Hailee Steinfeld: If I don’t get 8 hours of sleep, you won’t get a ‘good version’ of me

Hailee Steinfeld is currently promoting the third and final season of AppleTV’s Dickinson (where she plays Emily Dickinson) and Disney+’s Hawkeye series, which I kind of forgot was happening for much of this year. Remember, WandaVision and Loki were the proverbial canaries in the coal mines for Marvel’s attempt at limited series programming, and they thought Hawkeye would bring up the rear and put a bow on it. Part of Hailee’s Cosmo interview is about those projects, but she’s also talking about her music career, sleep habits and her (lack of a) love life. Some highlights:

She needs sleep: “There are people I’ve worked with who I love and admire who have that mindset like, “I don’t need breaks; I love what I do,” and you believe them, right? There’s part of me that wants to be “all work, no sleep.” But listen, I need eight hours. If I don’t get that, you’re not gonna get the good version of me.

What she wants in a partner: “I want a partner who is, first and foremost, loyal and honest but confident in themselves and able to do their thing while I do mine. It’s weird talking about it because it’s been in my head for so long. A lot of this music is also about taking control and taking ownership of one’s self. But I also think there’s power in claiming what you want, and maybe what you want is not to be alone.

She needs her friends to chill out while she’s single: “I am very focused on myself and couldn’t be happier about it. I have moments where I’m like, “All my friends are engaged, married, dating.” What a wonderful thing that seems like, right? I really don’t ever have moments of, Oh god, I feel so single, but it is funny how in the past year or so, a lot of people have gotten engaged or married. I’m like, “Everybody’s gotta slow down for me, okay?”

Her Sagittarius qualities: “My spontaneity, which has come through a lot more in the past few years. Maybe because my life has been so routine for so long that I’ve gotten to a point now where I can drive, go places, do things on my own as my own person. And not that I couldn’t before, but now, if I can do something, I’m gonna do it and I’m not gonna overthink it.

Ah, she’s a Sagittarius. The archer! That’s all I’ve got. I don’t know how to be spontaneous and that’s probably a Virgo trait. Hailee is permanently 15 years old in my head so it’s still shocking to see her look and act like a woman in her mid-20s who has her act together, who has friends who are old enough to get engaged and married. As for the sleep thing… people who get eight solid hours of sleep every night are completely foreign to me! I’ve never been like that in my entire life. Now, if I don’t get at least five or six hours of sleep, I’m a total mess.

I had zero expectations for Hawkeye as I couldn’t think of a more boring character in the MCU. But wow — I LOVED it. I thought it was the most coherent, fully-realized, and satisfying MCU show from start to finish (adored WandaVision but felt like it was definitely inconsistent at times). Hawkeye had a clear story, tied in some really cool elements from other MCU stories, broadened the world-building, had deaf representation, and really made me reconsider Hawkeye the person’s importance as an Avenger with no superpowers. And Hailee’s character Kate completely lit up the screen. I liked her so much in it that I’ve started watching Dickinson, and I’m really enjoying it.

I enjoyed Hawkeye. It was good holiday/Marvel/ NY based series.

    • Cee says:

ITA! I loved it and she is awesone.

    • Eleonora says:

Hawkeye was great and a lot of fun.
Loved Yelena; she made me laugh.

I can’t wait until Ms Marvel will come out, so you can see it all. Of you want to know why I’m.so excited check her comic.

    • E.D says:

Surprisingly to me, I enjoyed Hawkeye more than both WandaVision and Loki!
Really hope there are more seasons.

I love Hailee. She is so grounded, and mature, and just a good person. Such a rarity in Hollywood. I wish her nothing but the best.

  3. Brubs says:

I really like her, she is a very good actress, very charming and captivating

  4. EviesMom says:

I hope more people get on the bandwagon of prioritizing rest in this new year. We’ve all been hanging on for dear life and plowing through (or being expected to plow through) like nothing is happening, and we’re TIRED. Let’s all sleep this year!

  6. Kate S says:

@Tealily. 100% agree with you. We all need to focus this year on rest and self-care. Look out for #1.

I’m a Sagittarius (11/29) and am not spontaneous at all. Very much a planner, even in my younger years. I actually thought Sagittarius folks were more planners. I guess it depends who you ask.

    • Lena says:

I’m a Sag and I would say I’m a long term planner but short term I’m spontaneous if that makes any sense?

    • J says:

I’m a 29th baby too! I’m a planner and very organised but I’ve only developed that in adulthood, partly as a way to alleviate anxiety. I was a very spontaneous and carefree child/teen. Not sure where she went!

  7. Rapunzel says:

Who gets 8hrs. sleep regularly? Like, for real. Who are these people?

    • Lipreng says:

      I do.

      • Mina_Esq says:

I do. Between my job and the fam, I think I’d die of exhaustion if I didn’t. I can go 2 to 3 days without the full 8 before I crash and have to catch up on it. I look for ways to get that extra hour or two on the daily. It’s why I haven’t seen a lot of the shows that have come out, like Hawkeye.

    • Nene's Wig says:

I do. Who are these people who get less than 8 hrs? How hard is it to go to sleep at a reasonable time?

    • J says:

I do. I prioritise sleep and going to bed on time because it’s supposed to be the best thing for your health, and otherwise I can’t function. But also I don’t have children.

  8. canichangemyname says:

Gemini here and I used to be able to run on like, almost ZERO sleep. It wasn’t until I hit about 42 that I was like, “Nope. Noooope. If you want a nice and capable me, you have to give me my eight hours of sleep.” It really happened pretty quickly lol

    • E.D says:

      Hello, are you me?

This is exactly what I found happened to me.

Same star sign, same age where I just hit the wall and suddenly found that I had to sleep a minimum of 8 hours just to function like a normal human.

I’m 53 now and due to menopause, I don’t sleep for more than 1.5 – 2 hours in a row without a hot flash waking me up but I still try and lay in my bed for 8-9 hours minimum if I can or the results are disastrous.

  9. Serena says:

Wait that was Dickinson final season? Kinda sad about it, I was really loving where it went the last episodes.

  10. Pinkosaurus says:

The woman who plays Echo/Maya in Hawkeye is a deaf amputee who grew up on a very very poor reservation as a tribal member Wisconsin. I am so amazed at where she ended up given those challenges. We are starting to hear more about how too many indigenous women go missing, are abused or murdered and are not valued. I am so happy to see such strong representation on a major series from a gorgeous woman who has faced many challenges in her life.

    • BlinkB says:

She was wonderful in it! Seeing someone like her on screen means a lot to under represented groups, and she carried herself really well against more experienced actors. Can’t wait to see more of her in the MCU

  11. Normades says:

She really seems to have her sh$t together. With her success and standards it’s probably hard to find a guy her age that’s worthy.
