Jessica Chastain wore Gucci for the Oscar nominees luncheon: cute or awful?

The annual Oscar nominees luncheon happened yesterday, Monday. I always enjoy photos and stories from the luncheon – while the media is there, the whole atmosphere is reportedly very relaxed, just the year’s Oscar nominees coming together to have a nice meal, to chat with one another, to take photos together and celebrate each other. Usually, the luncheon is very well-attended and it’s one of the highlights of the awards season. A lot of the “favorites” came out for this year’s lunch. Favorites like Jessica Chastain, who is likely the safe choice for Best Actress this year. She wore a Gucci dress which isn’t great, but hopefully she’s getting all of the bad fashion out of her system so she can really wow us on Oscar night.

Also: the reason why Chastain hasn’t been super-visible during the awards season is because she’s been filming a movie in Nashville. She’s playing Tammy Wynette to Michael Shannon’s George Jones. They had a torrid love story involving broken marriages, alcoholism, etc. I think her absence from LA has helped her a bit, it’s made people appreciate her performance, not her “Oscar campaign.”

This weekend, I had a thought/premonition of Kristen Stewart being the surprise Best Actress winner. It could actually happen – the votes could be split and K-Stew could end up walking on the Oscar stage in some God awful Chanel gown and it would be gleefully chaotic. That being said, I don’t completely hate her Chanel look here! It’s kind of… okay??

Penelope Cruz also wore Chanel to the luncheon. Penelope and Javier have his-and-hers Oscar nominations this year and they seem to be having fun with it. Javier seems especially loose and happy this awards season. Anyway, I dislike this Chanel! It’s way too twee.

Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis posed together at the event – I don’t think Jada came? Ellis played Oracene Price in King Richard, so they are on-screen husband and wife. Ellis also got a surprise Oscar nomination and Will is so proud of her! I think Will is the shoo-in for Best Actor at this point.

Ariana DeBose looked cute in this pink Hugo Boss suit. It’s the very weird situation where she’s flying under the radar entirely and yet most people think she’s going to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress?

Maggie Gyllenhaal in black – her husband was there, but he didn’t pose with her. I kind of like her dress? And I think she’s going to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

I actually like all the looks besides Chastain’s. I just don’t love the sleeves. Penelope’s is a little twee but I like the color and there’s something retro-ish about it that I like.

I am slowly working my way through the Oscar contenders (except this weekend we watched House of Gucci bc I thought Gaga was nominated, I forgot about the snub lol) but I couldn’t finish the Lost Daughter. It was just so boring but also a little uncomfortable. I think I got about 45 minutes into it? Maybe I’ll give it another shot.

I was surprised at how much I liked Being the Ricardos.

I still feel like I have a lot of movies to go, lol. But i’m excited bc with all the streaming and the later Oscar show, this is one of the first years in a long time where I have the chance to watch most, if not all, of the nominated movies.

I didn’t like Lost Daughter at all. Boring. Confusing. What’s the point? Why are you wasting Olivia on this? And did Ed Harris wander in from another film?

I found it a flawed film although I thought Jessie Buckley was incredible in it. Afterwards I looked up the some details of the book it was adapted from and a lot of the things that didn’t quite make sense to me in the film were things that had been changed from the book. So I’m not sure it was such a great adapted screenplay really.

    Neither? It’s just meh.
Jessica Chastain is lovely but I don’t really care for her style.

I think that Chastain looks fabulous except those awful cuffs and the shoes!! My gawd, could they be any clunkier!! As for KStew, love the jacket and the color on Cruz looks fabulous but the dress is a mess!! I think DeBose is the best dressed!! She looks fabulous head to toe!! As for Maggie, she is similar to Olivia Coleman, marching to the drum of their own beat. Though Maggie’s dress is interesting.

Are the designers on strike at Chanel? I am beginning to wonder given the awful fashion coming out of that house. 😳

    I like these except Penelope’s.

I really love Ariana’s! She looks so cute.

I like everyone’s looks except for Aunjanue Ellis and Maggie G.

    I like KS’s look. I don’t care for anyone else’s, and I reaallly did not like MG’s.

I need that jacket Kristen is wearing

    I love Ariana’s look!

Penelope’s dress looks like someone started making a Jackie O copycat jacket and she wore it before they put the pieces together.

Kristen Stewart still looks so awkward and uncomfortable, yet she has a chanel contract right? She seems to hate this process, red carpets etc yet she signed up for it with this endorsement? I’m not understanding

Will Smith is next gen Tom Hanks. His “Welcome to Earth” series is fascinating and great to watch with my kid.

I believe Chastain is on the petite side, and I tend to believe that tea length skirts/dresses just make short women look shorter. So I’m not loving her outfit, and I’m not even going to get into her sleeves.
And I say this in all of my 5’2 glory.

Jessica is a lovely woman, but I rarely like her fashion choices.

Kstew continues to win the “FACE!!” part of the equation and her clothes continue to be puzzling. She is gorgeous, though.

I like Penelope’s dress because she looks so happy and the color is lovely, but how cute would that dress be with little white tennis shoes or a pair of espadrilles?

I think Aunjanue’s suit has too many things going on (striking color, oversize bow tie, velvet cuffs, fancy fasteners, patterned taffeta…) but she looks regal and I don’t have to wear it.

Ariana is lovely and the color is great; just wish the pants were a bit shorter!

Maggie, that face you make in every picture is not your friend.

K Stew’s is MILES better than yesterday’s. At least the buttons are in the right place.

    Penelope’s body language is telling.
Loved King Richard but wish it was 15 minutes longer and had more footage of both Serena and Venus kicking ass and taking names as Pros.

I like these looks but what is Maggie wearing?
