Cecily Strong in Elie Saab at the Emmys: flattering or way too much?

Um, did everyone know that Cecily Strong had this amazing figure? I didn’t. Cecily was nominated for SNL, and she wore this very sexy Elie Saab with a high slit and a deep V. It was clingy and I would guess that there was some tape involved, but wow, she looked amazing. I love how Elie Saab gowns make women feel so good about themselves.

Ellen Pompeo, also in Elie Saab. This is her style – she often goes for these very severe, covered-up looks. I mean, if you’re going to do a high-necked, covered-up pantsuit, this one is pretty good. The shoulder detail sucks though.

Keri Russell in Zuhair Murad, with her husband Matthew Rhys. Keri wasn’t nominated, she showed up as a presenter. So I think she wanted to go big and fun, which is what this Murad dress was – not an “important” look, but a fun party dress.

Aidy Bryant in Simone Rocha. On one side, I think this is probably what she chose for herself, and this is HER style. On the other side, I hate that so many fashion designers don’t know what the hell to do with women above a size 8. In any case, I wish she hadn’t worn a muddy green with red accents. She looks like a sad Christmas ornament dipped in mud.

I love Simone Rocha! I think Aidy looks great in it… and it’s not about the designer not knowing how to dress women above a size 8, this is exactly the Simone aesthetic.

    • Ninks says:

Great look for her but wrong event I think. It’s a bit too casual for the Emmys

      • terra says:

@Iris, I love Simone Rocha too and wish more people would wear her on the red carpet.

. . . I also agree with @Ninks – this is way too casual for a red carpet, especially a big one like the Emmys.

Aidy’s little red headband is fantastic and I want it for myself. Her red beaded mini bucket bag is cute, too, but also perhaps not quite right for a major red carpet.

      • lucy2 says:

I agree – Aidy seems to trend towards cute rather than glam, and this fits that bill perfectly, but for the Emmy’s I think it could be glammed up a bit. I love her so much though, very happy to see her getting more attention.

I love Cecily Strong’s dress. She really does have an amazing figure and the dress looks great on her. She was fantastic in Schmigadoon if anyone needs another Apple series to watch lol.

Aidy’s dress would be a lot better IMO if the color was different.

    I love Keri’s dress! That’s a fun look.

  3. Eurydice says:

I don’t know, there’s something not right about the fit of Cecily’s dress – like it’s the wrong size or the torso is too long. I have that problem with a petite waist length and misses sizes. If I grab the shoulder seams and pull up, then the armholes and waistline fall into place.

    Ellen is very TRON’s Anatomy.

I didn’t care for it. I’d’ve chosen one: DEEEEEEP V, or HIIIIIIGH slit. Or maybe if it wasn’t black…(a jewel tone instead, perhaps)? Or the V quite so wide/spread out? It just didn’t look “right” to me; maybe that twisted fabric at the waist?

She’s tall with a fabulous figure; she could wear anything!

I thought Aidy looked like a mess. The color, the headband, the arm flounces, the braiding, poofy sleeves with elastic… just, no.

    • josephine says:

I agree – the knot/crossover part is too low and is pulling down the dress. It looks like it’s the wrong size. It could have been a knock-out, but it feels like she’s wearing someone else’s dress.

    • terra says:

It’s like it’s spreading her out instead of just letting her – fantastic! – body be what it is. The cut is all wrong.

Asymmetry is an angles game and they’ve lost this round.

  4. Genevieve says:

Do Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys always look that grim, are they just having a bad day, or is something going on?

    • Diamond Rottweiler says:

I wanna say Botox though he still has his “11s.” But there’s some weird tweaking going on.

      • sally says:

@Genevieve I don’t know, they looked normal in other pics. People sometimes forget that the flashlights at these photo spots are insane, I’ve stood there a few times and was half-blinded. If you’re not used to it or out of practice like they maybe are, it’s very easy to look grim or a deer in the headlights.
And I don’t think he had Botox. But that’s a lot of make-up he’s wearing.

  5. FC says:

Aidy looks cute! Just not appropriate for the occasion. I like her style and can see her wearing this as a day look. She needed something fancier for the Emmys.

  6. Seraphina says:

Love Keri’s dress. She looked great. And I agree with the anyone above a size 8 comment.

  7. jo73c says:

No, Aidy Bryant, no! You deserve better than this.

  8. lucy2 says:

Cecily looks gorgeous, but I wish the neckline weren’t quite so plunging or open. But wow, she looks great. I like her a lot.

Keri’s would normally be a bit much for me (it’s trending into “JLo would wear this!” territory) yet I…kind of like it on her?

  9. Ariel says:

JLo announced tits out august- and ladies followed suit.
    Cecily looked amazing.

  10. K says:

Aidy is lovely and deserved a better dress. If she picked that out ok whatever. But this could have gone so differently.

  11. Meee says:

Whoever dresses Melissa McCarthy does a fabulous job. If this is Aidy’s look, then so be it. But that green and red was a Christmas look I couldn’t get behind

  12. iconoclast59 says:

I like Cecily’s look. Her hair looks fantastic.

I like Ellen’s pantsuit, but I don’t like her hair severely pulled back like that; she doesn’t have very attractive ears, and that hairstyle does her head no favors.

Keri’s dress is fine; her red carpet style has always been a little “out there.”

Lastly, Aidy’s dress would be fine on a teen or 20-something, but it’s a little too twee for a 34-year-old, especially at an event like this.
