Florida Man Tom Brady thinks it’s ‘sad’ that he wasn’t allowed to speak his mind

Tom Brady covered a recent issue of WSJ. Magazine. The editorial is shockingly good! Tom had some strange years where his hair was a wreck and there was something weird going on with his face, like he’d suddenly lost too much weight or something. But now he looks so much better. Weirdly, being in Florida has given him a new lease on life. He seems happier, he seems more motivated, he even seems friendlier and warmer. That’s what this WSJ. Magazine interview is about too: Florida Man Tom Brady is at peace with himself and his life. Some highlights:

On the move to Florida: “I feel like I’m just coming back to life in a certain way.”

On turning 44: “When you’re going to be 44, you feel liberated to say, ‘All right…I feel differently.’”

How he cares less about what people think: “I think that’s probably how it’s going. You think people care what you think, and then you care less what people think, and then you realize no one cared, anyway.”

On retirement: “I don’t want to be out there and suck. You think I want to go out there and look like I’m 44 years old? I want to look like I’m in my prime. I feel like I’m living two lives. My football life and then my post-football life.” Toggling between both, he admits, is tiring.

On Gisele Bündchen’s personal style: “She’s pretty good. She’s obviously got incredible taste. In the end, I think she’s very much a hippie. She’d just prefer to wear, like, a simple little dress in 80-degree weather and, you know, just chill out.”

On being a person: People of all kinds “are looking for wins professionally. They’re looking for wins personally. They’re looking at how to parent in a challenging life, how to have a healthy marriage based on professional responsibilities…. I relate to everybody that way. To think that I don’t is ridiculous. The reality is that I’m very human.”

On owning a boat: “I literally said, ‘I’ll never own a boat in my life. Never. Who likes boats?’ ” Brady tells me. Now he sees a side benefit of nautical life: enforced family time. “No one can go anywhere. They’re captive. I almost want to put my kids on the boat like, ‘You’re hanging with us—that’s how it’s going to go.’”

How he was a “company man” with the Patriots: “When you’re an employee of a company…you kind of take on the voice of what that company is,” Brady explains. I get it. Still, I tell Brady that what he said on The Shop—the line about “90 percent of what I say is probably not what I’m thinking”—made me a little sad. “It is a little sad. It’s a little sad because it’s…a challenging thing to do, you know? What you say and what you believe might be two different things. But part of it is: You’re in a team. When you’re in a team, it is not necessarily always what you think. It is kind of what ‘we’ think…. I’ve been a little bit trained to say, you know, this is what ‘we’ think.”

Seriously, how long will he play? “Beyond that, I don’t know. Maybe it’s another year after that; maybe it’s two. I’ll have to see where I’m at with my family. That’s probably the overriding factor—what I’m missing out on.”

[From WSJ. Magazine]

I guess Tom is trying to say that when he was with the Patriots, he felt he needed to cozy up to Republicans because Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick were/are such big Republicans and Trump supporters. But now that he’s in Florida, he feels free to vibe with Joe Biden (as he did a few months ago). If that’s the way he felt in Boston, then I understand a little bit better about why he chose not to say much of anything when people (myself included) were calling him a MAGA douche. I mean, he still could have handled that better, but I get it. Also: the part about boats was cute.

    What mind?

I swear that when I think about his skull I can almost see the void.

    • EnormousCoat says:

Right? To me he looks like he was just unfrozen from a block of ice and his only thought would be “Ooooogggg”. But if he isn’t a MAGA dipsh*t, that’s a good thing. But yeah, he was/is friends with Trump. Who the f**k is friends with Donald Trump?

    • Paige says:

I cant help but visualize the bolts in his neck…

  2. PeacefulParsley says:

If Brady, a professional white male athlete worth hundreds of millions personally and billions over the course of his career, feels like he can’t speak up, we are truly fccked as a nation.

Imagine if *he* took a knee.

    • North of Boston says:

      That’s it right there.
      He *could have* spoken up.

He *chose* not to, because it wasn’t worth it to him. It’s not like he would lose his home or his children or his life by speaking up. And it’s not like he was at any personal risk if he didn’t speak up.

He was a white male tall professional athlete making millions… he’s pretty much near the top of the privilege heap in the US but he didn’t want to waste one iota of his personal capital to do what was right or speak out against egregious dangerous bigoted facists. Instead he just decided to go along to get along. That’s a choice many people make. But he and they don’t get to then say that they were taking the high road in their heart.

All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. Congrats Tom, you did nothing.

Enjoy the rings and the boat.

Everyone has a price to put aside their beliefs.
Even Brady. And we may never know is beliefs because he never speaks to anything directly. He plays gently to the majority while never alienating the minority no matter where he is.

He’s also arguably the most powerful NFL player there is. He’s the NFL Lebron James. If he felt strongly enough to speak up he would. I’ll argue his silence on some issues is his answer on where he stands.

On Giselle and her style. How basic and empty of a thought. She likes simple and breathable clothing in hot and sunny weather?

    • Lucy2 says:

If he’d taken a knee, it would have changed the entire tone of the NFL, and freed everyone else to do the same, right down to the guys who will never get endorsements and fame.
Considering he is the top of the heap of the most privileged people out there, it would have been nice.

there are really 2 types of people. We can see them in our offices everyday. The ones who do their jobs and say nothing about nothing because they dont care enough, they dont want to create waves and the ones who are move air and keep questioning why stuff is being done in such an unefficient way and wanna change things for the better. Tom is in the 1st category. My sister in law is in that category. I can’t stand the indifference, the lack of purpose, the lack of oupmf, the lack of determination, the lack of fight. It must be hard to do so little and to say so often “it is what is it”. I have heart palpitations, just thinking about it.

  3. Lurker25 says:

Edit: sorry I went on embarrassingly about his looks. Deleted because I calmed down.

    • Blubb says:

I have not seen the post, but I love that you did that. Realizing that you got caught up in your own venting, deciding it was actually not really necessary for the negativity to stay up for others to read and just deleting/correcting the message. We should all be more like that, online and in real life.

  4. Tiffany says:

All this time I thought he wasn’t speaking his mind is because he is a complete and total moron and has no mind.

And it took him moving to FLORIDA to be more free. Someone ain’t watching the news there. Sure Lurch.

  5. ME says:

Oh poor straight, able-bodied, rich, White man. If anyone is “allowed” to speak their mind, it’s people like you ! You know the ones society was made for and is controlled by ? Maybe times are changing and men like him don’t like it. Good !

  6. fluffy_bunny says:

I agree with Tom. I’m not owning a boat. Unfortunate for my husband because he’s from a boating family and he’d love to have a boat. My family had a boat growing up and my experiences weren’t as pleasant as his.

  7. ItReallyIsYouNotMe says:

I came here all ready to go nuts on the Florida Man title because WE DON’T CLAIM ALL THESE MAGA IDIOTS WHO MOVE HERE FROM OTHER STATES! Glad to see that the title was tongue-in-cheek. 😅 In all seriousness, while I am glad he is saying that that he doesn’t agree with the Patriots’ politics we won’t see any change if powerful and privileged people don’t take personal risks to effect that change.

  8. MC2 says:

He sucked on the teat of white, male supremacy- now he’s weaning & sad? Okay.

  9. HeyJude says:

OMG This guy had a MAGA hat in his personal locker stall he brought in to the stadium himself, has been friends with Trump for years and golfs with him, and is so close to him Trump wanted him to marry Ivanka.

This rehabbing his image stuff you’re trying to do here is not a good look for a progressive site. And completely undermines all the things you claim to support as far as equality and race issues.

    I’m disappointed in you.

  10. Aud says:

I don’t think he was forced to cozy up to Republicans (what?). It was more general, the Patriots asked him to stick to their script rather than offering his opinions during press conferences. Like no players spoke out much about Aaron Hernandez because the team asked them to stay quiet to avoid attracting headlines. I’m sure some guys wanted to say more but it would have created a larger media circus so they did what was best for the team. And Brady stayed quiet despite obviously disagreeing with some team decisions.

    • Theia says:

People keep saying Kraft is a Republican, but he actually supports a number of Democrats. There was a list a few years ago of who all the NFL owners donate to politically, and Kraft was the number one donor to Democrats of all the owners.

      • Aud says:

Yupp. I’m normally on the same page as the authors here but the coverage of Brady/Kraft tends to be very uninformed in my experience. If I recall correctly, Belichick is the only one of the 3 who actually supported Trump as a politician. Kraft donates to democrats and Brady does not get involved with either party or politics in general.

  11. Karelli says:

Lol at Gisele personality; doing f*ck all in a dress under the sun 😂

  12. MangoAngelesque says:

Yeah, no. What’s next, are there going to be features on people like Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Kellyanne Conway, giving them understanding pats on the proverbial shoulders for how they were pressured into spouting the party line by their bigger-boy higher-ups, so they went along with it, but didn’t *really* believe in it?

    No.

Tom Brady carried his little MAGA hat around, posed for his little Trumpy photos, and never once took a stand (or a knee) for anything that could potentially affect his bank account. And that’s not even touching on his deflating ball maneuvers. He’s a POS, and shouldn’t be given space for kudos anywhere that says it’s a site for progressive-minded folks.

  13. Dee says:

He took a hefty PPP loan for his company and then bought a 2 million dollar boat. Am I supposed to sympathize?
