Rihanna wears gorgeous origami dress at the Glamour Awards

Here’s Rihanna at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in New York last night. She’s wearing an ivory Stephane Rolland dress that I will name “the origami/paper airplane dress”. It’s a spectacular fashion statement, and one of the few from Rihanna I actually love. Some people are calling it a “wedding dress”, but do you know any bride who would want this dress for her wedding day? I don’t. Just because it’s white and amazing, doesn’t mean it’s a wedding dress.

Anyway, while on the red carpet, Rihanna spoke to People Magazine about her album, and her responsibility to young women everywhere to speak out about domestic violence. Rihanna is fresh off the extensive coverage she got for her sit-down interview with Diane Sawyer (coverage here and here). Meanwhile, Chris Brown is stick a f-cking douchebag, but Rihanna seems to be finding her voice as a role model and advocate:

From the pain comes the creativity. While writing songs for her upcoming album, Rated R, Rihanna had to let down her guard and draw from a private place full of pain to express herself through music.

“I’m usually a very guarded person, so having to go in and reach your emotions and personal things to say, it was very vulnerable,” the Barbadian beauty, 21, told PEOPLE at Monday night’s Glamour Women of the Year Awards in New York City.

She said the inspiration for her upcoming album, which will be released Nov. 23, come from “personal experiences mixed with rock and hip-hop.”

Since February, when she was beaten by then-boyfriend Chris Brown, Rihanna has had to deal with court proceedings and criticism for taking Brown back. Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault after pictures of her battered face were leaked. After leaving him, she revealed that he had shoved her into a car window, punched her several times in the face, and bit her.

Now, as a victim of domestic violence, Rihanna said it’s her responsibility to speak out for other women who’ve been through the same thing.

“I’m really a woman, a human being,” she said. “I go through real situations that women all over the world go through every day. It’s great to have the opportunity to be a voice for those women.”

While accepting the Women of the Year award on Monday, presented by the model Iman, Rihanna entered the stage and shed a tear, claiming it was PMS, and then happily continued to thank friends, mentor Jay-Z, her mother and grandmother.

And she actually made a joke, ribbing herself for her ivory Stephane Rolland dress. “As usual, I decided do the tightest dress I could find,” she said to appreciative laughter.

Rihanna actually picked up a “Woman of the Year” award at the Glamour ceremony, and RiRi got emotional when she accepted her award. According to Hollyscoop, “Rihanna walked on stage and wiped a tear, joking that it was PMS.” During Rihanna’s speech, she said: “I’m really a woman, a human being. I go through real situations that women all over the world go through every day. It’s great to have the opportunity to be a voice for those women.”

Ummm, that dress is not gorgeos

  2. Cristina says:

Wont let me edit my comment. The dress is not gorgeous

  3. Enonymous says:

The dress is questionable but she is so pretty.

  4. Firestarter says:

I think she looks great and I love the dress. Very unique, and very lovely fabric.

  5. LolaBella says:

    Rihanna looks beautiful.

The dress is unique looking but it has a ‘Project Runway circa Season 5’ look to me. Rihanna ‘makes it work’, though!

  6. Firestarter says:

The dress was designed by Stephane Rolland.

  7. Dobben says:

    1. Origami is not how to describe that dress.

    2. Neither is gorgeous.

  8. Dobben says:

Something is either unique, or it isn’t. There’s no “very” about it.

  9. Eileen Yover says:

I love the dress, its perfect for her, and she looks gorgeous!

  10. e says:

No one could make this dress work and I don’t care how prominent the designer is…it is awful. That mesh looks like they raided M Lohan’s closet and the mermaid tail didn’t work for Beyonce or any of the other fools that wore them to the 2009 Oscars.

  11. e says:

Her hair looks better though…I will admit that.

  12. Praise St. Angie! says:

Dobben…THANK YOU for your comment on the word “unique”.

some grammar errors I can overlook, but this one gets me for some reason. you are exactly right, something either IS or IS NOT unique…there are no varying degrees of “uniqueness”.

something can be very distinctive, but not very unique.

OK, on topic…she looks beautiful but I don’t like the dress – it seems like it would be really awkward to move around in.

EDIT: OK, now I’m laughing so hard because MichaelK has posted this under “What the Hell Kind of GD Dress is This?”

  13. Firestarter says:

Dobben- Well thank you ever so much for the correction, as if that were necessary!

I still think the dress is very unique!

  14. Heather says:

I’m glad she’s finally speaking out about what happened with CB. She’s right, it’s a great opportunity to help others looking up to her to see how she deals with it. She looks amazing, too!

  15. HS says:

I think gorgeous should have been “gorgeous”…

  16. princess pea says:

Damn, that’s an awesome dress. I would really like to see it in person; I bet it’s even better.

  17. Praise St. Angie! says:

    Firestarter….

    😛

  18. Guest says:

That’s a no on the dress & hair.

  19. Novaraen says:

No….that dress isn’t gorgeous…and actually looks kinda cheap.

  20. Amedeah says:

    Ew to the dress.

  21. Jag says:

She’s gorgeous, but the dress isn’t.

  22. yadira says:

She looks different since she finally spoke about her incident. She looks relaxed and is actually looking at the cameras and smiling. Like a huge weight was taken off her shoulders.

    AS for the dress, :/

  23. wow says:

    Her fashion stylist kicks ass.

I’m a bit bothered that they gave Rhianna a woman of the year award for anything. She went back to someone who abused her, even when a judge had ordered them to stay a part. I just don’t get that.

But back to her “look”. I’m not liking the Beyonce blond hair. It needs to go…quickly. She use to have such cut little hairdo’s…until this. I like the dress a lot though. She makes it work until you get to her hair color.

  24. RedEyeJedi says:

She needs to lay off the foundation or whatever she is wearing that’s making her face look white. I like her eye make up but she needs to get something thats closer to her skin color.

And the dress is meh. Cute, but I wouldn’t call it gorgeous.

  25. RhymesWithSilver says:

She looks like a walking paper jam.

  26. gg says:

    Stunning! She wears it well.

    * I don’t believe though that there is anything wrong with saying “very unique” at all! Don’t you ever say “very different”? Seems exactly the same to me.

  27. snowball says:

You can’t see it in this pic, (MK has a series of them up) but there’s a huge, industrial strength white zipper running up her back. It goes all the way from her hip area (the satin) to the neck (the sheer stuff). It’s unbelievably ugly. Well, so’s the dress.

  28. gg says:

😆 @ RhymesWith !! it does look like a paper jam!

  29. bros says:

the dress is stunning and has amazing architectural detail. she is one of a few women who could pull it off-charlize being another one. this is similar to that giant bow dress charlize wore, which I loved, which not a lot of women can pull off. she’s rocking this and this dress is really a piece of art.

  30. lilred says:

The phrase “Hot Tranny Mess” comes to mind.Lol.

  31. HashBrowns says:

This dress looks like an unfurled paper towel roll that got smushed before it unrolled.

    Not. Cute.

She’s a adorable though. I expect they gave her the Woman of the Year thing because she actually left him later (they aren’t still together, obviously) and they probably knew about her interview with Diane Sawyer. I say good for her for speaking out and not fearing the “consequences” of saying something. There is nothing shameful about speaking about the abuse a person has suffered.

  32. Daisy says:

Im kinda with u lilred…although Im kinda starting to soften towards her.I hate her style, though. Its way to over the top.

  33. Zarah says:

I like the dress and I think she wears it well. She has a killer figure! And the hair is looking softer, not as harsh and severe as it once was. She’s experimenting with her look and if you can’t do it when you’re young, famous and have
oodles of money when can you?

  34. crash2GO2 says:

That dress made me LOL! And she is not wearing it, it is definitely wearing her. ROTFL….

  35. california angel says:

I like the back of the dress and the way the dress fits, it could do without the front frill IMO.

    random aside:
From society to society, and within societies, there are varying degrees of the notion that is “standard”. Wouldn’t this then mean that there are, indeed, varying degrees of the notion that is “unique”? If two people think something is unique in differing ways, how else would you describe the difference without varying the use of the word (i.e. with an adjective or an adverb such as very)?

  36. Maritza says:

RhymesWith said it so well, it does look like a paper jam!

  37. QB says:

Her face looks way to white, that dress does not look like origami is looks like paper you write the answer to the test so that you can cheat, an origami dress looks like the one Galliano did or the gyvenchi dress natalie portman used in cannes.

  38. Praise St. Angie! says:

“Wouldn’t this then mean that there are, indeed, varying degrees of the notion that is “unique”?”

    no.

the word unique means “the one and only of its kind” or “without an equal or equivalent”.

either it IS “the one and only”, or it is NOT “the one and only”. it cannot be a varying degree of the one and only.

if it’s unique, it’s not like anything else in any way.

something that IS sorta like something else, but has something (special) about it that makes it different from what it is similar to could be called “distinctive”.

like a lot of other words in the English language, “unique” has taken on an informal or “colloquial” meaning…”unusual” or “distinctive”.

again, sorry if this is coming off as militant. I’m not usually a grammarian, but there are a couple of things that bother me. THIS one, and when people say “I could care less” when they really mean “I COULDN’T care less”.

    ok, rant over…carry on.

  39. Lem says:

that dress might be pretty; hard to tell since she left half the protective wrap on it. Jezz, RIRI thae crinkle wrap is just to keep the dress safe in shipping. You are to remove it before leaving the house.

  40. Firestarter says:

Well, I still think the dress is VERY unique! ; p

I guess that bugs a few peple on here like the words “conversate” and “inplants” bother me. I go mad when people say conversate, or inplants. Also when they use the word chest when speaking about the game chess.

And YES, I am the grammatically challenged individual who said ” very unique”

  41. lolo says:

Sorry, St Angie I have to completely disagree here. These days, words have many different meanings and uses. Their use is not singular.

Modern grammar is becoming more colloquial, following the movement of our culture.
That’s the way of language–it changes and adapts with the times.

Case in point, here’s the five dictionary definitions for the word unique. Please see number #5.

u⋅nique  /yuˈnik/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [yoo-neek] Show IPA

–adjective 1. existing as the only one or as the sole example; single; solitary in type or characteristics: a unique copy of an ancient manuscript.
    2. having no like or equal; unparalleled; incomparable: Bach was unique in his handling of counterpoint.
    3. limited in occurrence to a given class, situation, or area: a species unique to Australia.
    4. limited to a single outcome or result; without alternative possibilities: Certain types of problems have unique solutions.
    5. not typical; unusual: She has a very unique smile.

  42. Lem says:

    😉
    – I’ve never heard anyone use the word conversate nor inplant. Would I conversate with you or would we conversate about that?

supposably, you guyes, who’s for whose. I end sentences with prepositions like, you know.

I’m of the mind very is a form of extremely. Therefore this dress could be blandly unique, extremely unique or batsh!t unique. As in Dita is blandly unique, Gaga is extremely unique and Tommy Girl is batsh!t unique. o.k. bad example. Point is their uniqueness takes different forms.

  43. Firestarter says:

@Lem, someone in another thread this very day used “inplant”. I had a person who I worked with once who insisted I was wrong when I said “breast implants”.

You are lucky to have been spared of the “conversate” word being used. No matter how many times I explain that there is no such word, people still manage to use it in conversations, or in print!

  44. Squirtle says:

Wow! I was just hoping for was some pretty photos of Riri and instead I got a lesson in grammar.

Hahahaa, good info though..or tho or however you would prefer it.

  45. karen says:

@St angie: “I could care less” when they really mean “I COULDN’T care less””

Both are grammatically incorrect. They’re slang. Could is a hypothetical used to denote possibility, as in “I wonder who that could be at the door. That couldn’t be true! Could you open the door for me, please?”

When you are expressing strong certainty, as in “I don’t care!” you don’t use could. This verb implies your caring is still a possibility when the true meaning the speaker wants is the exact opposite. “I could not care less” literally means it’s a possibility for me to care but not, or less now. It’s a double negative which makes little sense as written, hence it’s slang. Yes, I’m an English major.

  46. delicious says:

Screw the dress! what’s up that foundation? It doesn’t even match her neck.

  47. NFLer says:

    Not digging the hair though.

  48. jayem says:

You guys just completely cracked me up, seeing as I just posted on another site about people not knowing the difference between “roll” and “role”. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who gets irked by certain grammatical things.

  49. JaNa'e says:

what was she named woman of the year for? she hasn’t done anything this year: no album, no charity work, nothing. it seems to me that people are just trying to be sympathetic because of the situation with chris. if she won an award for simply running around in heels and being spotted by the paparazzi for the past few months then we should all be women of the year.
