Even when Twitter has been overrun by Russian operatives, Nazis and racists, it still felt like a platform on which cool people could and would say cool things. There were always fun people to follow, interesting people saying interesting things, and yes, plenty of sh-tposting. But this week, it definitely feels like everything has just become dreadfully uncool. Perhaps even CRINGE. Perhaps even… pathetic. Elon Musk changed the little blue bird icon of Twitter into the Shiba Inu “doge” icon… from the meme which was popular a decade ago. I cannot even imagine being this embarrassing.
Elon Musk is now using the design of Twitter itself to make hilarious (?) jokes.
On Monday, without warning, the iconic Twitter bird logo above the home button on the social network’s web version changed to the “doge” of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency. (Twitter’s mobile apps weren’t changed.) The doge image (of a Shiba Inu) is part of the logo of the Dogecoin blockchain and cryptocurrency, which was created as a joke in 2013 — to mock other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
By way of explaining the Doge logo change on Twitter, Musk, currently the world’s second-richest individual, posted a tweet Monday that said, “As promised” — with a screenshot of an exchange he had in March 2022 with a Twitter user who goes by @WSBChairman.
After Musk tweeted in March 2022, prior to mounting his eventually successful bid to buy Twitter, “Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done?,” @WSBChairman had responded, “just buy twitter… and change the bird logo to a doge.” Musk responded, “Haha that would sickkk.”
What is not meant to be a joke: In June 2022, Musk was on the receiving end of a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York accusing him of engaging in racketeering by promoting Dogecoin. Musk’s legal team filed a motion on Friday, March 31, to have the lawsuit dismissed, per a Reuters report. Among other things, the plaintiffs who sued Musk — seeking an eye-popping $258 billion in damages — pointed to his hosting gig on “SNL,” where on Weekend Update he portrayed a fake financial expert who called Dogecoin a “hustle.”
People are spinning conspiracies about how Musk tied this stupid doge thing to the dogecoin lawsuit, but I don’t even believe that it’s that deep. I think Musk is simply uncool, embarrassing, cringe and pathetic. There is a rumor that he wanted to do this for April Fool’s Day but that the Twitter engineers left at the company couldn’t get it done on time. It’s still there, probably because no one can figure out how to remove it now.
look, it's the exact same user experience it's always been, except verified and paid accounts are identical, retweets don't say retweets anymore, there's a doge icon we can't get rid of, and the site administers a small but painful shock at random intervals

If I’ve learned anything from Succession, it’s that these people really are this clueless and stupid.
You are not serious people.

you are so right! people this rich are not living on the same planet as the rest of us. Reminds me of what Marcia said to Shiv “He made you a playground, and you think it’s a whole world. Go out and see how you like it.”
@sean 💯
All of this comes from a FOOLISH, ARROGANT, and RACIST NARCISSISTIC. He looks INSANE (bad insane) in that get-up plus that dog meme is quite CREEPY-CREEPERTON to me, IMPHO! 😨😫Not surprised about what he is doing at all! 🤷🏽♂️
A shiba inu meme is also used by NAFO (North American Fellas Org), supporters and fundraisers for Ukraine. So a bunch of pro-Russian accounts went nuts, thinking that Elon was now pro-Ukraine. Of course he’s not, but he did manage to tick off those supporters of his very nicely.
haha…really? Piss off his investors aka the Putin supporters unintentionally? i love that for him then.
So glad you mentioned NAFO and the #Fellas! You’re right, they’ve raised a load of money for Ukraine and the russian [sic] supporters’ comments were hilarious. They thought the Fellas had hacked Twitter, so funny.
I’m glad this was covered because I could not for the life of me figure what the heck was going on.
I couldn’t either. I only was seeing the dog when I filed reports on bad behavior and initially thought Twitter had been hacked
I too thought the same! Lol.
Top pic is giving cockroach cornered by a can of Raid 🪳
😂😂😂
…I can’t just scroll past this comment without acknowledging its greatness.
I won’t look at that photo the same way ever again!
I have been baffled by his costume since last year but you absolutely nailed it.
It’s all about the $$$$ and the LOLZ with Musk. He’s a guy in his 50s who really gets off on posing in a Party City gladiator outfit.
Elon is doing the most to force the SEC to regulate crypto.
Credit where it’s due, I guess.
When this popped up first thing this morning I was like, WITAF!? 🫤
It reminds me of the movie Hostel. Remember their icon was a bloodhound. I can’t fathom all the evil rich people do and are into.
I just take comfort in knowing this idiot drunk shopped a company and paid 44 billion on a 20 billion value. And couldn’t get out of it knowing it was a bad deal. And the Doge is dumb.
What is more interesting is that he made the Twitter code open source yesterday, hoping to get some coders to improve on it, since he fired most of the department. The “problem” is that he revealed Twitter’s algorithms, and showed its biases towards platforming right wing fascists, Putin over Ukraine, etc. Read some of the analyses from coders (I am not one; I just read about it), and it’s scary how much influence and power is being manipulated at Twitter. The fact that he would make it open source was just about the stupidest thing he could have ever done.
If I could ‘like’ and retweet this comment, I would. 🙂
The real story is that poor employee(s) who had to read that email and follow through.
