Seward: Duchess Meghan’s claims of media racism are ‘unsubstantiated’

In their rush to call the Duchess of Sussex a liar, the British media has thrown caution to the wind. In Meghan’s The Cut profile, she spoke about the convoluted entanglement between the monarchy and the British media, in addition to loss of control and autonomy when it came to simply doing her own social media. She would have liked to have her own royal Instagram where she could publish family photos whenever she wanted. Instead, everything had to go through the Royal Rota first. Meghan said, in part: “There’s literally a structure by which if you want to release photos of your child, as a member of the family, you first have to give them to the Royal Rota. Why would I give the very people that are calling my children the n-word a photo of my child before I can share it with the people that love my child?”

Meghan said that with her whole chest too – she knows that the press covering her was and is racist as hell. She saw the “exotic DNA” and “straight out of Compton” headlines. She heard about the BBC employee comparing her son to a monkey. She knew that the immediate reaction to her mere existence was flatly racist. But please, allow a white woman to condescendingly tell Meghan that her claims are “unsubstantiated.”

Meghan Markle has been blasted after apparently suggesting the British press called her children the n-word. It’s unclear who Meghan was referring to when she said “people”.

Royal experts were quick to question Meghan’s inference, with Royal Editor Ingrid Seward saying: “She appears to make an unsubstantiated claim that the British press used the n-word to describe her children. An interviewer worth her salt would have fact checked that and it is something which never happened.”

But speaking of her interview yesterday, Ingrid Seward said Meghan is “economical with the truth when it suits her,” adding the facts should be backed up. She said: “It appears to me that neither of them [Harry and Meghan] are prepared to accept the blame for anything.”

[From The Sun]

This is curious to me. While we have a plethora of evidence that the royal press pack was and is racist AF, we actually don’t have receipts that certain Rota members specifically used the N-word. I wonder if Meghan has receipts? It wouldn’t surprise me if she does. It also wouldn’t surprise me if Meghan simply overheard journalists saying that sh-t, or she heard about it second-hand. In any case, it’s strange that Ingrid Seward or any royal commentator is trying to pick at this particular thread, given the receipts which are already in the public sphere. A major Daily Mail columnist literally just referred to Meghan as a “barking mutt” last week.

Oh, here we go with the “the RF isn’t racist” when it’s glaringly obvious they are, and don’t even try to hide it. “It’s all in Meghan’s head!” The RF and their amateur sycophants are nauseating. Just no words for how vile these people really are.

    • mia girl says:

For god’s sake, Princess Michael of Kent trolled/wore a racist brooch to the first Queen’s Christmas Lunch that Meghan attended! Like they haven’t hidden their racism.

And later Kent in her apology said… omg I wore many times before, “without controversy”. Yes because before she was around other racist people!

    • Becks1 says:

“very much not a racist” press…..

    • MakeEverydayCount says:

I love how Meghan is dropping these truth nuggets out there and the British Media becomes UNHINGED.

      • Formerly Lithe says:

Not only that but go out of their way to put on a little pantomime to support what she’s saying.

    • KATHLEEN WILLIAMS says:

How many times have they used the N word without saying the N word? How many times have they shown Archie as a golliwog among the other royal children?

  2. Amy Bee says:

I have no doubt Meghan overheard comments from the press pack. At the end she started doing a lot more private engagements and I remember one of the Royal correspondents complaining that the press wasn’t invited to some of her events. The press conveniently forgets that Harry issued a statement calling out the racism in the press.

    • karkopolo says:

Oh yeah. I have no doubt someone–likely more than one of them–called Archie the n-word. They are all acting like if it isn’t in print on their websites or in clips from their shows, it didn’t happen. Nah fam, we know the RF and the rota are in contact beyond what’s printed in the press. They don’t just magically show up at events or write stories from “palace sources” without any communication between them, after all. Just like I have no doubt there are so many microaggressions, and frankly macro aggressions, that Meghan dealt with from the family members themselves that we may never know about.

  3. Rapunzel says:

They said she was straight outta Compton and depicted her son as a chimp! Seward obviously doesn’t understand what unsubstantiated means.

    • BeanieBean says:

My favorite written bit of lunacy was that Meghan’s like of avocado toast was causing drought & narcotrafficante gang wars.

  4. Rapunzel says:

They literally depicted her child as a chimp! Like, wtf is this gaslighting?

  5. ThatsNotOkay says:

At least one said “Negro” in texts and had to defend herself on TV. But that’s not the n-word, so the Rota wants to know who’s ratted them out in their private WhatsApp group, I’m sure. Meghan knows the difference between the two words, though they’re both disgusting attacks, only one is the n-word. She made the distinction so she has proof. C-Word didn’t say it didn’t happen, she’s asking, “Who told you?”

    • Agreatreckoning says:

Yup. Meghan did not say it was written in the press or said on air. Just that the children were called that by people that they were suppose to share pictures of their children with first.. due to protocol. the RR’s.

A favorite movie of mine with Matthew Modine-What the Deaf Man Heard. Love the acting cast. Another MM! MM’s character was believed to be deaf/mute. He wasn’t. His character pretty much knew everyone’s secrets in town because they spoke freely around him believing what they said couldn’t be heard. I have no doubt members of the BM/RR’s fell into the same type of situation. Due to their racism and arrogance. The Fleet Streeters, hypothetically, could have been easily recorded during after work drinks.imo

LOL, Ingrid. Are you really suggesting the interviewer would have received an honest answer by your ilk if they were asked if they referred to H&M’s children as the n word? Good lord. Talk about being ‘economical with the truth’. Isn’t that how RR’s are paid?

  6. Colby says:

Seriously f*ck these people so much.
Even if they didn’t call him the n word, they called her son a monkey. That is the same thing as far as I’m concerned.

  7. YeahRight says:

We have plenty of evidence of the unhinged racist crap they said about her. I’m sure they said it especially around the time they was highly upset that Harry and Meghan wouldn’t show Archie right away. She probably do have evidence of it or it could be just hyperbole to emphasize the level of crap she had to deal with to the journalist who was interviewing her.

  8. MsIam says:

They tried to discredit Meghan when she talked about the fire incident and how the UK officials didn’t want that story out there. You see how that turned out. And notice how Ingrid says “she appears to make an unsubstantiated claim”. How would Ingrid know what was said or what Meghan knew? They are gonna find out, all of them.

    • B says:

@MsIam the goal has always been to discredit Meghan and I think to achieve their aim the british press will just claim everything she says is a lie. But as you pointed out it doesn’t work because other REAL journalist will just check the story like South Africa media did with the nursery fire story. As we speak people on twitter are sharing screen shots of racist headlines and proving Ingrid is a liar. Online conversation is about why Meghan is being attacked with lies. People who were unaware of what happened on salt island are learning and weighing in and its not a good look for the press. The more they attack Meghan’s credibility the more they damage their own. Its beautiful to see the reversal

  9. C-Shell says:

    I’m not sure,

“ An interviewer worth her salt would have fact checked that and it is something which never happened.”

Is she saying that the fact checking never happened, or that the British press never used the n-word in reference to Archie (or Meghan, for that matter)? Whatever. She doesn’t know shit about what the individual 🐀🐀🐀 in the RR we’re saying. I don’t doubt for an instant that Meghan knows that the n-word was used, but even if she doesn’t have undeniable receipts of that, there are a plethora of examples of blatant racism used against Archie. Her point is dead on.

    • ABritGuest says:

Ingrid Seward who was one of those people that was tricked into commenting on the Oprah interview before it aired wants to talk about fact checking?! Mkay

The disdain for Meghan has been open. There was that royal baby chimp tweet. Royal rota correspondents openly engaged with Meghan hate accounts on SM &joked that baby Sussex would be referred to as frogspawn.

When he was born tabloids printed articles with psychics saying Archie would be manipulative & would scare his father. When Meghan & Harry did their final engagements a correspondent who isn’t usually on the royal beat said that the rota were discussing Meghan in an awful misogynistic manner. I don’t doubt Meghan & her kids have been referred to using slurs

    • anne says:

“It appears to me that neither of them [Harry and Meghan] are prepared to accept the blame for anything.”

What exactly should they be ‘accepting the blame’ for, Ingrid? Should Harry & Meghan accept the blame for his family, the RR, and other public figures saying and writing racist things about her and their son?

      • Agreatreckoning says:

Great question @anne. Are the Sussexes suppose to accept the blame for having a work ethic? Are they suppose to accept the blame their charisma created a seething jealousy from the Unroyals? Are they suppose to accept the blame that Prince Harry married a WOC and were globally popular and accepted by non royalists? When 72 MP’s recognized the racist headlines by the British Media towards Meghan, it wasn’t Meghan or H&M playing victims, it was a recognition of a BM/UK problem.

  10. Flower says:

As a Brit I will say this – these RR’s and ‘journalists’ are masters of subterfuge and gas-lighting.

They’re also incredibly ignorant and grew up during a time when racism was seen in more overt terms i.e. burning crosses, the N-Word ect. And even when they’re educated about their racism, they see it as just a bit of ‘harmless casual racism’ as one of the anchors of Loose Women referred to it.

Having lived with and worked with these clowns, I think they genuinely believe that their behaviours are not racist but rather ‘just bants’ and that Meghan should just take it on the chin and ‘not make a fuss’. I will even go as far as to say that they found Meghan’s treatment perfectly acceptable as she is a public person.

There is no getting away from it, Brits are incredibly racist (as are Americans, Australians ect). Rather we now live in a time where calling out racism is the crime. Gas-lighting people in this way in their only hope of trying to get the Genie back into the bottle.

Meghan is not saying anything revolutionary, rather it’s the reach and the platform she has on networks such as spotify. The fact that she has over-taken Joe Rogan in English speaking countries where Murdoch is waging his culture war also has them shook.

A simple headline, tweet or Insta post about Meghan generates clicks REGARDLESS of the subject matter. I believe that Meghan has understood this and has decided to stop giving a sh!t what the haters think. She is pushing ahead full throttle and for that I thank her for this public service. Dark skin black women talk about colourism in pod-casts all day long but their podcasts do not get this level of exposure. Whereas Meghan speaking about it widens the debate – this is exactly the opposite of what is happening in the UK/ US where governing bodies are trying to ban say discussions around CRT. This is why the RW view Meghan as being so dangerous because the younger generation are actually interested in what she has to say. That kind of star-power is not quantifiable.

That is power that the tabloids, rags and sh!tty networks cannot temper no matter how hard they try.

This will end horribly for the Royal Family and the Rota and I am glad to take my front row seat.

    • Jais says:

Thank you. This is really well said. Especially the part about Meghan just speaking up in this way, despite all the abuse, is a public service. She is not letting people shy away from important racist and sexist injustice.

    • kelleybelle says:

Except … what exactly is “harmless casual racism?”

    • Rapunzel says:

Flowet- the Joe Rogan stuff is significant. Her overtaking him is a sign that the right is losing in the culture wars. With Roe falling this year, Americans in particular are getting tired of conservative bullshit.

This scares the crap outta the conservative status quo of these papers. They fear they will be forced to change to keep up. That’s why the Fail is always telling stories about how bad it is to be “woke”

  11. Lorelei says:

These fcking people are so tiresome. Aren’t *they* sick of spending their entire lives trashing Meghan? This has been going on for six years; it’s exhausting. It is crystal clear to anyone who has been paying attention that the UK press and the ROTA in particular are absolutely racist, and that much of their racist bile is aimed at Meghan and has been for years.

It’s likely that Meghan has receipts we’re unaware of, but even if not, it’s not as if it’s a huge leap to believe that one or more of them DID use that word to describe Archie (and probably Meghan). FFS

    • Eurydice says:

They’re not sick of what makes them pantloads of money. Hating Meghan is an industry and the world’s easiest work. Every day, they can write whatever crap they want and somebody will pay for it. And it doesn’t matter if Meghan has receipts, they’ll just move on to some other bit of hatred. The best H&M can do is profit off their own stories instead of letting the tabloids have it all.

  12. The Duchess says:

Archie was compared to a monkey by a prominent BBC Radio DJ not even a few hours after he was born and not ONE royal family member condemned it. So again, how much more evidence does Meghan actually need?

These idiots keep on proving their foolishness.

  13. Becks1 says:

We know what they said about her in public. Straight outta compton, “niggling worry”, comparing Archie to a chimp, (didnt someone call her uppity on a morning show once?) and that’s not even getting into the dog whistles constantly used about her.

I can only imagine what they said about her and the children in private.

    • Lusaka mummy says:

      Becks

On the front cover of Daily Mail they had Archie, Meghan and Harry and the headline read ‘Nappy New Year’. I can’t pinpoint which new year it was. The BM is disgusting.

  14. Lexistential says:

I am so sick of these people defending themselves and each other like the racist clique they are. They are a sick bunch of propagandists. The sheer belief they have in their right to define the Sussexes (as they do for the rest of the BRF) is astonishing and desperate. They have also gotten so downright predictable that anytime Meghan or Harry do anything, these people will bleat and “blah blah blah protocol, blah blah not racist, blah blah sources say they’re lying, blah blah we’re not culpable, blah blah THE QUEEN.”

I am so glad Harry and Meghan are no longer beholden to these people and can start holding their abusiveness to account. I hope Harry outs them with his book. (And good luck to the rest of the BRF. Chuck and Cams are old and have lived through this, but WillNot, Cannot, and kids have the rest of their lives to go.)

  15. aquarius64 says:

Seward knows she couldn’t repeat this foolishness on US media because the American press (except Fox News) would call them out.

  16. Zapp Brannigan says:

    “niggling worry” headline
    “exotic blood” headline
    “straight outta Compton” headline
    “uppity” on morning television show
“throw them off the balcony” morning television show
“all white on the night” headline when Meghan didn’t attend some function that Kate and Camilla were at.
Comparing baby to a chimp within hours of his birth, that DJ was sacked then quietly rehired a few weeks later
That brooch nonsense with that Duchess Micheal
Accused of links to terrorism by eating avocado on toast
Again links to terrorism by organizing a cookbook for women in need in Grenfell London
Links to Saudi terrorism and murdered journalist by wearing earrings the palace gave her to wear.

But no burning crosses on the front lawn so all is A-Okay!

  18. MsIam says:

I believe that some of this was uncovered in her lawsuit against the Fail. Her lawyers requested emails and communications and that’s how they found out about Jones’ boyfriend selling info. I believe there may be more about this in Harry’s book. Stay tuned. And I think its interesting they send Ingrid out to be the spokesperson on this one but the Fail who comments on everything Meghan is silent.

  19. ML says:

About appearing to have made an unsubstantiated claim: BEFORE the Oprah interview with Meghan and Harry, Ingrid gave an interview to YouTubers stating that Meghan had been acting. Again prior to the interview even taking place. Weird that Ingrid Seward of all people believes that “an interviewer worth her salt would have fact checked that” and that she of all people is saying that it never took place.

  20. molly says:

Even if the words were never typed by the royal rota professionals, the comment section on their articles is racist AF. The fact that places like the Daily Mail allow (and encourage) the hatred for clicks and engagement, it makes them just as culpable for whatever is posted under their articles.

  21. windyriver says:

“She appears to make an unsubstantiated claim…”

“An interviewer worth her salt would have fact checked that…”

Reminder, this is Ingrid Seward, who was one of the gang of four (including Fitzwilliams and both Arbiters) who sat for an interview, on tape, giving their reactions to Oprah’s Harry & Meghan program – which hadn’t been broadcast yet.

A tad ironic to hear her commenting so nobly about false claims and fact checking…

    • QuiteContrary says:

Ingrid Seward should have fact-checked this statement: “It appears to me that neither of them [Harry and Meghan] are prepared to accept the blame for anything.”
When has this happened, Ingrid? In what instances did Harry and Meghan refuse to accept the blame? For what, pray tell?
It appears Seward is not “worth her salt.”

  22. Janice Hill says:

It wouldn’t surprise me if someone did call little Archie the n-word. But the words we know about are bad enough. Such fear and hatred! I’m left shaking with fury over this one.

    • Well Wisher says:

Russell Meyers from the daily mirror is on tape suggesting glibly that Archie can become “a black cab driver”.
      One indication of Archie’s “place”.

      • Agreatreckoning says:

Technically, he tweeted it. Then tried to backtrack. He knew what he said. He knew what was meant by his words. If he meant otherwise, Myers would have capitalzed the B & C. Pisha to the commentators trying to absolve Myers. Enabling is more like it.
        https://twitter.com/rjmyers/status/1126164028542390273

Now, I fully believe, that Richard Palmer calling the Cambridges ‘a couple of crackers’, was some truly accurate sh*t. That tweet was very LOL. In a truthful way. I will buy into that he didn’t know what he was saying. Still some spot on sh*t.

  23. Over it says:

Yes Ingrid, you crusty white racist, why don’t you sit there and tell a woman of color one more time how she doesn’t know when she and her children are being racially abused. Just do all of us black peoples a favor and F right off the planet.

  24. Ace says:

Considering what we know about Meghan, how careful she is with what she says and how she likes to keep receipts, I absolutely believe she knows at least one person in the BM called her son the n-word.

Maybe she overheard it, maybe there were whatsapp caps (which happens quite a bit in UK politics), maybe there was some other way, but she did find out and I expect her to be able to substantiate that claim so that’s another hint to the racists RR who will cry and cry and cry when their disgusting behaviour is made public so the whole world can see what garbage they are.

  25. Well Wisher says:

A quick reminder as to the initial reason for Brexit, it was a report from the EU special commission that the reporting in commercial newspapers were biased.

The owners instigated the referendum as Murdoch complained that no one in the EU would listen to him.

    And, here it is………..
No lessons learned. Even if Brexit leads to a failed state. The huge transferance of wealth due to inflation and high increases in energy bills. Raw sewage in the water.

How much personal wealth is required for one to be able to fcuk around without bearing none of the consequences?

    Interference from Murdoch without consequences.

Seward was told what to write. This is about the editor and publisher.

  26. L4Frimaire says:

Why are they even choosing to defend this? The Rota is racist, the press have said so many racist things about Meghan and her kids. How stupid do they think we are. This is what they do. The whole system is rotten but they try to pull out one phrase while we see their entire actions. Read the comments in KP Instagram or when SussexRoyal was up. That word and the c-word was widely circulated.

  27. BeanieBean says:

‘Fact-checked’, Ingrid? Was ‘Meghan made Kate’ cry fact-checked? And what, exactly, is it that Harry & Meghan should ‘accept the blame’ for? British racism is their fault?

  28. IngridSeaweed is a liar and a racist. Her blood boils because Meghan is winning. Stay seething mad…high blood for you.

  29. Mrs.Krabapple says:

I’m not sure if the royal family realizes that outside of the royal sycophants and racist brits, everyone else can see how badly Meghan was treated and the doubling down of abuse towards her makes the royals look very, very bad. Let me rephrase that — it makes them look very, very racist.

  30. Lurker25 says:

We know Meghan keeps receipts. She specifically said n-word. I think two possibilities:
    1. Tabloid photo/videographers are known to rile up their subjects, goading them just to get angry photo or violent behavior on tape. I wonder if, in a less crowded setting where they thought they could get away with it, someone actually asked her something like, “when will you show us your n-word baby?” They were PISSED that they weren’t allowed at the first photo call, remember? And that baby feet shot was on Sussex insta. They were desperate to get pics of Archie. So I wonder if they thought why not get angry black mom photo at least?

    2. Screenshot. We know staff leaked to press. I bet there’s a screenshot of an exchange with “n-word baby” in it.

I bet she heard/saw the n-word used about her, too. And I bet when she heard it while an active RF member, she was told to suck it up don’t complain we all go through it. Hence the “difference between rude and racist” comment to Oprah. She’s an actress who dealt with a lot. She’s got thick skin. I think it was really that bad and more obvious than we even know. And that’s why both M&H keep hinting that “if you only know what I know” … Our heads would explode.

    • SenseOfTheAbsurd says:

We can see how disingenuous this desiccated bitch is being. Meghan states that members of the rota referred to the kids using that word. Ingrid denies that the word was openly and directly used in print. Which is technically true (for mainstream media at least), but also irrelevant, because that isn’t the accusation Meghan made.

Has always been my assumption that they left the country because the children would be targeted with racist bullying and abuse, and wanted Archie out of there before he was old enough to hear or understand.

  31. TheOriginalMia says:

They think they can gaslight Meghan and the world. Please. Give me a break. Omid Scobie has already revealed that the press pack would say the most misogynist and racist things about Meghan in his presence before realizing he was a minority as well.

  32. TeamAwesome says:

Omid was officially in the Royal Rota at that time, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there were receipts. He’s probably heard many things, and might even still have the group text to prove it.

  33. equality says:

“Economical with the truth when it suits her.” Not “prepared to accept the blame for anything.” I think she is describing the BM here.

  34. MikeB says:

When did the tabloids ever check their facts? Would Seward prefer that Meghan refer to the monkey cartoon or the frogspawn comment or the constant stories about how Meghan cradled her stomach? What exactly, in Sewards mind, is racism?

  35. W says:

The same Ingrid Seward who describes white royal women as “english roses”? Miss Seward should be the last person to denounce any evidence of racism against Meghan and her children when she herself said she thought Harry was going to marry an english rose.

  36. Saucy&Sassy says:

Unsubstantiated? Hmmm . . . Meghan wasn’t the only one who knew racist was racist. I just finished Sean Smith’s Meghan Misunderstood, and he collected a few of the articles that came out after H&M decided to leave. Let’s see, there was Hillary Mantel, “I do think abominable racism has been involved. People who say that’s got nothing to do with it — well, they need to check their privilege.” Afua Hirsch of the New York Times described their leaving as “two fingers up at the racism of the British establishment.” Then there was the letter signed by 72 MPs. Holly Lynch’s comment I think to Smith, “It doesn’t matter who you are, whether you’re a princess or a million miles from that, you shouldn’t be subjected to bullying or racism.”

We’re supposed to believe that there was not even one of the rrs who called Meghan and her baby the n-word? Right. I doubt there is any thinking person or credible news organization who would believe that.

  37. blunt talker says:

People know of the two men threatening Harry and Archie pretty much said the n-word-the man who went to prison threatening Harry and Meghan said as much-I have read that among the rota conversations were horrible when Meghan had an event to do-they called her everything but a child of God-no the UK press is very racist in my mind when you call an innocent baby a monkey a day or two after his birth-as if he won’t read that shit when he gets older-they need to accept their racism and decide whether to make corrections or continue with their abusive actions-most people who hear about Archie being called a monkey agree that is very racist indeed.

  38. Katya says:

I think Meghan was referring to the public in England and social media which would frequently have access to press photos before her friends/family might. After all they have had death threats and general racists smear as well as the children.
