Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix in ‘Joker: Folie á Deux’

This news was rumored and confirmed in June, but now Lady Gaga is confirming it herself. Gaga will star in Joker 2: Folie à Deux alongside Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix won the Oscar for playing a bummer incel version of Joker in the 2019 “origin story” film. Joker was not only critically acclaimed (ugh), it was a huge financial success, crossing the billion-dollar mark at the domestic and international box office. People just love it when violent white guys get sympathetic origin stories! Anyway, Gaga will apparently play Harley Quinn?

Lady Gaga confirmed her casting in “Joker 2” by posting a musical teaser to social media. The sequel, officially titled “Joker: Folie à Deux,” will star Gaga opposite Joaquin Phoenix, returning to the role of Joker after winning the Oscar for best actor thanks to his performance in the 2019 first installment. The teaser is set to “Cheek to Cheek,” which Gaga has famously covered in her music career alongside Tony Bennett.

Variety reported in June that Gaga was circling the role of Harley Quinn in the upcoming “Joker” sequel, which is set to be a musical. Director Todd Phillips posted the screenplay’s cover to Instagram on June 7, revealing the “Folie à Deux” subtitle. The phrase refers to a shared delusional disorder, and Joker’s only real companion — other than Batman, anyway — has been Harley, a character first created for “Batman: The Animated Series” in the early 1990s. The teaser, however, does not outright confirm Gaga is playing Harley.

What a mess. Like, do I think that Gaga could pull off some version of Harley Quinn? Yes, probably. Do I also think she should not attempt it? Also yes. I just now realized that when Gaga promotes this, we’re going to hear wall-to-wall stories about how she traumatized herself to get into character and she checked into an asylum and on and on. Plus, I just don’t see Joaquin and Gaga working well together.

    Yuck. No thank you.

I feel like she’s going to drop out of this. She’s on a massive tour right now and is allegedly prepping her latest album. The tour’s been getting good reviews and selling really well, so I suspect her record label will be pushing that newest album, too. She’s also been saying in the media for a while that she wants to have a kid. These sort of comic book films have lengthy productions, and it’s hard to see how she’ll make it work.

My guess is WB dropped this news because they wanted to distract from the HBOMax mess. That said, if she does it, I doubt the press tour will be so chaotic. She dialed it way down in the end-I suspect someone talked to her.

She really goes over bored with tortured artist routine, totally sucks the fun out of it.

I’m torn, because while she’s obviously perfectly cast for the role, I really liked what Margot Robbie did with the role and didn’t want a “new” Harley Quinn so soon, especially because I feel Robbie’s excellent portrayal didn’t get due credit yet and GaGa’s portrayal will be all anyone talks about going forward. That said, Joker is set in a slightly more serious, less comic-book version of the DCEU, so it makes sense not to use the same Harley in both.

  5. Case says:

There’s so much yuck about this. The first Joker was fine but thought it was way deeper and more serious than it actually was. Similarly, Gaga as an actor is fine, but thinks the job is way deeper and more serious than it actually is.

So far, I haven’t really been impressed with Gaga’s acting (contrary to popular opinion, I thought she was downright bad in Gucci). Kinda wish, as the article said, she just wouldn’t even attempt this.

  6. Eurydice says:

I’m stuck on the part about it being a musical (which is different from a movie that has a song or two). It’s hard for me to imagine how it wouldn’t be ridiculous.

If Gaga is Harley Quinn, my guess is we will see an origin story when she meets the Joker.

She would more so play Dr. Harleen Quinzel, psychiatrist in Arkham Asylum and the storyline is her building a relationship with the Joker (through song no less!). Although I’m guessing we’d also see some transformation into the fully realized villain Harley Quinn.

This is gonna be the ultimate method battle.
I wish Celebrity Death Match (yes I’m old) was still on.

  9. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Ugh, I’m not looking forward to Gaga’s exhausting interviews.

  10. Seraphina says:

I have never been GaaGaa for Gaga. But she was excellent in House of Gucci. She stole the show and then some. But I’m
Not digging this role. I too get it- darker movie. But Margot will be #1 Harley for me.

  11. Sasha says:

I loved his acting and the original Movie. I refused to watch it forever because of what I feared it contributed to society. I watch Stranger Things, and nobody is talking about how they didn’t need the kids to use guns in the finale

  12. Mila says:

    Nooooo leave it alone!

  13. Owlsyn (Ableism is Not Cool) says:

I love Lady Gaga as a musician and I thought she did well in what I’ve seen her in, acting wise. I am not anti-Gagist.

I like Joaquin Phoenix, I’m a big fan of Johnny Cash and thought he did justice to that. I think he’s talented.

But I am already exhausted by the idea of this film and I just found out about it. Like I am bone weary. I don’t want to read endless Gaga stories as she self flagellates in pursuit of respect as an actress. I don’t want to live through anymore Facebook memes or inspo quotes for the Hot Topic set who think Joker is a life changing experience that will guide their entire life.

Just, get off my lawn with all this. I’m old and I’m too tired for this nonsense.

Walk the line is one of my fav movies ever! Joaquin was absolutely amazing in that movie! I feel like the first movie ended perfectly and they should leave it alone? Idk
