Netflix execs believe King Charles’s ‘friends’ are ‘coordinating’ attacks on ‘The Crown’

The actors involved in The Crown Season 5 have begun promotion for the series. They’ve all been biting their tongues when it came to the months-long tantrum from King Charles and his allies. Now they’re getting a chance to speak, and what’s great is that Netflix must have told them “you can say whatever you want, we’re not issuing talking points.” Netflix’s official position on King Charles is clearly: f–k around and find out. They’re not backing down, and Netflix executives are openly discussing Charles’s coordinated smear campaign with the trade papers. It’s glorious. Some highlights from this terrific Deadline piece, which features quotes from Leslie Manville (Princess Margaret), Jonathan Pryce (Prince Philip) and unnamed Netflix execs.

Jonathan Pryce on The Crown’s critics, including Judi Dench: Pryce told Deadline he’s ”bitterly disappointed” by those he termed “my fellow artistes,” for publicly criticizing the drama and demanding it carry a disclaimer. Oscar-nominee Pryce argued that “the vast majority of people know it’s a drama. They’ve been watching it for four seasons.” He conceded that he understood John Major “voicing his disquiet because he was there.” But he added: “I’m hugely disappointed by my fellow artistes.”

Leslie Manville on all of the anger & angst towards The Crown: Manville said that the ongoing hostility towards the Netflix and Left Bank series was ”certainly heightened” by the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8. Manville told Deadline, “There is, and for my part as well, a great deal of compassion towards the Queen, and depths of feeling that she is no longer with us. That has certainly heightened it all.” One important factor, Manville added, was the need to keep reminding viewers “that it’s a drama.”

On Judi Dench & John Major trashing ‘The Crown’: Many at Netflix were surprised at the interventions, not least because those shouting the loudest hadn’t seen advance previews of The Crown, and were relying on reports that were often misleading. One executive involved with the series whispered aloud the thought that the outbursts from Judi Dench and John Major were coordinated by “friends” of King Charles III. If so, we’ll never know.

Pryce on how Prince Philip treated his wife: There’s plenty of tension between them in season 5 with the Duke of Edinburgh being, at times, quite mean to the queen. “No more than anybody else’s husband,” Pryce shot back. “I don’t think he was mean. I’d have to watch it again. I think what you see is this long relationship where Philip, maybe, has had an image that he is always prepared to move forward, and questioning, and questing,” the former Game Of Thrones actor told us. He added that while Philip clearly loved the queen, perhaps, he ”would have liked her to be a bit more changeable, a bit more looking towards the future.”

[From Deadline]

“One executive involved with the series whispered aloud the thought that the outbursts from Judi Dench and John Major were coordinated by ‘friends’ of King Charles III” – lol, ya think?? Charles hasn’t hidden it, just like he didn’t hide his campaign two years ago, against Season 4. Charles and his people are openly briefing the British media against The Crown, and Buckingham Palace has clearly coordinated with Judi Dench, John Major and various Tory elders. Not to mention the open collusion between the king’s court and the British tabloids, all of which have been dutifully performing their outrage at a Netflix show for… filming scenes in Europe. I love that Jonathan Pryce is outraged too, and disgusted with Judi Dench for becoming a pawn of Charles and Camilla. Let Jonathan Pryce speak more! I want to hear all of his gossip.

Of course it’s a coordinated attack and I’m glad Jonathan Pryce has called out Judi Dench. She’s basically disavowed her previous work.

  2. Chantal says:

Love how Netflix is making it publicly known that they aren’t backing down. The BRF is acting like there isn’t a season 6 and although unlikely, Netflix would love more seasons. Trying to bully an American company while the younger Royals are trying to make inroads into the US is shortsighted and stupid. FAFO indeed.

  3. Deneph says:

Some things never change. Charles had his friends go after Di in the 90s the same way to protect him. Pitiful.

    • Kath says:

EXACTLY! I vividly remember Charles’ friends endlessly unning to the press to smear Diana in the 1990s, claiming Charles was only unfaithful because he was *such* a brilliant intellect. Poor stupid, simple Diana couldn’t possibly understand his type of sensitive genius. (Y’know, the guy who couldn’t get into university on his own merits).

And then there was all the sneering at Diana’s mental health and eating disorders, as if she was some some of hysterical nutjob instead of a very young, very unhappy women who had been trapped and betrayed by a much older, morally-bereft, chinless douchebag of a husband.

      • TheVolvesSeidr says:

And people still to this day repeat all of the smear campaign against Diana in it’s entirety. It was terribly successful. Even William has repeated parts of that bs.

I am getting buckets of popcorn for this, the mister has no interest in the BRF or gossip in general and HE is excited for this season. King Chuck is one spoilt man-baby and never learned about the Streisand effect did he?

    • Laura says:

My partner is the same! He can’t believe how much Charles HAS NOT changed and grown as a person and still seems to be the entitled tw@t he was 30 years ago. Mr. Laura didn’t like Charles then & his opinion has not improved.

  6. Scorpion says:

Charles is your typical narcissistic bully. Very sensitive, happy to pick on others. The moment, he gets a fraction of the flack he gives others, he gets his flying monkeys to do his dirty work.

    • Carty says:

That’s why I always side-eyed the narrative he was bullied at boarding school. Like he was some victim and not the pampered prince expecting kids to bow down to him. Kids don’t roll like that

  7. Becks1 says:

LOL, of course its coordinated. Someone pointed out that Judi Dench’s letter was probably mailed from Buckingham Palace itself. Did anyone think that Judi just decided she was over The crown and she was going to write a letter, or do we think Camilla or Charles made a phone call?

I agree with someone the other week who said we need to stop calling it the Streisand Effect and start calling it the Windsor Effect.

  8. Harla A Brazen Hussy says:

Every time that I see JLM the temperature in the room goes up several degrees 🔥. How does he manage it, no matter what costume or wig he’s wearing? 🔥🔥

  9. Seraphina says:

Wow, it’s almost like Netflix should pay King Charles the Spoiled for all the PR. Now my teenagers want to see what all the commotion is about.
I’d LOOOOOOVE to be a fly on the wall in the Monicito house and hear what Meghan and Harry are saying about this. Damn, damn, damn.

  10. Jaded says:

What a ninny KC3 is. You’d think he had better, more important things to do as King than take potshots at Netflix and The Crown through his “friends”. He’s the f*cking king of England. Act like it you twerp. As for Dame Judi, as much as I’ve loved her acting over the years, her friendship with Camilla and defense of Charles whining about a TV drama has really soured me on her.

    • Peanut Butter says:

No kidding. It’s impossible to respect a leader who prioritizes his petty PR war against The Crown over the very real issues and pain his “subjects” face every damn day. Maybe this cosseted member of the aristocracy should be at Soukya with Camilla to holistically chill at taxpayer expense. Send Judi, too.

  11. Brassy Rebel says:

The only thing I take issue with is this idea that the royals are melting down because of the Queen’s death. Seriously, they never worried about hurting her with their gross and embarrassing behavior when she was alive. Why would they be concerned about her now that she’s gone? I mean, people, she was alive when her son envisioned himself as his mistress’s sanitary product!

  12. jferber says:

As strategists they are stupid as hell.

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

Jferber, are we sure that there’s a strategy? It feels like they’re thowing everything against the wall and hoping something sticks.

  13. jferber says:

They are blowing up the show (translation for the Brits: giving it mad publicity). I never wanted to watch the show since I find them so distasteful, but hell, I’ll watch it now.

  14. Lisa says:

only hit dogs holler. keep on hollering!

  15. bisynaptic says:

    Um… sure, Jan.
