The ‘Scream’ reboot trailer is here, but it’s really just the fifth film in the franchise

I always thought that Neve Campbell and I were the same age, but no, she’s five years older than me. It’s only now, right at this moment, that I realize that I had that belief because she played a high schooler in Scream when I was a teenager. I remember being in college and the VHS copy of Scream got worn out – we f–king loved that movie, the first one. The second one is kind of dumb, but then the franchise felt really fresh with the third film, where everything is in LA. That might even be my favorite Patrick Dempsey performance? Years after Scream 4 came out, I finally watched it on, like, Showtime or something. The story was actually pretty good, but I just dislike Emma Roberts and I think she’s a sh-tty actress.

Scream 4 came out in 2011 and I’m not sure if people believed that it would be the final chapter. It felt like Neve was probably done with the franchise, but then again, maybe she was always open to a good script. And ten years after the fourth film, it appears as though the right story came along. This is not being called Scream 5, although it does have the core group of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers and David Arquette’s Dewey Riley. It’s just being called Scream, and people are referring to it as a “reboot.” I would guess that one of the younger actresses will be playing the new generation’s “survivor of a horrific mass murder.” And perhaps this is the formal send-off for the troika of Gen-Xers.

So, yeah – they’ve released some production stills and now the first trailer is out. After 25 years, I really do feel differently about seeing these kinds of slasher films, and there are some moments of this trailer which are downright chilling:

Wasn’t it the case that Gale Weathers and Dewey were never supposed to survive this long? I remember not caring that much about Dewey especially in the first two films, but at this point, if anything happens to Dewey, I’ll riot. Gale makes more sense – she’s got that same survivor extinct like Sidney. They’re the only two people in the whole franchise making good decisions. Anyhoodle, yes, this looks good. I’ll probably watch it!

I adore neve campbell, will never understand why she was never a huge star- she’s gorgeous, can act, unless she maybe just stepped away for a while.

I could barely make it through that preview, not sure I’m going to make it through the whole movie, lol. I have seen the first three Screams but never saw Scream 4. The first Scream is one of the best scary movies ever in my opinion, but I don’t watch all of them.

It’s October and that means my husband is trying to push scary movies on me but I am not the biggest fan. We did watch the first Fear Street movie though. One of the things that I liked about Scream was it called out the ridiculousness of some of that genre – like I think Halloween and Friday the 13th are terrifying, but also stupid lol.

  3. Noki says:

I am assuming this one is probably the last the three main big actors are going to participate in (but never say never hello Jamie Lee Curtis ) so i feel they really need to kill one of them off I doubt it would be Sydney my money is on Dewey.

This came out right after I finished college, so I was a full adult. I still remember sitting in the theater and about 10 minutes in saying to my friend that I made a mistake and wanted to leave. I was terrified. I stayed and I’m glad I did because the first one is a great movie, but it was so much scarier than I thought it would be.

  5. Maria says:

Wow, Neve Campbell has only gotten more gorgeous.

  6. Georgie says:

I remember when Sydney tried to dial 911 over the internet in the first movie and how that was such a new concept to me! The part in the new movie where the app is locking and unlocking the doors feels like a nod to that.

One of my fav things about the first one in particular was it’s callbacks to various other franchises. I imagine this installment will be referencing itself a lot, as this franchise is now well established. So meta LOL.

I’m a big horror fan but was always “meh” on slashers (other than the original Halloween, which I love). They seemed so silly to me. But as I’ve acquainted myself with different subgenres over the years, I’ve really started having fun with slashers and I’ve come to appreciate them for what they are — they are silly at times, and that’s part of the fun of them! So I’m looking forward to this.

  8. Bettyrose says:

The original Scream is a masterpiece. It’s a genuinely scary horror spoof, that challenges the tropes of the genre without being a dumb parody. I’m not sure I ever saw 4. And I’ll have to rewatch 2 & 3 to remember them. But I’ll definitely watch 5. Poor Sydney.

    • Sigmund says:

Exactly! I don’t even like horror or slasher films, and I Iove the original Scream. It’s the right balance of self-aware, campy, and genuinely scary. None of the sequels have ever topped it.

  9. DC Gal says:

I am totally here for this, please take my money now. Scream was brilliant, always loved 3 the most of the ones that follow.

It is sooooooo distracting in the trailer whatever Courtney Cox has done to her face. Yikes : (

  10. Jenny says:

    Jack Quaid looks like Pacey!

  11. Aud says:

The only horror movies I’ll watch. They have a certain charm, it’s not all about the killing.

    Will definitely watch this.

  12. smcollins says:

I’m so here for this! I loved all 4 of the Scream movies (the original, of course, being my favorite) and by the looks of this trailer I’m going to love this one, too. I also love how they’re not releasing it for Halloween (smart not to compete with the new JLC Halloween), allowing it stand apart. Can’t wait!

  13. Darcy P says:

My son told me about this reboot yesterday and I have to admit I was just “meh”, but this trailer looks good! I’m not sure if I’ll see it in theaters, because I”m a wimp and a half and need to hide behind my hands half the time, but am definitely looking forward to it.

If Dewey or Sydney gets killed, I will riot though…

P.S. Thank you for the comment about Emma Roberts! I have never liked her, she always just vaguely bugs me, and I can’t ever figure out why, but whenever she’s in something, my annoyance for her just detracts from the actual story. Glad I’m not the only one.

    • Kat says:

Emma Roberts bugs me because she’s a mediocre actress who benefited from significant nepotism, and goodness knows our society has enough of those.

I love Scream as a franchise, the original is my favorite. Can’t wait to see 5, love that it seems darker and more serious than the last 2. #TeamDewey! If he dies, we riot!

  14. Itteh Bitteh says:

1 is the best. 2 is ok. 3 is my least favorite. 4 is my second favorite. I’m living for this trailer, can’t wait.

  15. susiecue says:

They missed a real opportunity to call it 5cream

I’ll probably watch this. I grew up on Scream
