Jodie Turner Smith wore Elie Saab to the Spirit Awards: ice skater chic?

Here are some photos from Saturday’s Spirit Awards in Santa Monica. Usually, the Spirits are scheduled for Oscar weekend, as part of the blitz of events for nominees who are finally finished with campaigning and finally get to just party. I don’t know why they did it the weekend before the Oscars this year. They got a pretty good turnout, and the Spirits have increasingly become a fashion event too. Speaking of, Jodie Turner-Smith wore this Elie Saab number which… I mean, I’ve gotten used to the fact that she goes over-the-top with her red carpet style. But this is way too short! My goodness.

Andrea Riseborough went to the Spirits, one of her few awards-season appearances (she was nominated). The suit is bad and so is her hair.

Paul Mescal – the stiff, wide-leg trousers (nearly palazzo pants), the tank, the blazer… well, it’s a combo. Does he have a stylist? Does he like clothes? I can’t figure out if he just wears what he’s given or if he’s like “no, I know what I’m going to wear” and he pulls out some palazzo pants and a scoopneck tank.

Mia Goth in vintage Galliano – I love this? I would wear the f–k out of this. I love her cloth headband too. She’s amazing.

Aubrey Plaza in Saint Laurent. I love when women wear suits to these events, but this is way too big on her. Don’t @ me with “oh that’s the design” – the design sucks and tailoring if every woman’s friend. No woman should wear a jacket where the shoulders look that comically big. I don’t understand why designers don’t bother to tailor sh-t anymore.

Beatrice Granno & Simona Tabasco played the Italian hookers in the White Lotus Season 2. I loved those characters and I love these two actresses so much. I love that they’ve been traveling to New York and LA and really trying to book work off of the success of the show too. They deserve! They’re great.

Love the White Lotus actresses and Beatrice Granno’s 80s Madonna throwback look. Can we please retire “hookers” though? #SexWorkers

  2. Erin says:

I’m sure it’s tailored to look that way. I don’t mind it, but the waaayyyy too long pants are a bridge too far. Her makeup is perfection!

  3. Kate says:

Jodie Turner-Smith has never met a red carpet she didn’t like!

    • Kelly says:

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything she’s in but I have to stop and look everytime I see a picture of her. She is absolutely breathtaking.

  4. Original penguin says:

On anyone else I’d hate this- on Jodie it works.

I really like ?Simona’s silver and blue jacket with cigarette pants- she looks very cool

  5. IForget says:

Jodie’s makeup is ON POINT. I adore the way her eyeliner/shadow was done on her bottom lid. I need to try this. Dang she is breathtaking.

  6. Pulplove says:

Jodie pulls it off almost every single time! I think she looks stunning. Love the make-up and the shape of her shoes.

As different as Jodie’s and Zendaya’s styles are, to me, they are both queens in that department.

  7. Margot says:

This is incredible! She never does boring basic, does she!

  8. TwinFalls says:

I’m going to disagree. While Jodie is gorgeous, her dress is not. The woven macrame look plus the feathers plus the ice skating costume length, none of it comes together in a flattering way.

Same here. Over the top should be fun, or super dramatic (cardi b at Grammys), or very avant garde or something very emotion-provoking. I’m just puzzled by Jodie’s looks. Those chokers especially – why?!!
The colors never flatter and would be hard to pull off for anyone, the fabrics look synthetic, the concept is confusing… Is this some GenZ thing I’m too old to get?

She’s stunning. Great figure, flawless bone structure. She has an elegance to her. I don’t know why her stylist/whoever isn’t leaning into that. Instead it’s like “let’s do the opposite of elegant and see if she can pull it off!”

Lainey over at laineygossip raves about her outfits every time. But it smacks of “greetings my fellow kids”… I don’t think she gets it either.

Whooo! Wanted to get that off my chest for a while!

      • Debbie says:

I agree wholeheartedly about this analysis of Jodie’s outfit and her whole aesthetic. In the picture above, the makeup is chasing the ice skater garishness, which was not flattering to begin with. It’s a shame to put such over the top makeup on her, since she’s got very nice bone structure. Everything is competing for attention, and one hardly knows where to look. The rest of the looks are not so hot either.

    • schmootc says:

Agreed, this is just too much and in a bad way. I think it would be better if it was longer and there were just feathers on the bottom and around the bodice.

    • Ange says:

Jodie is a gorgeous woman but to me she misses more than she hits. A lot of the time what she wears has at least one element too many.

  9. FHMom says:

Audrey Plaza’s suit made me giggle. Who thought that fit her correctly? And look at the pants’ length. How did she not trip? Jodie’s look is amazing. Not many woman could pull that off.

    • Yup, Me says:

I thought something similar until I thought about how much time actresses spend in clothes that are tight and fitted and invite comment and critique of their bodies (and ignore the temperature of the elements).

I would imagine an oversized suit feels AMAZING to be in on the red carpet.

  10. J. Ferber says:

Fashion-wise, Jodie can do no wrong. Who is her stylist? Always impeccable!

  11. Diamond Rottweiler says:

Paul Mescal’s sartorial choices are…interesting. You’re right, hard to tell if this is a stylist trying to project “hip! young! edgy!” or him having his own decided POV. I think the thing that makes for some cognitive dissonance is seeing traditionally feminine cuts on a man who reads physically as so old school traditionally masculine. It is interesting. Maybe he’s in the vanguard and a decade from now men of his physical type wearing palazzo pants and “feminine” tops won’t even register as a bold choice? Probably. Makes me think of the late 18th century when fashionable American men went full “Macaroni.”

  12. Kirsten says:

Jodie looks amazing but she always has one accessory (jewelry, hair, or makeup) too much. everything else here is srsly so bad.

  13. Ameerah M says:

Mescal actually looks fantastic! I am usually underwhelmed by his styling but I love this. This is straight off the runway. And yes – he has a stylist. This is VERY on trend for men’s fashion atm.

  14. ama1977 says:

I think Jodie’s dress is seriously bonkers and on anyone else would be laughable, but she…carries it off!! Like she’s not even worried about what you think, so of course it’s fabulous.

Andrea Risebrough, ugh. The suit IS terrible and looks so 80’s in a bad way (let’s face it, most stuff that looks like it’s from the 80’s is bad, lol.)

I love Audrey Plaza but agree that the suit is just fitted poorly. If “that’s the style” then it shouldn’t be because it just looks like it doesn’t fit her. Her styling is lovely though.

Paul Mescal…no. None of it looks good.

Mia Goth is dressing to type and it works for her.

  15. Sue says:

Jodie is Swan Lake chic and I’m here for it. The top is fine on Audrey but I’ll never understand why women don’t get their suits hemmed? Because it’s borrowed? Because it’s last minute? Help me to understand this.

  16. Grant says:

I like what Paul Mescal is wearing. It’s very fashion-forward right now. The wide-leg pant and the distinctive blazer are way too sartorial for this to be something that he just threw together.

  17. HeyKay says:

    JTS is a total Wow!
What a beauty, those colors set off her gorgeous skin like magic.
She must have a line of skin care she endorses, no?
Legs for days in that dress.
I do think it would look better if the length was 3-4″ longer, or maybe with a high/low hem.

On my best day, my legs have never looked 1/2 as good.

  18. Bread and Circuses says:

I don’t think Jodie Turner Smith’s dress is too short; I think it’s perfect! She looks adorable.

Seriously, this woman is always an absolute treat to look at, every time.

  19. Denise says:

I like Jodie’s look????? Yeah, I like it. It definitely won’t work on everyone but it looks cute and fun on her. I expect a version of it to show up in a Fashion game that I play. LOL
