Boris Johnson apologizes for throwing at least 16 boozy parties during lockdown

For two months, Boris Johnson’s government has been on the ropes after a series of horrible revelations about Tory parties during lockdown. As in, actual parties, with booze and food and socializing, all while Boris Johnson was telling the British people to avoid family gatherings and pubs and in-person socializing. At the start of the scandal, it was believed that people around the prime minister had thrown a few small parties in December 2020 (arguably one of the heights of the pandemic). Two months later, we now know that BoJo and his Tory cronies were partying nonstop in 2020 and 2021, even before there were widespread vaccinations. Well, BoJo “apologized” for everything:

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday apologized after it was revealed that a string of parties were held in his Downing Street offices at the height of the country’s COVID-19 lockdowns — a controversy that has engulfed his premiership in recent weeks.

“Firstly, I want to say: sorry. Sorry for the things we simply did not get right and sorry for the way that this matter has been handled,” Johnson, 57, told a raucous British Parliament, following the publication of an internal report by civil servant Sue Gray showing that 16 separate gatherings took place in 10 Downing Street while the U.K. population was under lockdown — including one event held inside Johnson’s private apartment.

The much-anticipated report, which was curtailed by a separate Scotland Yard investigation into eight of the gatherings, blamed a “failure of leadership” for the parties in Downing Street, which include two events held on the eve of Prince Philip’s funeral. At the time, the U.K. was officially in a period of national mourning while the Queen and the royal family were preparing to lay the Duke of Edinburgh to rest at Windsor Castle.

“At least some of the gatherings in question represent a serious failure to observe not just the high standards expected of those working at the heart of government but also of the standards expected of the entire British population,” Gray stated in her report, also published Monday. “Some of the events should not have been allowed to take place. Other events should not have been allowed to develop as they did.”

In his statement to Parliament on Monday, Johnson acknowledged that the culture of Downing Street had to change in light of the Gray report, stating, “I get it and I will fix it.”

“It is no use saying that this or that was within the rules,” he said. “It is no use saying that people were working hard. This pandemic was hard for everyone. We asked people across this country to make the most extraordinary sacrifices, not to meet loved ones, not to visit relatives before they died, and I understand the anger that people feel.”

[From People]

Also included in the report: details of a May 20, 2020 party where Downing Street staffers were told to “bring your own booze” and then they got completely sloshed… at work!! Scotland Yard is investigating eight of the known parties because they rise to the level of criminal behavior and a flagrant abuse of Covid regulations, many of which were set by the Johnson government.

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer is calling on BoJo to resign, and Starmer called Boris “a man without shame.” YA THINK? Members of the Tory Party are looking to jump ship from the SS BoJo too – Theresa May removed the dagger from her back and slipped it into Boris’s stomach on live television yesterday, noting: “What the Gray report does show is that No 10 Downing Street was not observing the regulations they had imposed on members of the public. So either my right honourable friend had not read the rules or didn’t understand what they meant and others around him, or they didn’t think the rules applied to Number 10. Which was it?” Buuuurn.

I’m from an African country so used to seeing a certain level of corruption so seeing all of this unfold in the UK is quite amusing (not really). The UK has lost all credibility on the world stage.

    • Jane says:

Watching the session in parliament yesterday was excruciating. BoJo is scum, his Tory enablers are scum, Kier Starmer (Labour) and Ian Blackford (SNP) were brilliant, even Theresa May (Conservative) and a handful of other Tories stepped up, but it made absolutely no difference. And now BoJo will use the Russia/Ukraine situation to deflect attention from all of this, the Met (increasingly obviously corrupt) will bury the investigation, and the actual Sue Gray report will be kicked into the long grass. We’ll be stuck with this government for another two years at least, and god knows what further damage they’ll do in the meantime.

  2. Sid says:

These people are vile. There were COVID patients that died alone because hospital staff and family members followed the rules, meanwhile this clown and his circus crew were boozing it up at parties. Trash.

  3. heygingersnaps says:

No words can say how disgusted and how I incredibly loath johnson and his ilk! The sycophants around him continue to protect him and cover his ass. They forget that they serve the public and not the man (debatable, really) currently installed there!
We have rising energy prices, the likes that I have never seen before, just for example our energy’s fixed tariff is ending and we are faced with double the unit rates for gas, electricity and standing charges, which translates to either a £50 per month increase (from £118 a month in direct debit, it will be £170) if we go on a variable or £155 per month increase (from £118 to £273 per month) if we go on the “cheapest” fixed rate.
Food and fuel prices are also on along with other services and taxes but this government would happily write off billions of fraud from the covid loans than address the cost of living crisis amongst other things.

I’m not British, but if I was, and I followed the strict pandemic rules set out by my government, I would be SO ANGRY in this situation. That he flouted the rules so blatantly and so frequently just makes me mad. People gave up a lot to try to keep one another safe. This is a gross lack of care for the people he’s supposed to be serving. Poor leadership.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ heygingersnaps, I have been reading the constant struggle that Brits, like yourself, have been struggling with for months, only to be met with additional struggles still to be faced as the months progress. The rising prices of unattainable goods that are desperately needed everyday. On top of long lines for petrol with actual fist fights taking place in the need of it as well. With BoJo offering little to no recourse for help. Boris no longer fit to serve as PM, flouting the rules in addition to lying to everyone, on multiple occasions as well. BoJo’s should immediately RESIGN!

The statement regarding May taking a shiv to BoJo is a beauty to behold!! It’s time for Boris the Terrible to resign and he has lost his privilege to serve as PM.

    • pottymouth pup says:

Additionally, there are issues with a segment of the population pitching a fit about these regulations so when the government that enacted those regulations is refused to adhere to them, it reinforces the beliefs of those people and further encourages the spread of disinformation by them

  5. sunny says:

Oh my god, I cannot because that line about May taking the knife out of her back to shiv Boris is perfect! His government has been involved in so many scandals before this because they are only focused on their own needs, how much they can get, and they give no shits about rules or hypocrisy,

I cannot believe the sheer amount of parties they threw. Just wild.

    • FHMom says:

I gasped when I read 16 parties. The man has no conscience and is only sorry since he got caught.

  6. Roserose says:

It’s unbelievable that he hasn’t resigned. Shameless.

Aside: This whole thing has exposed a simple truth that the British drinking culture is hugely problematic. These are the kids who started getting paralytic drunk in their teens, got worse throughout their uni years and have now taken this culture right into No 10. Shameful.

  7. SarahCS says:

I was called on Sunday by a polling person who wanted to ask questions about my views on the different parties, leaders, policies, etc. Locally and nationally. I REALLY enjoyed giving my answers although there wasn’t a choice beyond ‘strongly disagree’ which was a shame.

  8. Fifee says:

The really alarming and depressing thing about this is that there are still swathes of voters that will happily keep these thieves & crooks in government because “boris got brexit done” and this literally makes me feel nauseous. Then Ian Blackford is banished from the chamber for speaking the truth, speaks volumes about the state of Westminster. It’s time to update the rules and regulations so MPs can call out these damned hypocrites & liars.

  9. Ocho says:

Keep in mind that the leaks seem to be coming from inside their own political party (the Conservatives). The video of former cabinet member Matt Hancock and his mistress making out at work was leaked by a far right member of the Conservatives who wanted to remove/lessen lockdown restrictions. (Hancock made out with his girlfriend/mistress/colleague at work during the height of the pandemic and subsequently had to quit in disgrace.) Then came the email leak: one of Boris Johnson’s aides emailed 100 staff members to a party at Downing Street on the same day a cabinet minister told the public they could only meet one other person outside in an outdoor public place, standing 2 metres apart. Also probably leaked from the inside. The very day Boris was up against the possibility of getting heaved out of office by his fellow Conservatives he very transparently removed lockdown restrictions: the Conservative anti-lockdowners backed down and Boris stayed in office. It isn’t so much that the Conservatives are supporting Boris as much as he is their puppet (at least the puppet of a very distinct anti-lockdown group). Labour leadership is not strong at all or they would have been able to use the past few months to gain their own footing.

    • Prairiegirl says:

This is interesting. I’ve wondered why the Tory caucus has been slow to move on him. I mean, they ousted Theresa May, Margaret Thatcher, and Winston Frickin’ Churchill and yet they’re keeping a buffoon like BoJo around… 🤔

      • BritDebbie says:

@Prairiegirl it has also been widely reported and backed up by the MP that defected to Labour that BJ has unofficial whips that are threatening his own MPs that if they cause any problems then their constituency that they represent will mysteriously loose investment. The MP that defected to Labour said that the reason why he voted against providing the poorest children with food over the school holidays was because if he didn’t the funding for a new school in his area would disappear. Conservative MPs were also threaten with stories appearing in newspapers as well.

  10. Stacy Dresden says:

    God he’s revolting

  11. Chaine says:

Horrible man, not surprised, he has always struck me as Trump Lite. I have to say I love the way that the British parliament all squish in together and jeer at one another.

    • Tessa says:

Me too! I listened to snippets and it was so satisfying to hear them shout at him live. What a shameless, shameless man. I generally loathe it when people bring up Meghan in unrelated context and I’m not even a huge Meghan fan, BUT imagine if it was revealed that Meghan and Harry had so much as 1 boozy party on the even of Philip’s funeral? They’d be torn to shreds. And he’s a Tory? aren’t they supposed to be huge royalists? Goes to show how they are really just selfish a**eholes and “royalism” is just a convenient cover that gets a lot of their constituents to vote for them.

  12. Desdemona says:

He always looks drunk or high (sorry to the british people)!!

    • Anna says:

Cause he is. It’s well known he’s a raven acholic and the supposed ”covid” illness was really him drinking too much and passing out…

    • elle says:

He does! He looks like the personification of “16 Boozy Parties.”

  13. CC says:

Oops, I did it again –
    I held a rager at No. 10.
    Oh, Britain, Britain
Oops, I’m not some regular guv,
    This law I’m aboooove
    I’m not that innocent.

  14. jferber says:

Elle, yes. That should be his new name: 16 Boozy Parties, PM.

  15. jferber says:

Could a buzz cut be part of his punishment, or could he walk into Parliament with a shaved head to show remorse (fake) or to solicit pity? I don’t care how/why it’s done, but please get rid of that horrible hair somehow! It’s got on my last nerve.
