‘Interview with The Vampire’ is replacing Claudia actress Bailey Bass for season two

Interview with the Vampire’s first season should have been a much bigger hit than it was. Possibly a large part of the reason it didn’t catch on was that you can only stream it on AMC+. (My LG TV – which I do not recommend because they have a sh-tton of popups – doesn’t have the AMC+ app, I can only get it on Roku. Plus you can’t get Better Call Saul on AMC+! What is the use of paying for that app then?) IWTV didn’t generate the buzz it would have if it was more widely available. The plot, acting, costuming and settings were fabulous and I’m really looking forward to season two, which just started filming now. Unfortunately there’s news that actress Bailey Bass, 19, is not returning as Claudia for season two. She’s been replaced by actress Delainey Hayles.

“Interview With the Vampire” star Bailey Bass won’t be continuing in the role of Claudia in Season 2 of the AMC Networks show.

Delainey Hayles will take over the role. Production on Season 2 will begin next week in Prague, and the show will also shoot in Paris and New Orleans.

“Due to a variety of unforeseen circumstances I’m unable to return to Anne Rice’s ‘Interview with the Vampire’ for the second season,” Bass said in a statement. “Playing Claudia has been a dream role and an incredible ride. I wish Delainey the best of luck in taking over. I cannot wait to watch. I’m extremely appreciative of AMC, the producers, Jacob, Sam, the crew and, of course, the wonderful fans.”

A spokesperson for AMC added, “Bailey Bass is a talented actor who did a remarkable job bringing the character of Claudia to life in Anne Rice’s ‘Interview with the Vampire.’ For a variety of reasons, Delainey Hayles will appear as Claudia in season two. We are grateful for Bailey’s unforgettable performance in season one and wish her nothing but the best.”

[From Variety]

This is a bummer as I really liked Bailey in that role. She was so convincing as a petulant teen vampire. As Variety goes on to mention, she was in Avatar: Way of the Water. It’s likely Bailey is busy with that franchise now and that’s why she couldn’t continue. AMC and Bailey’s explanations hint at some other issues rather than just scheduling though. They both used the word “variety” in their statements. I wonder if talks fell through in pay negotiations as well. I’m not going to stop watching this show due to the recasting, Delainey might be really good, but it probably won’t be back until next year anyway. They’re not done filming until August.

Thanks to Ameerah for the tip and to Zakia for encouraging me to watch!

I recorded it on YouTube TV queue. I find that You Tube TV is the best streaming service. Spectrum is second cus you don’t need the external apps unless you just want them.

    • The Recluse says:

Yeah, we have YouTube TV too and it’s handy. I had originally recorded it via AMC’s channel, but deleted it because I just was tired of all the super serious vampyr stuff. (Blame True Blood for that.) I just want more of What We Do In The Shadows.

I’ve never seen nor read IWAV.
I think I thought it was horrible miscast, with TC as a vampire? He seemed ridiculous in the role (like with Reacher).

I therefore had no idea this show existed. I am ready for new vampires though! Can’t wait for Renfield. I do love Nicholas Cage’s accent/drawl.

Oh honey. They’re the best vampire books hard stop. She immerses you into the lore like no other author, and this show is slated to span her series with plenty of references. They didn’t fail. Superbly acted and written. I must warn you, however, if you go the way of Rice’s vampires, be prepared to be distracted lol.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

ITA – the books are just sooo rich and she was a master in creating a universe that draws you in.

I also just realised that the same network has done a show on the Mayfair witches.

I was also rather fond of the Ramses the damned series – I need to reread those ones.

Her passing was a loss to the literature world.

    • OriginalLeigh says:

I’m not a Tom Cruise fan but I thought he was great in the original IWTV. If anyone was miscast, it was Brad Pitt… I will definitely check out the series.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Pitt was def miscast – i go between agreeing the TC was cast to thinking he did a good job but I need to rewatch it. Kirsten Dunst as Claudia was a great casting choice as was Antonio Banderas as Armand.

River Phoenix was originally cast as the journalist but he was replaced last min with Christian Slater (who I think would have made a good Louis).

      • Digital Unicorn says:

I meant to type ‘TC was miscast..’

Definitely read the books, Kokiri, they’re a whole new world.

When I first read the books it was when Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp were first becoming popular (early 80’s?). I thought BP should be Lestat and JD as Louis. I was very disappointed in TC as Lestat. I watched the movie once and hated it. I thought Antonio Bandaras as Armand was pretty ridiculous too. Armand was described as a young kid with auburn hair, not a middle aged man.

When I saw Brandon Fraser’s son with the long red hair my first thought was “now THAT’S Armand!”. LOL

I do love the new series. Beautiful people, beautiful clothes, beautiful sets. I was a little disappointed that they’re not following the books exactly like I had read they were going to, but I think they’re doing a great job with it. And still no auburn haired kid for Armand but holy crap is this Armand gorgeous, I’m definitely fine with it. LOL

Noooo… I hate this 😓 She is *perfection* in this role. I’m really going to miss her. She gave the 2 male vampires story texture and her character was infinitely more layered and complex. But, if she is moving onto bigger & better things that will further her carton a way IWAV can’t – good for her. She leaves behind big shoes to be filled

    * I had no idea she was in Avatar WOTW !

“I had no idea she was in Avatar WOTW”

That’s kind of the problem for the new young actors in Avatar, no one really has any idea it’s them! I hope the pay is great because I don’t see any of them getting much of a career boast. I feel for her if Avatar is a big part of why she can’t continue, if this show catches on it’s a star-making part that Avatar just won’t be.

      • BayAreaGirl2000 says:

Here’s the thing. The avatar movies are already filmed. Bailey was already in Prague to start shooting season two, in recent interviews she has stated how much she loves the character, the new scripts and can’t wait to start filming. Then these statements come out about her being replaced?! It seems fishy to me, and I’m heart broke over it because that cast is fabulous.

I wish more tv shows would go back to recasting. Tv shows have been afraid of recasting because of Fandoms. A lot of TV shows would be much better if they swaped some characters. Can’t speak on this show. It sounds like they couldn’t come to terms.
