Will Duchess Meghan go to NYC next week for Serena Williams’ retirement?

People have been listening to and absorbing the Duchess of Sussex’s first Archetypes podcast episode, The Misconception of Ambition with Serena Williams. It was nice to listen to because I’m such a big Serena fan, and it was great to hear Serena and Meghan talking as friends about real sh-t, dealing with bias, being affected by racism and plain unfairness, and being moms. Serena actually told a story about how Olympia broke her wrist the night before Serena had to play a match at the French Open. That led to Meghan’s story about Archie and the fire in his nursery, and the larger point of “you don’t know what people are going through, so be kind.”

What’s also interesting about having Serena as the first guest is that Serena has dealt with a lot more than “being called ambitious.” Meghan raises that point, as does Serena. They both talk about the double-standards that have plagued Serena throughout her career, where she’s spoken about as someone “emotional,” “too aggressive,” having a “meltdown” or, as always, “angry.” Whereas male tennis players are called passionate, dedicated, tough, strong, etc for doing the exact same things. I keep waiting for a larger reckoning on how Serena has been treated throughout her career and the language that has been used about her, but it hasn’t really happened yet.

At one point in the pod, they’re talking about how Serena will play her last professional match(s), there’s a conversation about how Meghan and Serena are going to get a drink together after Serena’s final match. Meghan said, “Yeah, we’re going to have fun. We’ll make sure you get a good one.” Serena said: “To the bar– to the bar. That’s something to do afterwards. I’m just going out because I can never drink. Have a glass of Champagne. Maybe I’ll just do some twirls right on out of the stadium.” So… is Meghan headed to New York next week for Serena’s farewell? I think she might be.

I am sure Serenas final matches especially US Open will be packed with mega stars.

    • Chloe says:

When is her first match of the us open?

      • liz says:

The draw hasn’t been announced and it will not be until qualifiers are finished later this week.

It’s widely assumed that Serena will play on Ashe for the first match of the first night session (the “official” start to the Open, despite the fact that the matches actually start at 11am that day).

  2. ChewieNYC says:

I think she and Harry will both go. If your good friend was playing their last game before retirement you would for sure be there to celebrate them in the end.

  3. MsIam says:

That’s the impression I got, that they are planning a meet up in New York. If so, then I hope they have a blast! One thing that I wish they had a chance to talk about was the brouhaha about the baby shower. I know Serena was a big part of that and it must have hurt her heart to see how such a beautiful gesture was treated by the press. But I guess Meghan wanted the focus to be on Serena and her experiences and not a rehash of the past.

  4. Southern Fried says:

I thought the same as they talked and I bet Harry will go too. I know I’ll be in tears watching Serena’s last game but also very excited about what she does next. What a gift she is. I’d watch a podcast of famous close friends talking for sure. In the meantime I’m looking forward to Archetypes. Very curious to see the Mariah episode.

    • Becks1 says:

I am interested in that one as well, it will have a totally different vibe from this one and I think its a good pivot after starting with Serena, one of her closest friends, to Mariah, who as far as we know, Meghan doesn’t really know (she may have met her but they don’t appear to be close or anything).

      • The Old Chick says:

I’m crazy excited for Mariah! I really hope she brings it because her history is a lot! She really had so much to deal with. She’s very talented.

    • Jais says:

Yeah, I’m really excited about her podcast with Mariah. She has such a dry humor.

  5. SussexWatcher says:

That was my first thought when I listened to the podcast. I really hope both Meghan and Harry attend (and maybe even Archie if Olympia is there…can you imagine those 2 cuties together?! Although I don’t actually think they’d bring Archie out in public like that.).

I have a similar story about job versus endangered kid, though not as bad as theirs. The first time I was ever unavailable for my baby was when my boss made me do a technically unnecessary 3 hour Zoom demonstration of my work before letting me finish my case for promotion. This is a profession where you only get your one big shot for promotion, and if you lose at that point, you basically have to leave the industry…and start over after 10 years of education, plus 6 years of practice. Anyway, in the event, the baby was so distressed I was gone he rolled himself out of the bed my husband was cuddling him in during a colic episode … and had to go to the emergency room for a suspected concussion. I had a short break in my Zoom and went downstairs to say hi, only to find my terrified husband getting ready for the hospital and the baby red and screaming…. I had to go back up and finish my presentation instead of to the hospital because my boss said it was essential for her to move my case forward. Well, no wonder the observer’s report was pretty unsupportive…still got promoted but am still mad about it!

    • VoominVava says:

wow. That must have been so scary and distressing! Newborns are so stressful. I’m glad your hubby was able to take care of the situation.

  7. Becks1 says:

Yeah I definitely think she’s going. I think she’s going to want to be there for Serena’s last match and obviously you don’t know when that will happen during the tournament. I loved the picture Serena posted of Meghan, Olympia and her at the US Open in 2019.

  8. C-Shell says:

I hung on their every word of that podcast. It was candid, a little raw at times, but just their lived experiences. I think most women can relate to some part of the conversation, if not all of it — not many of us are icons. The rats will characterize it as whining or bashing thus PROVING THE POINT of the pod with every vitriolic comment. I’m looking forward to the entire series.

Watching Serena at the US Open will be must see! I hope Meghan’s there 🤩

    • Lorelei says:

Hopefully, if the podcast becomes long-running (fingers crossed!), Serena will be back in the future. I really enjoyed listening to them just talking casually. The wish list of possible guests is endless!

And I also got the impression Meghan is planning to be there for Serena’s last match. It seems like they’re each such good friends to the other.

It was so nice to, for the first time in a while, have something not-horrifying to focus on yesterday.

      • aftershocks says:

^^ Yep, early in the podcast, Meg spoke about meeting Serena for the first time. Apparently, Serena approached Meghan, not the other way around. I’m curious about that because they didn’t provide further details. Meg said she thought Serena was heading toward her to speak with someone else. If that was before 2011, then Meg would not have been famous for Suits yet. Did Serena simply wish to befriend Meghan from simply noticing her, or did Serena have prior knowledge of who Meghan was?

I wonder b/c at that point ( and even later after M’s Suits success), Serena was the more famous and successful star on a global scale. Meghan had success on a smaller scale. As well, before Suits, Meghan was a striving actor, gorgeous and still her wonderful self, but she had yet to achieve outsized success in her industry or via her own merit.

Why I mention this is because it seems to point out even moreso how they bonded on a pure friendship and female interests in common level. Meghan once mentioned on The Tig how she and Serena recognized similar interests in each other from the beginning. Meg’s long ago quote about herself and Serena still resonates: “Serena and I are both endlessly ambitious, and we always like to exceed the expectations of others.”

  9. girl_ninja says:

I hope that she does. And I hope that they all go as a family. Maybe even Mama Doria? It would be wonderful for them all to cheer Serena on at her last U.S. Open.

  10. Jais says:

Am sad Serena is retiring but excited to see everything she’s going to do next.

  11. Amy Bee says:

I haven’t listened yet but the feedback both positive and negative has been quite enjoyable. As to whether Meghan goes to NY, maybe. I wouldn’t be surprised if she does go next week.

  12. The Old Chick says:

I heard it that way too. So looking forward to the celebration of her career. Btw the derangers on twitter are still insisting they’re not friends and both the Duchess and Serena are lying. The term derangers really does fit. They’re insane.

    • aquarius64 says:

The anti Meghan brigade are claiming Meghan and Serena are lying because they are holding on to Tom Bower’s screed about the friendship in his hit piece on Meghan. I would like to see the numbers on this podcast. If they’re through the roof as I believe, it shows the public at large do not believe the rota rats, royal experts, talking heads, disgruntled Markles, and “journalists” out to make a buck off Meghan.

      • Lorelei says:

I saw some maniacs on Twitter saying that the whole thing must be fake because on the podcast, Serena said her daughter is four, and one comment was something like, “Well, I’m not stupid, clearly that’s not a four-year-old child in that photo!”

FFS. Serena never claimed the photo was taken the day the podcast was recorded. What does that even have to do with anything. These people are just so consumed with irrational hatred, they look for any detail to pick apart in order to “prove” something. And I guess this gives them some sort of self-satisfaction? What sad little lives they must lead.

Deranged indeed (and I mean that literally!).

  13. BUBS says:

We’ll always be here for you, Serena…even off the court…our love and support will never end. Thank you for the greatest era.
PS: I think Meghan and Harry will both be there for her last time on court.

  14. Julia K says:

I’ve had to quit scanning other sites. The outright lies that get repeated and then exagerated are unbelievable. The amount of hate is toxic and I feel sickened after reading it, so I’m done. It’s no wonder that people believe this sht; if you throw enough mud at a wall, some will stick.

  15. Harla A Brazen Hussy says:

Aren’t Meghan and Harry scheduled to be in the UK and Germany during the Open?

    • MsIam says:

They are due in the UK the following week. Maybe they can make a pit stop in NYC on the way over.

    • Eurydice says:

The Open is happening right now – maybe they’ll see her in the earlier rounds. For the women, the quarter-finals are on the 6th, the semi-finals are on the 8th and the finals on the 10th.

  16. taris says:

beside the point, but i just wanted to say: i’m actually from zimbabwe, so it kinda nice to hear that archie’s nanny was zimbabwean.
    love h+m even more now…

  17. molly says:

The tricky thing about a single elimination tournament is that you never know when someone’s “Last Match” is going to be. Serena’s been pretty up and down recently. She may get eliminated (or injured) in the first round, or she may win the whole thing. (Fingers crossed!!)

August 31st to September 10th would have been a long time to just hang out on the other side of the country, but the timing DOES work out to make a stop on their way to the UK for their September 5th appearance.

Hopefully Serena makes it out of the first couple rounds so they can see her on September 2nd, and hopefully that’s NOT her last match.

    • Lorelei says:

I really hope she wins her last one, too! Her career is insanely impressive no matter what, but I hope she’s able to go out on a high note

  18. phlyfiremama says:

I would LOVE to hear/see Amal Alamuddin-Clooney on the Podcast!! That would also be amazing. *throws that out to the universe
I hope that Meghan & Serena have an AWESOME time, and that Serena wins whatever remaining matches are still to come. ❤️
