Selena Gomez tells fans to stop trolling Hailey Bieber: ‘it’s not fair’

Last week, Hailey Bieber’s appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast, during which she breathed new life into old rumors by addressing them. She said there was no overlap between the “beginning” of her relationship with Justin and the end of his on/off relationship with Selena Gomez. And I only put “beginning” in quotes because Hailey and Justin had already dated another time previously so it wasn’t a beginning in the truest sense of the word. These kids are messy.

I think that Hailey probably shouldn’t have spoken about it because all it did was reignite the flames of fans for whom Selena/Justin are the OTP. Apparently, those fans started trolling Hailey and Selena made a vague TikTok Live expressing her disappointment at their behavior.

Selena Gomez is expressing disappointment in some of her fans’ behavior.

Earlier this week on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Hailey Bieber spoke about the harsh criticism she receives from some of Gomez’s fans for her relationship with her now-husband, singer Justin Bieber. Gomez and Justin Bieber dated on and off for years before calling it quits just months before he and the former Hailey Baldwin got engaged and married in 2018.

During her interview, the model said that she’s bullied online by Gomez fans who believe that she “stole” Justin Bieber from Gomez.

Those remarks only enraged Gomez’s fans — which prompted the singer and actor to address her followers’ wrath in a TikTok Live video Thursday.

“I think some of the things that I don’t even need to be aware of are just vile and disgusting, and it’s not fair, and no one, ever, should be spoken to in the manner that I’ve seen,” Gomez said in the video, which is no longer available on her account but was recorded and uploaded widely on social media. “All I have to say is, it’s incredibly ironic that I would release something that is all about kind words, ’cause that’s exactly what I want. That’s it.”

“If you support Rare,” Gomez continued, referencing her beauty line, “I cannot thank you enough, but know that you are also representing what it means. And that is: Words matter. Truly matter.”

[From Huff Post]

This whole situation is a bit silly and I’m finding Selena’s approach/statement hilarious. Hailey directly referenced the situation and then, predictably, the Selena/Justin shippers started in on her. And then Selena comes in with her milquetoast video, which is basically like “IYKYK, be kind, check out my makeup line.” Never miss an opportunity for product placement! It would be better and more mature if Selena had just said something more direct, but who among us is always better and more mature? I think both of these ladies should probably stop giving this love triangle so much oxygen, but I guess they’ve gotta get their drama somewhere. Honestly, they’ll probably always be irked by each other. Some people stop caring about their significant exes or (gasp) wish them well. And others are just a little salty forever. I really like Selena and want to see her with someone good, to match her great career. This whole millennial Brad/Angelina/Jen go-round thing is not it.

I learnt way more about this triangle than I ever wanted to know in recent days and all of it seems unncessarily exhausting. For what it’s worth, this isn’t the first time Selena told her fans to back off. She didn’t ask for the flames to be reignited, so I guess why she’s trying to give this as little oxygen as possible, while still keeping her hands clean.

Based on my own prior experience, I’d like to imagine her feelings on the matter are something to the effect of “overlap or no, either way I’m glad she took that loser off my hands, he’s your problem now babe” but I’m sure in reality the feeling is a little more complicated. Even if everyone is over it, having stans stirring shit up all the time must feel so strange, I can’t imagine.

She’s my favorite person in that triangle by a mile, but I do wish she would outright tell them to knock it off.

I just keep thinking “All of this over Justin Bieber?”…

Really hope this is the last we hear of it this triangle and they all move the F on. We is tired of it!

She should have been more direct, but I do find it interesting that female pop/rap stars-nearly all of them, from Bey to Selena to Gaga to Miley to Cardi-have told their stans to chill (notably Taylor has not) while men almost never do it…and yet reporters (journalists) seem to solely get mad at female pop stan bases and not the BTS stans or even the Harry Styles Stans…who are far worse imo and those stars have never told their stans to knock it off.

This isn’t directed at Celebitchy reporters, but something I’ve noticed about music journalists in general. And yes, this is the most boring triangle ever…Hailey shouldn’t have brought it up, though.

    • Beach Dreams says:

Taylor has long encouraged a parasocial/generally unhealthy dynamic with her fanbase. I don’t know if she still does this, but in the mid 2010s, she would frequently like obsequious posts from her fans on Tumblr. This encouraged them to go even more over the top with their posts in hopes of being acknowledged by her.

Something about Hailey has always set off my internal warning systems. I don’t think she’s a nice person deep down.

That being said, she absolutely did this to try to shift focus off trying to rebrand lip liner and gloss as “brownie glazed lips”. During Hispanic heritage month. And then chose a Latina (Selena) to do so. I don’t doubt there is a lot of past relationship trauma Selena is having to deal with now that hailey decided to bring this up again. It’s all privileged/rich white woman bull. Let sleeping dogs lie, Hailey.

    • Fortuona says:

So a Tejano got into it with a Bazileiros Americanos ?

Amother way to dispute Brazilans are Latinos ?

  6. SAS says:

Recently learned how insane the timeline was (bless you Celeb Deep Dives!). It seems crazy to me that Hailey agreed to talk on this. I do have a real soft spot for Selena though so it’s sucks for her that her fans are doing that shit.

  7. Chaine says:

How is it we are criticizing how Selena chooses to deal with the re-igniting of her fans’ anger when she is not the one that brought it up again? Hailey is an annoying person with no real talents of her own to keep anyone interested, but she wants to be the center of attention; that’s why she is trying to stir up controversy.

  8. Tiffany says:

Selena will be fine. She co stars and executive produces a Emmy nominated show and Hailey is a babysitter with a platinum card. Selena fine.

  9. Christine says:

I think at a certain point you can only do so much. She’s already told them to stop before. Hailey is the one who brought it up again – she could’ve said anything Selena is off limits in the interview but didn’t. Selena shouldn’t have to lecture her fans again and again when she’s not the one bringing drama.

  10. Digital Unicorn says:

For the life of me I can’t understand all this over him. Whenever I see his name I think of that time his bodyguard LIFTED him like a toddler out of a car.

  11. ME says:

Selena has a documentary coming out soon. I wonder if she addresses any of this on it? I guess we’ll see.

  12. Ash says:

Selena’s statement doesn’t sit right. It doesn’t feel like she’s being genuine at all. Hailey didn’t bring her up, she simply answered a question during an interview, since she’s getting harassed about it constantly.
I’m not surprised Selena turned it into a poorly executed opportunity to promote her makeup line. She preaches kindness, but she has a pretty long history of shady behaviour, and somehow I don’t believe that she even really wants her fans to stop bullying Hailey.
