with Josh O’Connor as Charles were great. Colman was an after though this season.

But I figured the Crown would win all the acting awards when I learned that Claire Foy won an Emmy for guest actress and she was in one episode for a few minutes.

I also think they gave the Queen’s Gambit Emmys because some of them thought it dealt with royals too

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

That reminds me of when Judi Dench won for “Shakespeare in Love” and she had a total of 12(!!) min. of screen time. Not that the Dame isn’t great in pretty much everything she does, but c’mon!

  7. Ines says:

Emma’s fingertips look so sore…red around the nails, painful! The outfit is awesome to me though, I love it.

  8. Case says:

Emma Corrin looks straight out of American Horror Story.

Loved Josh’s look and really glad he won. He’s great and seems like a sweet guy.

  9. Murphy says:

How could Tobias Menzies win and not Emma Corrin? That’s disgraceful. He was a freakin robot with weird make-up.

    • Nic919 says:

Basically there was no one else in that category from the Crown so that’s why Menzies won. (To be fair he has done good work especially in other shows but he wasn’t in this season that much) Corrin and Colman were in the same category and I suspect many voters just went for Colman because she is the more familiar name. Not all voters actually watch the shows.

  10. Malificent says:

I played Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible in high school, and I’m pretty sure that was the cap that I wore. I wish I could have worn those nails though. No wandering eye for John Proctor when Goody Proctor could do some damage with those claws….

  11. Normades says:

I only watched the Crown this season for Emma’s Diana scenes. I mostly fast forwarded everything else. Olivia’s scenes as the queen was boring and I thought Gillian’s Thacher was too over the top.

    • L4Frimaire says:

Agree. Apart from Corrin’s scenes, it was kind of boring. Emma should have gotten an Emmy. I stan hard for Handmaid’s Tale and they should have won a lot of awards. Was such a great season and incredible performances! I find Coleman a bit self conscious, almost parody and accent coaching. All this Crown/Diana stuff is getting a bit much and sucks up too much oxygen.

  12. Sof says:

I love Emma’s look! Swim cap and all, it’s something different.

  13. Meee says:

I tell everyone only watch the first 2 seasons of The Crown for Claire Foy and Matt, and actually the supporting cast was good. The last 2 seasons are a hard no from me. I don’t understand why they keep winning awards

  14. Kristen says:

Emma’s look would’ve been appropriate for the MET Gala last week, but this is too much costume for the Emmy’s.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ Kristen, yes!!! It would have been the perfect choice for the Met, not the Emmys.

I have never watched the Crown as I was an adult during that period, which I still remember very clearly. It was a very sad period for Diana and I don’t wish to revisit that awful period of her life. I will become too depressed. I try to stick with comedies as I have enough turmoil and sadness in my life right now. I recently lost my favorite sister to stage 4 pancreatic cancer, so I need joy and humor. The last year has been awful.

  15. Isabella says:

I wish Emerald had worn her hair down. The pinned back look didn’t go with her flowy gown. I love her, though.

  16. Reece says:

    You thought The Crucible.
    I thought Pan’s Labyrinth.

  17. schmootc says:

i was disappointed to see that Gillian Anderson won. I think she’s great, but her Thatcher was definitely not. So weird. I’ve watched film of Thatcher herself, so I know she spoke and behaved a little oddly, but I think Gillian took it way beyond that.

  18. Stef says:

Emma looks ridiculous! Dumbest outfit I’ve seen in a while. What on earth would make someone wear that and think they looked good? They did get robbed of the Emmy though, they deserved it.

  19. eliza james says:

The anorexia displayed by Amber and Anya is startling. I am not shaming, just having a reaction to these painfully thin women who look genuinely sick. I feel for them. I do not condemn them.

  20. Youre_a_towel says:

Funny. And she knew it looked funny.

100% looked like a 1950s synchronised swimming costume.
