Katy Perry on raising her daughter: ‘I have a sister, a nanny & Orlando really taps in’

Katy Perry hustled to get her music career off the ground and once she established herself, she secured as many contracts as she could handle. Currently she’s venturing into non-entertainment businesses, like her shoes and non-alcoholic beverage company. It’s smart for her to diversify into things that don’t require her to be in front of the camera. I say that because eventually Katy might want to do business out of her home or in Italy or somewhere that isn’t a backlot, so it will be nice to have that flexibility. It will also be nice if she decides to have more kids, which she said she is open to. She had daughter Daisy during the pandemic, which must have been a unique experience for first time parents. While it was probably isolating, it was also a huge amount of time that families could stay home with new babies without anything pulling them away. So having another child under what a hopefully non-pandemic situation will be eye-opening. But Katy said that she has it covered because she has plenty of help. Not only does her sister help, she has a wonderful nanny and Daisy’s dad, Orlando Bloom, picks up wherever Katy needs.

While (Katy) Perry lives her life in the public eye, she’s been able to balance her busy career while keeping her daughter out of the spotlight thanks to a lot of helping hands.

“I have great support,” the singer shared. “I have a great sister. I have a wonderful nanny. And Orlando really taps in.”

The couple recently returned from living in New Castle, Kentucky for a month where Bloom was busy filming his latest thriller, Red Right Hand.

“We do this funny thing where I go and visit him for a month while he’s making a movie and then when he’s not making a movie, he kind of takes charge on being number one parent,” Perry explained. “Then I go and do all my business stuff, so we really are just tapping each other in and out.”

To be honest, when I first read Katy’s line about Orlando “tapping in,” I got angry. I read the headline like a “he babysits” kind of thing. But this is totally different. It sounds like Orlando is a completely present partner in raising Daisy. That sounds consistent with what we’ve heard from both Katy and Miranda. I think their working arrangement, of one being parent while the other works, is fairly common in the entertainment industry. At least many couples say that’s what they do.

I appreciate that Katy acknowledged her nanny as a part of her team. I’m sure her family and she and Orlando are very involved, but Hollywood parents always try to make it sound like they can be everywhere at once. It’s good for a kid to have a consistent schedule and a nanny helps make that happen. A lot more famous moms are talking about their nannies and I think it’s great. It’s great for the nanny profession and for lessening the pressure of the idea that a mom has to do it all. I pay people to clean my house. There are four people who live in this house who could do it but while we all keep it tidy, no one does that good a job keeping it clean. So I hire people who are really good at it to do it twice a month. I’m sure there are people who think I should do all of it but again, I am one of four who make it dirty so… how is it just my job?

I think she knows that her catalogue is quite juvenile and i dont know how long she could keep making such music. And many stars cant make successful transition from such bubble gum pop.

Honestly, her newer music is not that good. I think she needs to really switch it up or just give it up. She’s good at hosting, has a fun personality, and can keep doing that.

I love katy’s music when she sang about love. And also that last song “riding in hawaii”! It’s so hard for artists to reinvent themselves. I font know how madonna did it – she is the QUEEEN. I listened to Beyonce new album, im really not into it. She wants to do something different. And Taylor Swift, i love her cute country music and the first pop songs, but her songs now dont appeal to me. Justin bieber keeps doing new music, and dont want to like the songs, but i keep singing the lyrics, why? lol A lot of them just change with time and so do we. Nothing wrong at all, it’s just the way it is.

I agree, a couple of her songs are fun, but it’s not the sort of thing to sustain a lifelong music career, IMO. She’s been smart to diversify.
Good for her for acknowledging the nanny and all the help they have.

I grew up on punk and alternative, but I love a melody. She’s a good songwriter. Maybe her stuff isn’t to everyone’s tastes, but she has written some anthem-level women’s empowering songs that are inspiring to lots of girls. I say give credit where credit is due.

Yeah I was struck by how much her Vegas show was a return to the cartoony vibe from her early career. Like she tried to evolve musically, it wasn’t as successful, so she said “Alright here are the wacky costumes and gags again.” $$$$

I like katy for being straight forward and recognizing her cibling and nanny as part of her team. It take someone with confidence to say that and not the usual celebrity bs. I thought it was selfish for orlando to be just taping in and out, but she meant “REALLY taps in” which is totally different.

I was a stay at home mom for years and would have pt sitters to lend a hand, and my parents lived close by and would help. (Mr. Contrary is a great dad but traveled for work about 75% of the time.) I never get why people are so resistant to admitting they use help. Raising kids is tough!

    • Unicorn with a Sweet Tooth says:

Whenever celebs say they have no form of help,it feels akin to those that say they don’t work out or diet–but just run around after their kids. Garbage.

  4. Unicorn with a Sweet Tooth says:

I love, love, LOVE that she mentioned the nanny. I get so tired of reading these interviews with celebs who claim no outside help, no nannies, just them being “hands on.” It’s absurd.

If I could do it, I would. I’d wager having help can even make them better parents (if done right– none of that Camille Grammer nonsense). Raising tiny humans is tough and help is appreciated and needed in all forms.

  5. Coco says:

I like that she mentions both her sister and nanny help them. To many celebrities act above it all by saying they do have help, but find out that there parent/parents have quite their jobs and moved in to help raise their kids.

  6. Tara says:

I recall reading that she does not get along with her parents. Are they cut off from her and not helping too, then?

  7. jferber says:

Tara, I believe her parents were religious cultists or something of that nature. She obviously broke away and maybe the relationship is severed. I really don’t know.
