New ‘Babylon’ trailer released, this one with even more Brad Pitt: gross?

The last Damien Chazelle movie I watched was La La Land. I hated it. I still remember CB walking out of it because of the extreme white nonsense of that movie too, although I watched it until the end (I still have regrets). The biggest problem with La La Land was, quite honestly, the script. The characters were stupid, the plot was asinine and yes, it was entirely too white given that one of the lead characters was obsessed with whitesplaining jazz. I’ve been thinking about La La Land’s issues and whether Babylon will also display Chazelle’s lack of substance when it comes to writing, plot and characterization. Will we care about any of Babylon’s characters, or will they just be dumb pretty people getting into dumb shenanigans in a series of beautiful set pieces? The full-length trailer has come out:

This trailer features much more of Brad Pitt’s character than the first one. Pitt plays an established star of the early-Hollywood era, while Diego Calva and Margot Robbie are playing young actors on the come-up. Anyway, this trailer doesn’t give me much hope that I’ll care about these characters whatsoever. I also think it’s probably typecasting to have Pitt playing an aging alcoholic mess who relies on his good looks and privilege to get him out of jams.

    Yawn, I’m already bored.

    • BeanieBean says:

Hollywood does love to make movies about itself. I feel as though I’ve seen this one many times before. Ho hum, indeed.

  2. Kathgal says:

What I find interesting is that the general population really does not understand how gross Brad Pitt is. There’s a lot of details on this site and sites like Lainey, but his overall stardom has not diminished. It’s almost like unless you went looking for it you would have no idea. He is still getting high profile fawning.

      1. Not everybody follows gossip. You have to actively look for it. In the old days, (I’m old) the US supermarket rags were at the check out counter, where u would be stuck in line and pick up a copy of Star or Nal Enq to read. 2. Some people hate Angelina Jolie for reasons that have nothing to do with Jen Aniston. Just plain old misogyny

      • Betty says:

Not everyone follows lainey or gossips sites. Not everyone believes Angelina who has her own awful background with drugs. Anorexia. Mental health. Parental alienation and affairs with married men. It takes two to make a marriage. You should not jump on bandwagon with out all the facts. He’s a great actor

    Thank you!!!

Don’t get me started either on LaLaLand🤦‍♀️

A bit of a review below with no spoilers but here goes…

Oh @Kaiser, buckle up for this film because it is divisive. It is a visually stunning mess. I usually like Chazelle’s work but I did not like this film(although the acting is good). Some people loved it but I was not one of them.

The female characters are painfully underwritten but that is nothing to how he problematically writes(or doesn’t write) the POC and queer characters. I just….

And for a film that is suppose to be a critique of Hollywood but a love letter to film, I thought it was lazy and derivative in how it talked about the power of film and how it showcased its influences.

  5. TIFFANY says:

Chazelle’s success is inexplicable and this trailer still keeps me in that mindset. JK Simmons agreeing to do Whiplash is what gave this dude credence and that is it.

He has all of Barry Jenkins Best Director awards and I will die on that hill.

    • Jess says:

Ditto to everything Tiffany says. I’ve never understood his appeal and this movie just annoys me more and more. I’m trying to see as many Oscar bait movies as I can this fall (in theaters when possible) but I will be skipping this one.

  6. Facts says:

I don’t think Pitt is fawned over. It’s just a few female and fan boys that continue to head with his looks. He is and has always been problematic hidden with money and top notch agents.
As for the film I’m sure they will try to sell
It because films in HW unless it’s
Marvel or big names are getting slammed at the box office. It’s not just because of Marvel there are many factors streaming services and high prices are a few.
Babylon can’t save that. Pitt is gross and spitefully stupid people know this but won’t dare say it out loud.

Well, at least BP won’t need to actively act in this film…

  8. Digital Unicorn says:

I want to be excited for the movie as that era of HW fascinates me – there are so many real life characters that they could focus on i.e. Fatty Arbuckle, the Pickfords, the alleged sexcapes etc.. that went on in the infamous Garden of Allah hotel (it was the Chateau Marmont of its day) etc..

  9. Mandy says:

Well…finally I feel I’m not the only one who thought LA LA Land to be a frightful mess. To the stiff belabored dancing and singing, to the stiff white bread characters, plot and execution…immensely hyped and overrated! Sigh…and I’m a Midwestern transplant who has lived in LA since 1978. Plus, I like Ryan Gosling from The Notebook & have adored Emma Stone’s work in other movies, both so talented. But, to me…LALA Land was so phony it insulted my intelligence. I could go on but I try to erase it from my memory as much as possible. Will I check out Babylon? Only on a small screen…I believe in second chances, probably.

I liked La La Land but I thought part of its challenge was that is was heavily influenced by a far better film( the French masterpiece from the 60’s, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg). I mean, I think it is interesting that Chazelle wears his film influences on his sleeve but I do think it is tough when people can see it easily and compare to the films that influence it and are left finding it wanting.

      • Barbc says:

Pitt has big fan base. One of the last Hollywood stars. Loved and supported by Hollywood. A hard worker. Angelina is the one who has skeletons in her closets known by Hollywood

  10. Nanz says:

It’s giving Great Gatsby and Wolf of Wall Street vibes. No thanks.

  11. meli says:

Couldn’t even get through the trailer. Snooze.
Margot Robbie is so vanilla and boring. I will die on that hill.

  12. Trish says:

I thought this already came out and bombed? Oh I’m thinking of that other Margot Robbie movie.

Sry, she’s okay it’s just some of her movies recently are just blah.

  13. Solidgold says:

I will watch when it hits streaming. Margot has one Americans accent for all her movies.

  14. Gabby says:

Beautiful people and scenes, but I got bored halfway through the trailer. If I want a debaucherous Hollywood “inside” story, I’ll re-watch Entourage. I am also open to suggestions if any of you have recommendations.

  15. Beech says:

I like the poster. I hated Whiplash.

  16. TheVolvesSeidr says:

Something that has always bothered me about Pitt is that his mouth is always open. Agape. Like a drooling idiot w/o the drool. SHUT YO MOUTH BRAD.
