Scobie: Prince Andrew really thought he could ‘comeback’ before QEII’s death

Prince Andrew has been in the news this week because of Peacock’s new documentary, Banished: Prince Andrew. It’s all about Andrew’s many crimes and misdemeanors and everything in between, including his degenerate behavior towards women and girls throughout his life. Omid Scobie devoted his weekly Yahoo UK column to the Andrew Problem – much of it we know/can assume, like the fact that King Charles has little to no sympathy for Andrew and wants Andrew to be out of sight and out of mind. Some highlights from Scobie’s column:

Andrew’s long-gestating comeback: There was a moment earlier this year where Prince Andrew truly believed he was building the path towards a comeback. Stripped of his titles and relegated to a retired life at home, sources tell me in early spring the prospectless Duke of York held a series of meetings with his lawyer and members of his team – all third party employees, since the Palace refuse to deal with him anymore – to discuss potential routes back into the public eye. “Not that he ever thought he would be a working royal again,” a close source tells me, “but he did discuss creating duties of his own, through philanthropic efforts and being seen as the supportive son of the Queen… These would contribute to rehabilitating his image. Not as the Duke of York, but simply as a man who wanted to do good.”

Andrew’s prominence during his mother’s funeral: He adopted a visible role in the ceremonial proceedings following the death of the Queen. Thanking well-wishers outside Balmoral Castle, it was one of the few moments he genuinely had the right to be a part of. “He would be sorely mistaken if he believes that might parlay into anything else,” a palace source explained to me last week. “He had every right to be part of each family event, but there was a conscious effort [behind the scenes]—within the institution and the family—to ensure he didn’t take advantage of the situation.” (Down to every last detail, including the optics of taking custody of the late monarch’s two dogs, which a York representative only named Sarah Ferguson in media briefings confirming the decision.)

The Other Brother: Without the soft spot of the Queen at his disposal – it was no secret that Andrew was her favourite child – the door is now shut tighter than ever for the prince. Though King Charles III has sympathy for his brother, I’m told, the newly-minted sovereign will “never” allow him to set foot near the family business again. So much so that Andrew may soon be stripped of his final link to the Crown—his role as a Councillor of State, which still allows the prince to deputise for the King should he be unable to work due to illness or absence abroad.

Andrew might be in the headlines again because of Ghislaine Maxwell: There is also speculation that Maxwell could try to reduce her 20-year prison sentence by becoming a government witness in any broader investigation into the social circle of Epstein, potentially thrusting Andrew into the limelight again.

That Peacock series: This week, a new documentary, Banished: Prince Andrew, reveals more details of Andrew’s life of bad decisions and “womanising”. Alongside suggestions that he was a sex addict, the production not only presents the eighth-in-line to the throne as a predator but also as a man who pursued a depraved friendship with Epstein and Maxwell so they could help him fulfil needs he was unable to satisfy elsewhere. I recently saw a preview and the archive interview with a masseuse who claims Andrew greeted her with the line, “Hey, nice a**. Do you take it up the a**?” is as stomach churning today as it was the first time around.

Will the Andrew Problem generate any British headlines? Whether any of this makes headlines in the British press will be another story altogether. Most newspapers seem to still be obsessively focused on stale tales about the Duchess of Sussexes’ supposed workplace “bullying” (the latest revelations still failing to provide any anecdotes or proof of said behaviour).

[From Yahoo UK]

That’s interesting framing, that Andrew was not just a predator but he also “pursued a depraved friendship with Epstein and Maxwell so they could help him fulfil needs he was unable to satisfy elsewhere.” As in, Andrew pursued friendships with Maxwell and Epstein because they supplied him with trafficked girls and women. Maxwell and Epstein’s trafficking campaign was a feature, not a bug. Anyway, we’ve known for a long time that all of the last vestiges of Andrew’s royal trappings would be filtered out when Charles became king. The only thing protecting Andrew at this point is that his rancid depravity isn’t the big story in Salt Island, he’s merely a grotesque sideshow. I doubt Charles will even make Andrew move out of Royal Lodge right away – that’s not even on Charles’s top-twenty to-do list.

If he truly wants to do good, what’s stopping him from volunteering quietly. Oh wait…

  2. Alice says:

Banished was really interesting and I want to talk about it!

I think Andrew is a spoiled horrible person but listening to person after person-courtier, Royal Rota rat, etc-say time and time again that basically his real problem was he has the audacity to think he was a person that mattered when really he was just a spare was just total wtf. I had a mild flash of sympathy.

It also made me think William is an idiot if he thinks the Rota will never turn on him.

In following the funeral, I really twigged to the term “minor royals.” It’s just this really weird way for courtiers, reporters, and even everyday royal watchers to puff themselves up by looking down on people who would be very consequential if not for the British rule of primogeniture.

Charles is feeding into this through his “slimming down” of the RF. Looks like the Danes are feeling the same urge. However, it just feeds this snobbish ugliness and I’m convinced it will lead more people to want to dump the whole concept of royalty. Cutting out your family for being younger children is ugly shit and normal people see that.

      And Andrew is the worst.

    • Becks1 says:

I haven’t watched this yet, but I read the book about him and Epstein by Nigel Cawthorne and he raised a similar point – basically for the first 22 years of his life Andrew was second in line, he was important in the royal family, etc. considering Charles was into his 30s by the time he married, its entirely possible that Andrew was thinking the crown would pass to him and his future line. Then Charles had two kids and Andrew got bumped down to 4th and his importance in the family waned very quickly, and he never really got over it.

Andrew is a disgusting human being but that family dynamic is toxic AF for all involved, including the direct heirs.

    • San Diego says:

I hate to say this but the rota will not turn on William. They have been protecting him his whole life and they already set up the antagonist ( Harry) to William’s story. William and Kate are protected by the Palace, Government and most importantly the media.

  3. ThatsNotOkay says:

He got to wear the Queen’s initials, though. “Priorities” is right. Right, Charles?

    • JT says:

And was able to wear his uniform without any of the back and forth that Harry went through. I’m really skeptical of the whole “Charles will truly put Andrew in his place schtick”, because Andrew has been very much protected by Charles this whole time. Even is this article it says that Charles has sympathy for Andrew, which has never been said about Harry.

      • ML says:

Yes, KC has sympathy with his brother and he wants to keep him out of sight. Yet, as a Knight of the Garter, he was able to participate out of the public eye, the corgis are with him, and he (pedofile) and Harry (protecting Meghan) were not treated similarly during the funeral. Barf.

  4. C-Shell says:

Another killer article by Omid. I’m always impressed with how credible his “sources” seem to be. This depiction of the limits imposed on Andrew during the Funeral Ordeal is interesting insight, but he was still treated better than Harry whose only “crime” is standing up for his wife and children, and turning his back on a corrupt and vicious family/business.

I’m planning to watch the Peacock doc on Andrew, and another they’re now streaming about Maxwell, maybe today. I’m supposed to be taking it easy, and I’m not sure what this horror will do for my well being.

  5. Eleonor says:

I am counting on Charles pettiness to keep pedo Andrew at bay.

  6. Jais says:

He’s so gross. I’m just curious if Andrew will get bored enough to start leaking things.

    • Eurydice says:

I don’t know about bored, but maybe if he becomes resentful enough and believes he’s the real victim.

    • MeganC says:

Given all we know about Andrew’s crimes and shadiness, I suspect Charles has far more dirt on him than he has on Charles.

      • Lucy says:

He hasn’t gone very far on the Finding Out curve for how much F*cking Around he’s done. I think he’s still got some of the the FA to do, as far as leaking against Charles. The Finding Out will hopefully be epic.

      • GirlMonday says:

Lucy, this is my favorite comment!

  7. Emily_C says:

Are they going to talk about him groping his daughter’s rear in front of the cameras during a memorial for his just-dead mother? I can’t believe how thoroughly that’s been buried.

    • vertes says:

That! Eug didn’t flinch so it couldn’t have been the first time. Just Daddy being loving.

    • WiththeAmerican says:

That was my thought, too. Why has that been erased like it never happened? That was so sickening.

    • Cessily says:

That was very disturbing, it made my stomach turn.

    • Lizzie Bathory says:

That, plus him guessing Virginia’s age correctly because she was his daughter’s age, PLUS the fact that Sarah Ferguson took those girls to Peter Nygard’s island has completely creeped me out.

We’ll never know what did or didn’t happen, but it’s a miracle that Beatrice & Eugenie appear relatively well adjusted.

    • Lizzie says:

That film of him groping Eug was disgusting and broke my heart for his daughters. I wish her husband would have slugged Andrew.

  8. Asantewaa says:

He could work on the numerous estates as a farm or grounds manager

  9. Aud says:

Andrew knows enough to scare Charles, imo. So Charles will strip him of things, but leave him with his house and a supply of cash to keep him quiet.

  10. Lizzie Bathory says:

I can’t wait to watch this documentary! Apparently, Dickie Arbiter says, “The problem is, the man’s an idiot.”

The Ghislaine thing seems like a red herring. If Ghislaine wanted to make a deal, the time for that would be well before she went to trial, was convicted & sentenced. Maybe she’d squeal to get a transfer out of her current Florida prison? But any moves she’d try to make will surely be made more difficult by the fact that she’s decided not to pay more than $800,000 in legal bills from her trial.

    • MeganC says:

Maxwell is never going to talk. She doesn’t want to go the way Epstein did.

      • Deering24 says:

I’m surprised she’s still breathing, frankly. The type of creeps she catered to aren’t known for their lack of paranoia.

  11. Shelley says:

He needs to be kicked out the sick old man

  12. HeatherC says:

Sadly I think if Elizabeth had lived longer, he may very well have had a come back.

  13. The Recluse says:

As much as Charles dislikes Andrew, I doubt he’ll ever force/oblige his brother to face the FBI for an interview/interrogation. Andrew will be protected for the rest of his miserable life.
