Here are some photos from the London Critics Circle Awards, held on Sunday, February 5th. The big winner? Todd Field’s Tár!! Which is great because that was my favorite film of the year. It took home Film of the Year, Best Director and Best Actress for Cate Blanchett. The Banshees of Inisherin was named the British/Irish film of the year and Colin Farrell won Best Actor, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan winning in the supporting categories. Bill Nighy and Florence Pugh were named British/Irish actors of the year (for their body of work) and Michelle Yeoh picked up the Dilys Powell award for excellence in film.
Cate Blanchett wore Alexander McQueen to the awards – a black suit with crazy blue sleeves. She’s pulling it off, honestly. She almost always does pull it off, whatever she’s wearing.
Michelle Yeoh also wore Alexander McQueen – she looks amazing. We’re about five weeks away from the Oscars and I still have no idea whether Cate or Michelle will win the Best Actress Oscar. Bonus Ke Huy Quan!
Florence Pugh wore Robert Wun – this is such a bad look, my God. Why are people determined to make peplums a thing again? And the hat with the veil… odd, very odd.
Bonus Paul Mescal! Is… he going to have that unfortunate mullet for the entire awards season?

I like Cate’s outfit from the front, but not the side. Florence is a very pretty woman and I didn’t mind the outfit. Michelle Yeoh looked phenomenal.
I really thought peplums were something that wouldn’t be making a comeback, especially so soon. Reese was just wearing a peplum dress at her premiere too.
Cate and Michelle both look great. I love big emerald earrings with all black. Angelina Jolie did that at the Oscars once, it was divine.
I thought Tar was amazing, but again, that is Cate’s wheelhouse. She will always be amazing and she will always get first pick on amazing projects.
Michelle finally was giving a script to show that she is a great actress. I want her to win the Oscar because she finally got a chance to deliver.
Cate is doing what we have seen from her a thousand times over.
Cate wasn’t given first pick, she developed the idea and would not give up trying to entice Todd Field out of retirement to write and direct it. Field ignored it until he couldn’t. She’s been promoting it like the rent is due because she’s a producer. I think it parallels someone like Quinta Bronson or Phoebe Waller Bridge’s Fleabag.
We need more women playwrights & producers, we need WOC in those roles, and we need to support them at the box office to get meaningful change.
Sooooo…..my point was made.
And yes on more BIPOC behind the camera running things.
I absolutely love Cate’s look!
I don’t find Paul Mescal attractive at all, although he was great in Normal People.
Ugh…I LOVE Cate’s suit. So damn cool and chic. And Michelle looked ethereal even though in all black. Beautiful Florence needs a new stylist ASAP.
Tiffany, agree. I want Michelle Yeoh to win, too. Even the best actress in the world, Bette Davis, only won 2 Oscars. No way should Cate win 3.
Cate only has one for Best Actress, the other is supporting. So she’s still behind Katharine Hepburn, Frances McDormand, Bette Davis, Ingrid Bergman, Meryl Streep, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Glenda Jackson, Jodie Foster, Sally Field, Vivien Leigh, and Hilary Swank.
She’s tied with Renee Zellweger right now with one Best Actress and one supporting. Sorry, but she’s better than Renee and several of the women that already have 2 Best Actress awards.
I’m not saying she should win over Michelle Yeoh, but a lot of other women have been awarded more than Cate.
“Is… he going to have that unfortunate mullet for the entire awards season?”
Tragically? Yes. ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ extended its run in the West End until May. Oh the humanity! 😁
Generally I am appalled by the mullet but I went to see the play on Saturday and damn, the man looks incredible in the reals. It works for him
The sleeves are taking me to the 80s. I’m fine with all the looks. I love Cate, but Michelle needs an Oscar.
I’m surprised she was there, wasn’t she over these awards that mean nothing to her? But I guess like all ways it was all talk to seem like she isn’t campaigning as hard as everybody else which In fact she is.
I’m trying to put my finger on why Cate’s ridiculousness works and Florence’s doesn’t.
Cate has the face for it.
Mullets are (and gave been for couple of years) the trendiest hairstyle for men , haha have to admit i love them in all forms
