Did “Balloon Boy’s” family set up the manhunt for publicity?

Falcon Heene, a six year-old boy in Fort Collins, Colorado, was the subject of a massive manhunt yesterday when he went missing coincidentally right around the same time that his father, an amateur storm chaser, set off a huge weather-type helium balloon. It was thought that little Falcon was on the balloon, and footage of it flying was broadcast on CNN as rescuers scrambled to catch up with it and find the boy. When it landed the child wasn’t aboard. At first it was thought that he might have fallen off at some point, but he was eventually found hiding in a box in the family’s garage.

The official story is that Falcon was scared after his dad yelled at him for playing too close to the balloon and decided to go hide out for a while. The situation is suspicious, though, especially in light of the fact that the Heene family has been featured on the show Wife Swap twice and is potentially out for publicity.

In an interview with CNN, Falcon’s dad asked him why he hid in the garage if he heard them calling for him, and the kid spilled the beans. “You guys said we did this for the show.” The dad just said “man,” as in “oh, man, my kid ruined our scheme,” and the mom simply said “no.” If this is true, that family should pay back the cost of the manhunt for their child.

The family has since been making the talkshow rounds, and the poor kid got sick twice when he was asked what he meant when he said “we did this for the show”:

The 6-year-old boy at the center of the runaway balloon saga got sick twice on national television when he and his father were asked during separate TV interviews what he meant about his comment that “we did this for a show.”

During an ABC interview, Falcon Heene (HEE’-nee) said Friday: “Mom, I feel like I’m going to vomit.” He then left the room with his mother and could be heard gagging.
During a live interview on NBC shown simultaneously, Falcon threw up into a container when his father was answering the same question.

[From AP via Google]

TMZ has confirmed with the local police department that they’ve heard about Falcon’s comment on CNN, with the cops adding that many people have called in tips about it. The Heene family is now the subject of an investigation. It seemed like a heartwarming story of a child found after a scary close call, but in all likelihood the whole thing was a set up. I have a five year-old who loves to hide and we often play this game where we pretend we don’t know where he is. There’s no way he would hide for over an hour like that, though, and I doubt there are many kids who would. Shame on that family for using their poor kid like that.

This is what happens when you have famewhores for parents. Lindsay Lohan and Gosselin kids take note! Some people shouldn’t be allowed to have kids if they are just going to warp their minds.

  2. lilred says:

Damn fame whores. What were they thinking using a 6 yr old child like that. Sickning.

  3. photo jojo says:

Duh. That was my FIRST thought when this story came out.

  4. MonicaBee says:

The father of that family is so full of s*it. What an idiot douchebag.

That family needs to pay back every red cent that was spent searching for their “lost” kid.

    Infuriating.

  5. nAynAy says:

I wasn’t too sure at the beginning, but then when I heard they got the ballon down, the boy wasn’t in there. That’s messed up!! You don’t do @#$% like that. The parents should certainly be held accountable for this prank. Just like that chick the ‘Runaway Bride’, who claimed she was kidnapped and raped. She was sentenced to community service. I highly doubt, and I could be wrong, but doubt it, that the kids thought up this prank all by themselves.

  6. jabberingaway says:

I smell a rat….their whole story sounds very fishy indeed. Little kids don’t hide for hours! And little kids blurt out truths! Investigate this family please!
Kudos to the community and the law enforcement officials of Fort Collins Colorado! Great job!

  7. gina says:

CHECK OUT CNN’S INTERVIEW…the boy says flat out: “It was for show” They’re total frauds!

  8. MSat says:

Have you seen this family on “Wife Swap” and “Storm chasers”? They are assholes, and those kids are out of control brats.

  9. tooey says:

I’d like to point out that when the boy left to vomit, he left ALONE. Neither father nor mother spontaneously got up to assist him. The mother got up and followed *after* being urged by someone off camera and assured that it was “ok” to help her son by Diane Sawyer. You could tell Sawyer was skeezed that no one was helping this kid. These people came off extremely shady to me….

  10. Judy says:

Father is not a convincing liar. Can’t even keep his own story straight. I think those children were used as pawns. Disgraceful.

  11. Celebitchy says:

OMG they were on “storm chasers” too?!

  12. Stephie says:

Ugh, this was bad. I hope they get charged and have to make restitution for their stupidity.

  13. GatsbyGal says:

This is child abuse. To use your son like this, force him to hide by himself for so long, and then drag him on talkshows while he’s throwing up. Why is he throwing up, anyway? Is it because he’s scared because he knows his parents have told him to lie? He must be a nervous wreck of a child.

  14. sarah says:

I don’t even think there was a place, as in a basket, for the kid to have been sitting in that balloon. If that’s the case, why didn’t the parents know that? And, I heard that they called the press before calling the police. After these interviews, I really think the whole thing is shady.

  15. Diwali6 says:

This is so not funny! They are making the poor child sick with their lies. I was really worried about the little boy when I first heard the story! What a farce! The parents are horrible!!!

  16. justathought says:

Dad was in the HOT seat on LKL. LOL!
    Shameful…mental abuse of a child.
    Hope these crazy parents pay!
    AND where is the basket?!

  17. Firestarter says:

They are storm chasers, UFO enthusiasts, former Wife Swap participants TWICE. The parents have made a foul music video that you can see on You Tube where the kids use the words f*****, f*** and are covered in brown paint coming out of a toilet, giving the finger. These people DISGUST me! I knew from the beginning yesterday that this was all for attention.

The father is also a terrible hot head and was very harsh and insulting to both the women that swapped places with his wife.

The nerve of them to waste the time of Colorado EMS service workers, the sherriff’s dept AND the military (who were going to enlist the help of a Blackhawk helicopter), and possibly prevent other people who may have been in need of help from getting it.

The older brother, I am sure, was in on the deal since he was the one that told everyone he saw him take off AND fall from the alleged “basket” that hung.

The kid stated last night that they were hoping to get a reality show out of this. It makes me sick that these people will be on the covers of magazines, on EVERY talk show and news programm for the next several weeks. I am also disgusted by the fact that people, including his delusional mother, are calling him a “mini-hero”! For what? Being a stupid little famewhoring brat and hiding from people trying to get attention? That is what is wrong with this world, no discipline on children!

The father was horribly rude and hot headed with Wolf Blitzer during their interview last night. There is already talk of a book AND movie! Can you imagine that? What decent publisher or Hollywood studio would even propose such a thing!

UGH! This thing made me so mad yesterday.

  18. Rosalee says:

when did parents stop parenting? We have seen the Lohans ignore their daughter as she spins out of control, one parent believes she is just fine the other uses her for their moment in the spotlight. We witness the Gosselins use their children for what passes for fame and a pay cheque, a single crazy woman has 8 babies to add to her already large family of 6 children and she gets a reality show and now we have the balloon boy and his crazy parents, no doubt some idiot from TLC is throwing together a show treatment. Maybe if we should ignore these horrible parents they will just go away.

  19. Firestarter says:

Here is the link to the video if anyone is interested:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBWJXXgaYBo

The vid may NSFW?! It does contain foul language and such.

  20. zonalpony says:

who names their kid Falcon in the first place?

  21. birdie says:

whoa firestarter! can you link to that video? this is really sad smut…

  22. cara says:

The only thing I saw on TV for this was a clip of the kid showing where he hid. Which really seemed to me to show it was bs. He couldn’t get up too well by himself….it seemed he was definitely placed there.

  23. Rae says:

Firestarter, the kid is 6. Six. To call a 6 year old a “stupid little famewhoring brat” is just too much. If you want to rail at the parents for being stupid famewhoring asses, go for it. They knew what they were doing, and they used their child to do it. It’s obvious that the little boy is an emotional wreck over this. When you’re 6, your trust in your parents is absolute. He did what they told him to do. This child doesn’t need discipline; he needs therapy. And good parents to set an example for him.

  24. Firestarter says:

@Rae- Check out the video. Just because he is 6 does not mean he is an innocent little angel! There have been children under 10 who have murdered other children, so no one needs to get all angry at me for my comment. He is a brat, and I did rail on the parents. The little monster is also a great actor, throwing up in a bowl on the Today show this morning.

    Let’s agree to disagree. : )

  25. Sudini says:

The first I heard about any of this was this morning during this guy’s interview on Today (what I realize now was the post-barf interview).

The minute this guy started talking I got the creepiest feeling about him. He came across as cavalier and disrespectful. Then I felt bad for thinking he was slimey with no real reason to.

Now that I’ve seen the preceeding interviews I’m pissed off. This poor child obviously got sick on TV due to anxiety. He’s probably experiencing extreme guilt and cognitive dissonance (wanting to please his father while knowing what he’s doing is deceptive and wrong). Plus, he very innocently revealed this to be a hoax on LKL and probably felt like a traitor to his family by doing so.

These people should be locked up. Disgusting famewhores. This is what reality tv breeds. It attracts and gives a stage to these no talent, narcissistic low-lifes.

  26. Judy says:

Firestarter: “The kid stated last night that they were hoping to get a reality show out of this.”

Where do you get your facts? That was NEVER said. The little kid, when asked why he didn’t answer his father, said, “We did it for the show.” That’s when his slimebag of a father came unglued. A six-year-old child does not say things like, “We were hoping to get a reality show out of this.” And you don’t have to be so insulting to other posters. It’s getting old. I would say it was obviously a hoax and those children were used as pawns.

  27. lin234 says:

I found this link from jezebel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HoqRIAwkps&feature=player_embedded

It’s the 2nd wife swap episode that the family did on tv. The father and mother constantly yell loudly at strangers they just met and clearly have no respect for anyone. The father leads a fine example for his sons as they have no manners.

At one point in the episode, the father throws food and milk while yelling at the “new mother”. I’ve watched wife swap before and this is the only time I’ve ever seen a producer step in and say this is not right.

I don’t believe for one minute that the boy would have dared to hide away for hours by himself with both of his parents yelling at the top of their lungs for him. If you watch the episode, you’ll see that their mother is not some mute lady and their father can yell loud enough for the entire neighborhood to hear.

These people definitely planned this for media attention and unfortunately they are getting it.

  28. birdie says:

@ Firestarter – – That video was too much. It was awful. I’m pretty sure I heard “I see a fagg*t up in a tree, that fagg*t tried to pee on me” and then they throw rocks and brag that they killed the “fagg*t”…

What kind of parents teach their children to speak this way? And then record it and put it on youtube?!?? Why would they teach them the kind of hatred exemplified by this video “Pussification” which they define as soccer moms and p*ssies who think they are better than everyone. The whole video they ask people to rate it and leave comments. The parents even interspersed their pathetic musical talents (dad plays harmonica) in solos, in between the kids embarrassing and inappropriate rapping.

This family is repulsive. These kids are learning nothing positive or healthy from their parents. These people are desperate for attention.

  29. Firestarter says:

Whatever, Judy. You have your opinion and I have mine.

    Have a great day!

Yes Birdie, you did hear that word. Among others. Disgusting parents. They are liars and manipulators and they have no control over their own children.
If you check out You Tube clips of when they were on Wife Sawp the second time, in clip 5 I think, they have the children of both families meet with each other, and the darling little Heene children proceed to tell the other kids how theior mother is old and a dummy. Nice kids!

The father asked Jimmy Kimmel for $20k to place Kimmels name on a rocket that dad Heene was building.

  30. Vibius says:

9news (local news in Colorado) is saying that the police sent body language experts to interview everyone. The kids were interview by themselves and the cops were convinced that its legit. Until I read that this morning, I thought it was BS. I still do, but I am not 100% sure anymore.

    http://www.9news.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=125198&catid=339

  31. Judy says:

Firestarter: I see you just changed your post to me, so I will change my response to you and simply say: You have a good day too.

  32. Ana says:

I was really upset when I saw the story. Then when I found out that he was in the attic the whole time I becames suspicious.
But I figured that the boys were playing a prank on their parents that got out of hand. I mean the other kid said that he saw the boy climb into the balloon and fly away. But he didn’t see him running away from the balloon into the attic? I don’t understand???

  33. Sudini says:

This family is disgraceful. I just watched the “rap” video they made on youtube and it’s absolutely vile. These parents are teaching their kids how to be Grade A assholes of the highest degree.

Some people should NOT be allowed to raise kids.

  34. Cinderella says:

The fact that they are immediately “making the talk show rounds” says a lot.

If they have any Wife Swap money left and haven’t spent it on their ridiculous Dexter’s Laboratory experiments, they need to cough it up.

I really hope the authorities send them a big fat bill.

  35. cara says:

@lin234 – they’ve stepped in also (producers of wife swap) with the holier then thou dad from san fran and the mom from Mo. He was “green” and “liberal” and yet kept putting the other mom down because she didn’t know anything, as she was from middle America. I don’t even think the dad was an actual American. Web sites hating that dad were even formed. He was that bad.

Maybe they can put both dad’s in a fight to the death match and air it on tv. – I kid

I think Michael K over at Dlisted said it best when he said, “never trust a grown man with a ’90’s hair cut” Touche’

  36. Sudini says:

    @Firestarter:
I TOTALLY agree with you! The six year old is a first class brat – I just saw a clip of wife swap where the kid says to the other mother “F*ck these rules! while his father sits there almost proudly. The kid’s obviously been taught to be a brat by his loser parents.

That father needs to be tied down and medicated heavily on the hour. He’s disgusting. I hope karma comes knocking for him soon before he can do anymore damage.

  37. Firestarter says:

@Cara- I was outraged to at the father from San Francisco and how he treated the mother from Missouri. He made San Fran look terrible with his disgraceful behavior. He, like this Heene creature, has no respect for women or people they deem intellectually inferior to them.

Funny thing is, in the end, both men ended up looking like the horrible individuals that they are, and that was sweet! I had heard that the wife of the San Francisco man, lost lots of business because of her husbands antics. I think she was pretty shocked by him herself.

The Heene mother is also another hot head, she was very insulting to the man she swapped with (that sounded dirty!), screaming and yelling at him like a crazed banshee. That family needs some mental help, stat!

  38. Dingles says:

Why is anyone surprised by any of this? We live in a society where the kind of behavior displayed by these “parents” is rewarded with nationally televised and magazine interviews, book deals, reality shows and lots and lots of money. Is is absolutely revolting and irresponsible? Yes. But as long as it pays we’re going to keep seeing this trend of child abuse/neglect for profit.

The only thing we can do, the only RIGHT thing to do, is to stop watching the shows and stop buying the magazines. And in this case in particular, sue the pants off those idiots for giving a false report to authorities and wasting thousands in taxpayer dollars on a publicity stunt.

  39. Ally says:

With the Gosselins in meltdown and off the air, I guess these dumb and greedy parents thought this was their chance to snag a show, as the kid says in the CNN clip. If they hadn’t gotten caught in this (by inadvertently raising a truth-teller) they would have had a chance, too — evidently the Wife Swap producers thought they were obnoxious enough for a second episode.

  40. lin234 says:

@ firestarter: That Heene woman does scream like a crazed banshee! lol Maybe it’s because she doesn’t speak fluent English but it seems like she feels the need to scream in order to be heard or get her point across.

I started hating her when she laughed at the “new husband” for driving his son to school and because his son sat in the back, she called him a chauffeur. My dad is a engineer who was lucky to be able to go into the office whenever he wanted. He drove me to school from jr high to high school. I always sat in the back because I could put my backpack down beside me. My dad wasn’t my chauffeur. He was just nice. I had plenty of friends with fathers that did the same thing. She was a complete idiot during the show. Her husband was just scary. Those kids are on the path to becoming mini- me monsters like their father.

@ Dingles & Ally: You guys are completely right on!

  41. HelpMeWithThis... says:

After seeing that ballon and its small size, it seemed to me that no human being, even a small child would be light enough to be lifted by it. It takes a lot of helium to provide enough boyancy to raise something into the atmosphere. Why has no one called the parents on this or am I wrong on the physics here?

  42. Firestarter says:

@Sudini- Yes, the parents think it is so clever and cute that their children are insulting and disrespectful to adults. The father thinks he is a real smooth operator too. Why would any parent want to raise their children that way, is beyond me. It makes me mad that they will end up profitting on some level from this b.s. There will be people out there that will buy their crap and feed into the stupidity of it all. There are t-shirts being made already about Balloon Boy. Stupid, because he never left the house and was never in the balloon.

@Ally- They were allegedly on Wife Swap’s 100th episode, because fans of the show had voted them and the other family in as repeat Swappers because they were so over the top and viewers thought it would be great to see two such peculiar families trade the others lives. I am sure the powers that be had more to do with it than the fans of teh series, but that is what I read.

  43. feedmeplz says:

I hope the kids are home schooled. I can’t imagine how they treat the teachers..

  44. jule says:

I will be having a little boy in January. I have been thinking hard about what I want to teach him and have been writing down my goals as a parent, things like creating a safe atmosphere, make him a decent human being who contributes to society etc….It breaks my newly maternal heart, that parents would do this to a child. Would shape their children like this. I scares me to think that my son will encounter the products of sh*t parents.

  45. Catherine says:

The Dad was on the Today show and he put on a good show. He is such a faker when it came to emotional issues.

  46. javelin says:

Yeah, they were hoping to get their own quirky-family reality show on TLC. I saw them on CNN for a minute last night and immediately felt they were full of shit. They didn’t seem genuinely relieved or in shock– just nervous, and (in the kids’ case) a little bored.

  47. original kate says:

no way is their story true. i don’t buy any of it…except the “we did it for the show” part.

  48. JaundiceMachine says:

We’re in Denver, so we were inundated with update after update of this crazy situation. It was all anyone could talk about at work.

As soon as they found the kid, I turned to Mr. Machine and said, “Well, there goes that kid’s college fund”. (Referring to the expense of misusing Search and Rescue.)

To which Mr. Machine responded, “Just wait for the book deal.”

Can’t keep a good famewhore down.

  49. Fat Elvis says:

jule: I’m sure your son will turn out just fine, because it’s clear you have your head on straight when it comes to teaching him right from wrong.

As for this family, the craziness is more than my work-addled brain can process, so I’ll just say that I agree with those who think they suck in the worst way.

  50. pickelhaube says:

    jules-

Congrats! I hope you’re having a little Aquarius (I’m an Aquarius, we’re the best)! I’m so happy to see a parent who wants to do the best for their child, and I know you’re gonna be a great mom. We need more parents like you, instead of these horrid people. It makes me sick to see that people like this can breed, while so many people who would be awesome parents cannot have children. Thank you (and thanks to all the other good parents out there) for trying to do the best by your son. Believe me, us childless (so far!) people are resting a little more easily knowing that not every parent out there is like these monsters. Maybe I won’t have to be so scared for the fate of the world now!

  51. jule says:

thanks for your support! He may be on the cusp of capricorn and aquarius! This baby was a welcome suprise. I remeber thinking “ohmigosh what kind of world is this kid coming in to??” and then I realised that if I raise this kid right, he can counter balance some of the mislead ones??? heh

  52. BW says:

Jule – you’re way ahead of the game just thinking about what you want for your son. He’ll do fine. Just make sure you talk to him, give him boundaries and examples of what to do in certain situations, how to behave at others’ homes. That’s a good way to build self-esteem. When they come home feeling good about how they handled a situation because they were ready for it. Don’t worry about your son running into families like this. You’ll have taught him better, and he’ll come home and tell you what he saw at other homes. The he’ll tell you he’s glad you’re his Mom. He will know right from wrong.

  53. Jag says:

I say that CPS should investigate them, since they’re obviously stressing out the child to the point that he’s being sick on national tv.

Otherwise, I’d love a ban on anything to do with them from all of the media. They should not get what they wanted out of this, and they should have to pay back every cent that was spent in looking for the boy.

  54. wondertrash says:

If this stunt involved animal abuse we would be so outraged right now – as opposed to being mildly chagrined at being duped. Poor Michael Vick – if only he’d been running a child fighting ring instead of a dog fighting ring.

  55. NFLer says:

I watched the video where the little boy confesses “for the show” but look at his face afterwards. I’m wondering if the Dad had his hand behind his son’s back and is telling him to stop because after that the kid stays quiet. In the parent’s quest for fame and money they better watch that they don’t fuck things up and have Dept. of Children and Families looking into their business. That balloon is ridiculous too.

  56. JXL56 says:
