Ayo Edebiri in Oscar de la Renta at the Spirit Awards: super cute?

The Independent Spirit Awards were this weekend, the last awards show before the Oscars next weekend. And the last to include TV categories. These awards always seem bit more chill compared to the “big show” next weekend, but not so for the fashion.

Here’s Ayo Edebiri from The Bear in a kicky little Oscar de la Renta dress. I like the gold/silver/bronze thing the dress has going on. And I swore at first the appliqués on her dress were mushrooms caps, but maybe I just thought that because of her show because upon a closer look they’re actually flowers. She looks very sparkly and cute and I can’t wait for The Bear to come back. She took home the Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series Award and she posed with her co-star Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Here’s Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All at Once in Khoon Hooi. This look is nice and elegant, if a bit corporate. The big sleeves work with the off-shoulder dress. I like her makeup and styling with the hair jewels, but the dangling piece of hair is bugging me a bit. Stephanie won the Breakthrough Performance Award.

MJ Rodriguez was there in magenta Lena Erziak. Beautiful woman, beautiful color, serving face, etc. But this dress is serious shower puff vibes. It looks like she’s naked behind a loofah, which I guess is the point? She and Stephanie share a stylist.

Here’s Gabrielle Union in a purple and black, sequined, asymmetrical oversized Gucci tuxedo dress. I love this look — the jewels, the face, the hair, the shoes. A+, no notes. I also like Dwyane Wade’s fancy professor at office hours vibe. Gabrielle was nominated for Best Supporting Performance in The Inspection, but it went to Ke Huy Quan.

Taylour Paige was there as a presenter in Acne Studios. You’d think I’d like the color and I do, but this look is too undone for me. The dress looks like it’s unraveling and I’m not really into those artfully messy buns outside of the gym. She looks pretty with natural makeup to go with the dress’s lady of the woods vibe. And she said in her post that “unlike last year [she] made it to the carpet and had shoes” so that’s something.

Dwyane and Gabrielle have a mom & dad out for the evening at a gala for local dentists vibe, I just love these two. Ayo’s dress is so gorgeous, she looks incredible. I like all these dresses, not boring!

MJ Rodriguez has the greatest legs! Gabrielle Union’s sequined coat dress is gorgeous (that purple tone) and will worn by mothers-of-the-bride/groom from here to eternity.

I love Taylour Paige’s dress, but it would be more appropriate at the premier of The Little Mermaid.

I love the vibe of it and started thinking right away of how to change it to suit me! Get rid of the dragging on the floor bit, less see through, and make it purple!

  4. J. Gerber says:

MJ Rodriguez and Gabrielle Union killed it. Stephanie Hsu just had a guest appearances on Poker Face (I’m obsessed by this show) and she killed it.

To me it looks like Ayo, Stephanie and Dwyane are at different events!

But that’s what sets the Indies apart.

Ayo’s dress is my favorite in this post, still somehow looking like something from before the Indies became just another more or less formal affair.

Or, as Peridot put it, corporate.

All of these pictures remind me that I want to take an actress posing class for a behind the scenes peek at what type of dress inspires what type of pose. I also want to know how an actress’ brand and upcoming projects influence her poses as well since red carpet photos are also marketing and also often collabs with designers.
