2023 Oscar preview: what are your predictions & picks for this year’s races?

The Academy Awards are coming up on Sunday, so I thought we’d do a little preview of coming attractions. Reportedly, they will present all of the awards during the telecast – in recent years, they’ve played around with the format and tried to limit the time for some of the “lower-tier” Oscar categories, but they aren’t doing that this year. Jimmy Kimmel is this year’s host and I suspect he will make some “jokes” about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. Can’t believe it’s only been a year.

Many of the Oscar presenters have been announced, and keep in mind, this year Will Smith isn’t allowed to come back to present Best Actress, as is the tradition for the previous year’s Best Actor winner. So in his place, we’re likely getting Halle Berry. Other presenters include: Mindy Kaling, Pedro Pascal, John Travolta, Paul Dano, Harrison Ford, Cara Delevingne, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Dano, Andie MacDowell, Antonio Banderas, Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Jessica Chastain (reigning Best Actress), Andrew Garfield, Florence Pugh, Elizabeth Banks, Nicole Kidman, Riz Ahmed, Sigourney Weaver, Jennifer Connelly, Samuel L. Jackson, Riz Ahmed (!!), Troy Kotsur (reigning Best Supporting Actor), Jonathan Majors, Michael B. Jordan, Zoe Saldana, Emily Blunt and Melissa McCarthy. There are more names too.

We head into Oscar Sunday will some significantly unsettled races in some of the biggest categories. Having read several of those “Oscar ballot” features, I think the Best Picture race has pretty much settled on Everything Everywhere All At Once, with the Daniels probably winning Best Director too. The only acting category which is settled is Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan – he’s won all of the big awards so far, and every Oscar ballot has him as a lock. My other predictions:

*A complete shut-out for Banshees of Inisherin – I doubt Martin McDonough will even win the screenplay Oscar.

*There will be a shock in one of the lead acting categories – either Brendan Fraser will lose to someone unexpectedly or Cate Blanchett will win Best Actress (which will be a shock because Michelle Yeoh has so much momentum right now).

*The Best Supporting Actress race is SO unsettled, mostly because Angela Bassett and Jamie Lee Curtis are making the same case: they both deserve it, they’ve never won, this would be their lifetime-achievement award, etc. I think it’s going to Jamie Lee, but I also think that there will be so much (justified) anger at denying Angela.

*I lowkey think there will be a shock in Best Adapted Screenplay. I kind of hope Sarah Polley wins for her Women Talking script.

What are your thoughts and predictions??

EEAO best pic, director, lead actress, supporting actor
    Angela for supporting actress
    Austin for actor

  2. Seaflower says:

EEAO best pic & director, lead actress, supporting actor
Angela for supporting actress & Brendan best actor.

    • Normades says:

This is what I want to see. But I have a weird feeling about Austin winning. Hope I’m wrong as I would prefer seeing Brendan get it.

  3. TIFFANY says:

    Actor: Fraser
    Actress: Yeoh
    Supporting: Quan
    Supporting: Bassett
    Director: The Daniels
    Picture: EEAAO

In a just world, this is what will happen but then I remember this is the Academy.

  4. Scarlett says:

    Actor Austin
    Actress Michelle
    Supp Actor Ke Huy
Supp Actress Jamie and Angela, can we just have a tie? I am rooting for both.
Director Spielberg, the academy loves him.
    Picture EEAAO
Song Naatu Naatu, I am biased because the Indian in me and my dad want this song to win.

  5. Josephine says:

I feel like the presenters are definitely skewed toward an older crowd?? Are they trying for some class or nostalgia?

  6. Courtney says:

I think Kerry Condon has a real shot at supporting actress because of the current competition between Jamie Lee Curtis and Angela Bassett, with both being put forward for this award as a lifetime achievement award. I am excited that most of the acting races are so unsettled. It gets boring when the winners are foregone conclusions.

  7. Grant says:

Everyone I’ve seen is predicting Sarah Polley for adapted screenplay so I don’t think that win would be much of a surprise. I’m rooting for Michelle Yeoh for Lead Actress. I can’t decide between Brendan Fraser or Austin Butler in Lead Actor, they were both fantastic. I also can’t decide between JLC and Angela Bassett for Supporting. Kerry Condon was divine in Banshees, and Stephanie Hsu and Hong Chau were both sublime in their supporting roles too. I think my final vote goes to Angela Bassett, but I won’t be upset if anyone in that category wins, TBH. Supporting Actress may be the most exciting category this year. Ke Huy Kwan obviously for Supporting Actor… I can’t wait for his speech!

  8. Kebbie says:

Isn’t Sarah Polley expected to win Adapted Screenplay? I don’t think Fraser is considered even close to being a lock. Best Actor has been all over the place.

  9. Mrs.Krabapple says:

According to the bookies in Las Vegas, EEAO will win all the big ones except best supporting actress, which will be Angela Bassett.

  10. K says:

I kind of think it’s going to Everything having a sweeps across the board night. While Basset and Curtis are both great in their work I just… I don’t know wish that whoever wins best supporting actress in wasn’t a lifetime achievement type of award this year. I think that the nomination for The Whale in this category should win over those two. But If I have to pick between the two then I would go with Curtis only because her movie was at least better.

I also hope that Bulter doesn’t beat Fraser for Best Actor. It’s probably the same reason why Basset and Curtis could get the win with why I’m pulling for Fraser. Fraser has had a longer career and dealt with some BS in the industry. While Bulter is still young and will likely get another chance soon for a win.

    • Normades says:

Yea, I think it’s a a burden and kind of a curse to win an oscar so young. Thinking Adrien Brody or Marissa Tomei. Butler has already shot to the A-list he will get lots of work in the future and definitely another shot at an Oscar.

  11. BQM says:

    Best pic—EEAAO
    Director—The Daniels
Actor—torn between Fraser and butler. Love Fraser and his story but I saw Elvis and butler was so good imo. Just can’t decide.
    Actress—yeoh
    Supporting actor—Ke Huy Quan
Supporting actress—JLC or Bassett. Torn here too. Love them both especially JL since I was a kid. And I love marvel and feel a number of great performances are overlooked because they’re comic books’. I think that bias and the EEAAO energy could favor JL.
    Song—Gaga
