ESPN’s Steve Phillips fired after fatal attraction cheating scandal (update)

ESPN baseball analyst and former Mets general manager Steve Phillips, 46, earned headlines last week when it came out that his wife was divorcing him after a scandal in which a 22 year-old girl he’d had an affair with harassed his family. The young woman, a production assistant at ESPN, befriended one of Phillips’ teen sons on Facebook, called his wife several times, and left a letter for his wife at his family home. The letter claimed a more serious relationship with Phillips than he said existed, although Philips admitted to sleeping with the girl three times.

ESPN suspended Phillips from his job as a result of the scandal. Phillips has a history of cheating with women at work and was sued for sexual harassment years ago for an affair with a woman who worked for the Mets. Now ESPN has fired Phillips and issued a statement that vaguely references his bad behavior:

Steve Phillips, the ex-New York Mets GM, is now an ex-ESPN analyst, as well: 46-year-old broadcaster Monday was fired by the sports juggernaut after becoming embroiled in a Fatal Attraction-esque scandal with Brooke Hundley, a 22-year-old ESPN production assistant.

“Steve Phillips is no longer working for ESPN,” network spokesman Josh Krulewitz said in a statement. “His ability to be an effective representative for ESPN has been significantly and irreparably damaged, and it became evident it was time to part ways.”

Phillips admittedly made love to Hundley three times this past summer before ending the affair. Hundley then, according to police reports, harassed Phillips’ wife Marni over the phone; attempted to make contact with Phillips’ 16-year-old son on Facebook; and did damage to his Wilton, Connecticut home. She left a handwritten letter on the premises for his wife, validating her trysts with the ex-Mets G.M. by describing a “big birthmark on his crotch… and one on his left inner thigh.”

Marni Phillips, the mother of Phillips’ four sons, has filed papers for divorce.

The only sad thing about this story is the fact that Phillips’ wife won’t be getting the huge amount of alimony she deserves for putting up with his serial cheating. This guy won’t get another job for a while and it will probably pay significantly less than his last gig. They may have to sell their home at a loss and it will be his ex wife and kids that have to pay the most for a dad who couldn’t keep it in his pants. Meanwhile ESPN reports that Phillips has entered a “treatment facility.” He probably hopes to get his job back after he emerges a “changed man.”

Update: The woman involved, Brooke Hundley, no longer works at ESPN, according to their spokesperson. It’s unclear whether she quit or was fired.

thats what i was thinking-reduced alimony. that’s a shame. and i love that the statement says he ‘made love’ 3 times to that fugly beastie. made love? um….

  2. Icecat says:

I may receive crap for this…
But, if your going to cheat, at least do it with someone cute. If I we’re his wife I would feel horrible… Well I haven’t actually seen a picture of his wife so I guess I shouldn’t judge…

    Just sayin…

  3. stacy says:

“Phillips admittedly made love to Handley three times…”

Oh please, you know they wanted to write they f#@!*ed like bunnies for the whores that they are!

  4. Firestarter says:

Well, his week is starting off with a bang- Divorce and fired.

  5. Tia C says:

I’m with you Icecat – if you’re going to potentially wreck your life by cheating, at least make it worth it and cheat with someone hot! This woman’s a toad. He must have some sexual addiction issue or something, that’s the only explanation I can think of. It couldn’t have been her personality he was attracted to, cuz she sounds 6 shades of crazy! Yeah, the wife and kids definitely lose in this scenario. Too bad. I do hope his wife has a kickass lawyer.

  6. Andrea says:

Wow Steve was it really worth it? Perhaps he could get his job back, but more behind the scenes. I’m only saying that because I don’t want his family to suffer financially.

  7. downlover says:

Feel sorry for the wife and kids but am hoping his wife has an angry lawyer. He got exatly what he deserved. Now they need to fire that twit he twitted with.

  8. Feebee says:

OK, he deserved to get fired but she’s still working there after inappropriate behaviour that could be argued as criminal. She should also be at least suspended.

Ultimately, again, it’s his family that will suffer the greatest fallout.

  9. Firestarter says:

@FeeBee- Agreed. She shouldn’t be working there any more than he should be. She is a nasty, sick, unstable stalker. He is a cad, no doubt, but she is certifiable and should be unemployed as well.

Also, if you are having an affair with a married man, when you blow the whistle on him, don’t act as if you are doing it for the sake of his wife and family, because you aren’t. Don’t blab on in a letter what a nice person you are, because you aren’t. The only reason a woman blows the whistle on a man is when she feels she is losing him, not because she is a nice person and concerned about his family. She is a nasty, evil nut job who needs to suffer as well for her part in the whole mess.

  10. birdie says:

Hope he saved for his retirement. I don’t see where his career could go now, except down the pooper.

  11. QB says:

I don’t think how the person cheated looked matters. The fact is that he is a cheater and got what he derserved.

Cheating is cheating. Plus if my bf cheated on me with someone hotter I would feel horrible , “She banged my bF and she is hotter than me, damn”. But if she is ugly I could feel better about myself and just say he is just a weirdo.

  12. Tree Fiddy says:

GODDAMN! She’s hideous. He actually had consentual sex with that thing?

  13. Madchen says:

Ha ha, QB, you have a good point!

  14. lottaluvin says:

Phillips is a dog and deserved to be fired but that woman should be out as well.

  15. Green Is Good says:

Nice going, Jackass. Lost your family and your job. I hope humping that mental patient hag was worth it.

  16. Popcorny says:

His family would have better off if that psycho creasty beast had gone a hair further like McNair’s mistress-in-distress did -she at least a certain “poetry” to her madness (if not poetic justice).
The best poetic justice I can find in this scenario is that (above) picture.
There can’t be a one of you who didn’t blanched with a “WTF!” or “ewwww” grimace upon seeing his big sweaty sweetie for the first time.
I myself have seen this pic about a 100 times in recent days -and I still skeeve every time.

  17. Fire says:

    men.think.with.their.dicks.

plain and simple. it’s a shame for his family how this is all playing out.

  18. Tia C says:

@ QB – LOL – didn’t think of it that way – you have a good point!

  19. Squirtle says:

Wait a second, what is he getting treatment for? I didn’t know “cheating” was a curable disease! Oh well maybe there is hope for him afterall…

  20. Xavier says:

    She’s a MAN baby!

  21. wow says:

IMO, looks have nothing to do with the reasoning behind why people cheat. People cheat because they have willing accomplices and for the most part can get away with it.

Its almost as crazy as when people think that being beautiful or handsome will keep your spouse from cheating on you. Looks will not make someone cheat, nor keep them faithful. People do those things because they choose to go that route. On the same note, those who are faithful do so because they choose to be.

  22. wow says:

Forgot to add that I’m almost impressed that they actually fired the guy. Usually (in the real world) he’d only get a “talking to” from the higher ups, and she would get promoted. Glad to see that is not the case this time. And I also agree with those who said she should be fired as well. Wasn’t she stalking him or something?

I’m glad they handled it this way. Bad behaviour shouldn’t be rewarded.

  23. Eden says:

Sucks to be him, but he brought this upon himself. I do feel sorry for his family, they didn’t deserve this!!!

  24. Pipz says:

u know wat, reading about men cheating articles from time to time, is somehow turns my thought from a hideous concept of cheating until i guess, its a common thing for men. yes, to hv sex wit other women besides his companion. i do much hate that concept but its somewhat a reality out there. or maybe i hv a skepticism of men. i do. Steve just unfortunately a celebrity and busted out. so too much men out there who do the same with steve and they still enjoy their time with his family. and now i see this as a common culture now, crap.

  25. la chica says:

serves him right for boffing a homely 22-year-old borderline. that said, i hope she gets into therapy. giving up your body to a married man and then publicly shaming him for abandoning you, do nothing for your already damaged self-esteem.
