Michelle Yeoh wore Gucci at the Spirit Awards & happily posed with Cate Blanchett

For much of the awards season, it felt like Tar was marching towards an inevitable sweep of Best Actress, Best Director and Best Picture. I’m biased because I loved the movie and I was actually quite pleased that it looked like Cate Blanchett would sweep the big awards. But then something really shifted in recent weeks – Everything Everywhere All at Once started to surge, big-time. At the SAGs – a huge indicator for how the acting Oscars will go – Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan picked up individual SAGs and the film picked up Best Ensemble. At this weekend’s Spirit Awards, I once again thought that Tar would be super-competitive. It was not – it was another sweep for EEAAO, which picked up awards for Best Feature, Best Director, Lead Performance (the acting categories were genderless) and Supporting Performance (Ke Huy Quan).

So… I’m starting to feel like Michelle Yeoh might need to get her Oscar speech ready. I also feel like Cate is fine with it. While Cate is incredibly proud of Tar – as she should be! – she’s also been there, done that with awards seasons and winning Oscars. It feels amazing to see Yeoh get her proverbial flowers after so many years.

Fashion notes: Michelle wore Gucci, a sculptural piece in a beautiful shade of blue. Cate wore another repeat – a Loewe look she’s had in her closet for years. Michelle and Cate posed together on the Spirit Awards carpet too. I love them. They absolutely need to make a lesbian drama or a murder mystery together. Or a lesbian noir!! Come on, that writes itself.

    Love both their looks.

  2. Mcmmom says:

I like what both of them are wearing. The energy coming off of Michelle Yeoh and the interactions with other women (Cate, Jamie Lee Curtis) are exactly what I needed to see these days.

I love woman camaraderie. We should have more of that. And I finally got to watch her film this weekend, and it was completely bonkers. OMG lol I love those movies that are completely new to what we know.

Who doesn’t love their Big Friend Energy! Keep the positive vibe going, ladies, keep it up.

I love everything about this. And they both look beautiful. I am crossing my fingers for Michelle.

The blue sculpture works well unlike what happens with so many dresses when the designer descides to incorporating a large unusual element. And the other success factor is that she looks like she is enjoying wearing it.

Their Variety interview together was good. These are two people that like each other and like each others work.

Well, I do love both looks, but I want Yeoh to win so much.

I’m rooting for Michelle Yeoh. She’s been the Grande Dame of Malaysian cinema and a powerhouse in the South Eastern Asian film community, it would be great to see and a huge win. I know EEAAO isn’t for everyone but I love that such a weird movie got made.

She is being treated like a prop by these white actresses. This is not comraderie ,seems insincere.

    • Mcmmom says:

Have you seen the photos with Jamie Lee Curtis where she looks like she’s roaring because she’s so excited for Michelle Yeoh? Have you read the interviews? I’m not sure how you get an insincere vibe from that.

    • Kebbie says:

Have you watched the video where Cate and Michelle interview each other for 45 minutes? Actors on Actors or whatever it’s called. Cate seems to sincerely admire her and her work, IMO.

Michelle looks amazing. I love that dress.

  9. Ameerah M says:

Michelle looks amazing – that color works on her. And I love that Cate has been re-wearing vintage pieces for a majority of this awards cycle. It’s refreshing and it shows that great fashion and tailoring stands the test of time.

Please will someone explain what the boxy gesture to the forehead means?
