Tina Fey in Harper’s Bazaar: people who use Botox look like candles

tinafey1

Tina Fey is the November cover girl for Harper’s Bazaar, and the cover shot is… interesting. It’s not that Tina doesn’t look pretty, but I just don’t get the “surprised” look on her face. Maybe she’s trying to show us she doesn’t use Botox? Perhaps. Tina’s a lovely woman, and I’m not really sure if this cover does her justice. The rest of the photos are pretty good though – any of them would have made a prettier cover (see slideshow here). The interview is great too. Tina, obviously, has a gift for one-liners and great, concise comments on pretty much any subject. Here are some of the greatest hits from the interview (complete interview here):

Tina on her daily routine: “Work, come home, play, kid bounce, work again, go to bed.”

On her insanely busy schedule: “Sometimes I’ll be telling my husband [composer Jeff Richmond], ‘I think I’m cracking up. Sometimes you just need a minute to say, ‘I think I’m cracking’ and just acknowledge it. Last weekend, she started chanting, ‘Daddy is my mom! Daddy is my mom!'”

On playing Sarah Palin: “I feel like I’ve probably not worn that wig for the last time. At some point, it will come out of the closet.”

On her new hobby, shopping: “I’ve been shopping. I am no longer the least stylish woman in the room.”

On relating to her 30 Rock alter-ego Liz Lemon: “I wanted her to be believable, and she’s based on a version of myself from before. Being a writer and first moving to New York … a lot of women live like that. It’s not that there is anything wrong with them or they are not together, intelligent, attractive women. It’s just that the numbers are off or something.”

On Botox: “You can point any kind of laser at my face, but I don’t think Botox is for me. I think it is bad. People who have too much, they look like their faces are full of candles — a shiny, shiny face. Yes, festive. A holiday candle.”

On being vain: “I have the camera frame me from the waist up. Sometimes. If there is a shot that is bad, I can take it out. That is why L.A. is so bad, because they can take your picture from any side. That is why people in L.A. maintain 360 degree fitness. I don’t have that kind of time.”

On her now-trademark glasses: “I don’t wear them very much in real life because I need them to see only far away. And I don’t wear them when I am dressed up, because then I would look like Tootsie. It is funny because some of the grandma, old Dynasty-style lighting tricks that I’d like to be able to do are problematic with glasses. You see the lighting instruments. You may see Lemon start taking her glasses off more and more frequently as the season goes on so it becomes Barbara Walters.”

On working out: “I like to delude myself that I’m in the old-Hollywood mode. I just tailor my clothes well and try to keep my skin clear. While it would be great to work out an hour a day, there is something inherently sort of selfish about it. I can’t do it.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

My favorite part is when she talks about the old tricks some shows or programs use to make the older ladies look good. Some shows really did stuff like Vaseline on the camera lens, or either very, very soft lighting or too-bright “everything gets blown out” lighting. That’s what The View does – those ladies are practically glowing they’re so blown out. Man, I can’t wait for 30 Rock’s premiere. According to NBC’s 30 Rock website, it’s going to be next Thursday at 9:30 Eastern. Cannot. Wait. Lemon!

That hair color on her looks amazing in that second picture.

  2. Sigh. says:

I agree with you on the cover.
The second pic you have here or the one where she is in black are MUCH better.

The cover pic looks like a forced/one “say cheese” too many smile (when you push up your eyebrows hoping that will pull up the corners of your mouth).

    Refreshing that she’s not over-glammed, though…

  3. Ron says:

It reminds me Of Lucille Ball. She was a pretty woman they always wanted to “look funny”.

  5. lrm says:

actually, the cover photo make me laugh when i saw it-like it reminded me of how funny she is-so it was one of those tina fey is a goofball covers…to me-and it worked. First thing,I laughed out loud, kinda of like ‘hmmm…wonder what she’s up to?’ more than generica pretty girl photo with photoshop-where i may not have even known it was her….

  6. penny says:

    they airbrushed out her scar..

  7. Praise St. Angie! says:

I think her scar is on the other side of her face.

  8. CB Rawks says:

She’s not surprised, she’s raising one eyebrow, like she just shared a secret with ya.
    Love her. 😀

  9. Ash says:

scar IS on the other side.

  10. Shari Brock says:

Absolutely stunning pictures! That blue dress is so sexy and sophisticated, they seriously should have used that one as the cover pic. Kinda does look a little surprised, but she may have been going for a fun type look and just really didn’t hit the bar. Still, picture does a good job reflecting her funny nature!

I love the blue dress pic, she looks great. The cover shot isn’t bad, just different for a magazine like that.
I love Tina. I think she’s so funny and talented, and I admire what she’s made of herself and her career, and that she still seems very real and down to earth. Can’t wait for 30 Rock to start.

  12. Popcorny says:

    I love this woman.
She’s so dead-on about the waxy botox thing.
Look at those pics of Angelina Jolie (in white w/Syrian refugees and Brad) (Hint-she’d be the one who looks like a Madame Trousseau’s escapee).
You could flash an SOS off her face.
    Sickly.

  13. Lway says:

Tina is awesome. Smart, funny, pretty 🙂

  14. Merridith says:

man is she fugly, not a face for magazine covers for sure. Where are her lips????
    Nothing pretty about that face.

  15. Ally says:

    Merridith, jealous much?

First of all, the great thing about Tina Fey is that she’s a woman who’s achieved success for something other than looks. That’s worth celebrating and it’s worth any number of covers. She’s a talented comedienne and a great writer. Besides that, she is as pretty as any celebrity that gets a cover (as we know from the paps, they all look pretty much like anyone else without make-up, hair people, and gowns), as if “pretty” even matters when she has it going in on more substantial ways. Moreover, she’ll still have it going on when most of the other cover girls have had to resort to full-on Botox candle mode because their looks is almost all they’ve got.

  16. Merridith says:

No, not jealous of that ugly twat at all. And by the by jealous much is about the lamest internet comment ever.
