JoJo Siwa didn’t go to the Kids’ Choice Awards because Nickelodeon didn’t invite her

JoJo Siwa came out in January 2021. She received a lot of love, and it felt like a landmark moment. Siwa’s brand is wholesome, family-friendly, bubbly, kid-friendly entertainment, and to see her come out as a teenager and be accepted was so important for so many LGBTQ+ kids and their families. Siwa really has enjoyed widespread support from most channels… except Nickelodeon, the channel which “made her famous.” Nickelodeon played games last year, blocking Siwa from performing certain songs on her (successful) tour. Now it looks like Nickelodeon didn’t invite Siwa to this weekend’s Kids’ Choice Awards. Gee, I wonder why.

JoJo Siwa says she “wasn’t invited” to the 2022 Kids’ Choice Awards.

“A lot of you have been asking me why I’m not at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards tonight and the answer is very simple,” the “Boomerang” singer said in a video clip shared via Instagram on Saturday. “I wasn’t invited.”

Siwa, 18, who has a thorny relationship with the network, added, “I’m not sure why, but I just didn’t get an invite.”

Later, the pop star said on her Instagram Story that someone tagged her in a clip in which her song “One Chance” could be heard playing at the awards show.

“So my song made it, but I didn’t,” she said with a seemingly sarcastic laugh. Nickelodeon did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

This is so dumb from Nickelodeon. Keep in mind that all of these networks which do kid-friendly programming have tons of skeletons in their closets. They overwork their talent, they toss kids into the spotlight with little to no training, they churn these kid-stars out like a factory and a lot worse. The fact that Siwa is a bright, well-adjusted, happy and functional young gay woman is a huge success story for this factory system. Except they don’t want THIS kind of success story. It f–king sucks.

Do these organisations share PR people with the British royals? I know there’s a lot of hardcore anti-gay sentiment in the US but surely even if you look at this from a purely commercial perspective (the ethics argument being blindingly obvious) there are a lot more people who are neutral to pro-diversity who will respond positively to her presence. How do they think this is the right call to take?

Well, both Nickelodeon and the Royals do like hanging out with pedophiles. A network that employed and empowered Dan Schneider should be thanking its lucky stars JoJo wants anything to do with them.

I’m not even going to touch on how long Nickelodeon let Dan Snyder verbally abuse their talent, and if the rumors are true, there was sexual abuse too. They quietly fired him at the height of Me Too.

These networks for kids are a cesspool behind the scenes. Thats why i always SMH at their stance, the hypocrisy is laughable.

Weird how other members of the LGBTQ+ community were present or honored but because they didn’t invite Jojo Siwa it’s immediately assumed that there is prejudice behind the decision.

I’m going to add, if we need to be side-eyeing anything about the Kids Choice Awards, it should be the fact that Drake was a nominee…….

She shines with her smiles and attitude. Smart and adorable. What a great role model. Nickelodeon better shape up and get with the program.

I’m afraid that that this shows how the right-wing “Disney is GrOoMiNg” campaign is working. The right-wing aim, in making these kind of Q-Anon accusations, is to make companies afraid to affirm LGBTQ+ people.

I know Jojo Siwa from Youtube, not Nickelodeon but I think she used to be on Dance Moms? Which explains why she did so well on Dancing with the Stars (I looked it up, she placed second). I don’t know her background with Nickelodeon, if she was on a show or they were sponsoring her concert tour? Whatever was going on with her song list was no doubt very unfair and Jojo had every right to air her grievances about it. I’m sure her coming out as queer had Nickelodeon scrambling because anything to do with LGBT is something they tend to shy away from.

Unfortunately, I think this is also a case of “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you” type of thing. She had previously made public her complaints with the company she had signed a contract with about having issues during her tour. They retaliated by not inviting her to the Kids’ Choice Awards. They’re fully within their rights to do that unfortunately. It’s not fair at all and Nickelodeon needs to evolve with the times. But Jojo is all over the place and seems to have deals and contracts with all kinds of media. I think she’s going to be fine. It hurts her feelings but she’s still making lots of $$$ and now can choose to work with more LGBT friendly companies.

Nickelodeon had a great Blue’s Clues song for pride last year. I believe they even had a float with a polyamorous family, if I remember correctly. I don’t follow anything with them other than seeing that clip last year so it’s weird that they were okay putting that song out there with a nick jr. show but not inviting Jojo, assuming it’s homophobia. I wonder if there are any other issues? Legal stuff? Link to pride video: https://youtu.be/d4vHegf3WPU

It seems strange to me that they would be excluding her due to her sexual orientation because I know at least one of the cartoons they regularly show (The Loud House) not only has a gay couple raising a child but also one of the teenagers in it is either lesbian or bisexual, so doesn’t seem they’d be homophobic leaning,.. wonder if there was some other issue with Jojo?

She looks fantastic and the short hair looks really good on her. She looks like she is happy and thriving, and I’m so happy for her.
