Jean Smart wore Ralph Lauren & got a standing ovation at the 2021 Emmys

Jean Smart is a goddess, a queen and an icon. She’s been working steadily for something like forty years, it’s crazy. When Smart won her Emmy last night for Hacks, she got a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd. She also gave a shout-out to her Mare of Easttown fam, and basically everyone in that room has worked with Jean Smart or wants to work with her at some point. Jean wore this simple Ralph Lauren gown and her son was her date. She spoke about losing her husband Richard Gilliland this year too. *sobbing*

Mindy Kaling in Carolina Herrera. This is cute and okay! I actually think it’s one of her better looks?

Hannah Einbinder in Prada. One of several pink princess dresses on the Emmy carpet, and few of them suited their wearer’s coloring. She changed into a tuxedo for the HBO after-party though!

Not a bow fan generally, but this one adds interest to Mindy’s dress. I think it would have been boring without it? Jean looks iconic. Glad she won.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Not loving the bow at ALL. Maybe if it was half the size? Also, I prefer Mindy in jewel tones that show off her skin to perfection. She looks AMAZING in emerald, scarlet, royal blue… just my opinion ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 😊

I like Hannah’s dress shape, though I’m not a “pink” person myself. At least it wasn’t so pale as to compete with her skin tone and wash her out completely (my biggest “complaint” about ATJ’s “banana” colored dress).

Jean Smart… nothing left to say. Perfection. And I LOVE the fact that she hasn’t felt the need to be lifted, shaken, and snipped to the nth degree. She looks gorgeous.

      • Krista says:

I agree about the colour. Black seems a bit…phoned in nowadays. The dress really has to have a KAPOW look to pull off black for me. Of course, I’m a toddler when it comes to colours – the brighter the better!

  2. Lizzie says:

Jean Smart wore that dress every bit as well as the model, she looked fabulous. Mindy’s dress is beautiful, as is Mindy.

  3. PeacefulParsley says:

None of the actresses in that category should feel bad about “losing” to Jean Smart. She is a rock star.

  4. Sid says:

I didn’t watch the Emmys so I am very happy to hear she got such a beautiful reaction from the audience. I’ve loved her work all the way back to her “Charlene” days.

I came here to say the same thing!

    • lucy2 says:

Me too! When I was a teenager we went to a taping of Designing Women, I’ve been a fan since then.
I love her dress, she looks fantastic, and I’m glad she won.

Mindy is beautiful and I love her styling, but the big bow is too much for me.

  5. Seraphina says:

What a gorgeous dress on Jean. She is awesome!

Has anyone watched Hacks? I feel like HBO did no advertising for it. It’s hilarious!!

    • Twin falls says:

I watched it only because I’d just finished Mere and someone online mentioned Hacks to get your Jean Smart fix. I don’t remember HBO advertising it much.

LOVE that she got a standing ovation.

      • BothSidesNow says:

I have loved Jean Smart from her Designing Women days. I love the her show Hack and I am so happy that she walking onto the stage with a standing ovation as she stepped up!! She deserved it as she is such an icon and a such a wonderful actor. I don’t think she has ever performed poorly in any show/movie she has been cast in. Jean Smart is an icon!! And she deserved to win last night!

She also looked fabulous as well!!

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

I love Hacks!! Can’t wait for season 2! It didn’t get much promotion at ALL; I found it by “accident”, and watched because I love JS.

Hopefully Jean’s win will rectify this and it’ll get all the attention it deserves!

Hannah should have gone with the tux to the Emmys – it looks so much cuter and fresher than the pink dress.

    • North of Boston says:

At least the Prada dress was tailored probably to fit her, and flowed, hung like a professionally made couture dress should, with no wonky stitching or hem lines.

The color was beautiful, and might have worked better on her if hair wasn’t pulled back, or her makeup wasn’t so delicate, or even if she’d had a necklace so there would be some color, even a subtle change in tone/contrast somewhere. Or it may be a look that looks fine in person but doesn’t translate to the camera.

    • Anne Call says:

Right before Hacks came out, I listened to Laraine Newman (original SNL cast member) memoir on Audible and fun fact Hannah is her daughter. Great and interesting memoir.

  8. Ariel says:

I watched her in Hacks and in Mare- and she was fantastic in both.
    Hacks is a spectacular show.

  9. olliesmom says:

I’ve been watching Designing Women on the Rewind channel every night and I had forgotten what a good and funny show it was. But I only like the original cast. It went downhill after Delta Burke left and they tried to fill her spot with Julia Duffy and Jan Hooks.

  10. K says:

Jean is amazing. Just real love from me to her. I love professionals.

  11. Gina says:

    Stanning dress! She looks fabulous!

I’m so happy Jean won, and she looked great. However, I found Bowen Yang’s intro thoroughly annoying in that it pulled attention away from the nominees and onto him. Also, I found it a wee bit cringeworthy, because it seemed to play into the stereotype of the mincing gay man, which was really weaponized back in the day. As a straight woman, I’m not especially tuned into the LBGTQ zeitgeist, so maybe it was supposed to be more of an “I’m out and proud, and I’ll darn well mince if I want to” vibe…?? I’d appreciate any other takes from CBers.
