Lady Gaga looking normal and performing a Led Zeppelin cover in 2006

Video has surfaced on YouTube of Stefani Germanotta – now known as Lady Gaga – performing a cover of Led Zeppelin’s ‘D’yer Maker’ in New York City in January 2006. And she looks like a normal person! Nothing like the paper doll of little children’s nightmares like she sort of does now. Okay that’s harsh… but her look is unusual, and hard to describe. She’s always in costume, but not in a Barbie sort of way. Thus… paper dolls, I guess.

The video is really interesting to watch, partly because of how normal she looks and behave, and partly because you can see these bits of the performer she would eventually become. She’s really belting out the song, and at several points does some of her strange, Lady Gaga-esq dance moves. I’m not sure that they’re really dance moves here – it just seems like the way she’s getting really into the song. Which actually comes across as really awkward, cheesy, and overdone in the “I’m singing a cover of Led Zeppelin” context. But it is amusing, if nothing else.

She is famed for her outrageous costumes, bright blonde hair and kooky performances. But four years ago Lady GaGa looked rather ordinary. A recently discovered video shows the star, real name Stefani Germanotta, performing Led Zeppelin’s ‘D’yer Maker’ in New York in January 2006.

And with her long dark hair and unremarkable outfit of vest top, leggings and white heeled boots, there is little to show the outrageous star she would become. But her voice, keyboard skills and a little spark in her performance give a clue that she will become a huge chart-topping hit. The video shows her performing with a band at the Bitter End venue. Among her bandmates are Calvin Pia of Akudama on guitar, Alex Beckmann of Mem on drums, and Eli Silverman on bass.

The video, which has been posted on YouTube, was originally found on the band website of her former guitarist. They said: ‘Before the paparazzi, Akudama’s very own Calvin Pia had been blessed with the opportunity to take the stage with mega-star-to-be, Lady Gaga. The video might be a little toned down for all you “Gagas” out there.’ The band added: ‘The performance is as entertaining as watching Henry Fonda pick blueberries, which is honest to god a ten out of ten by Bitter End standards. Enjoy?’

The performance is in marked contrast to GaGa’s performance in Francesco Vezzoli’s ‘Ballets Russes Italian Style (The Shortest Musical You Will Never See Again)’ in Los Angeles on Saturday night. There she donned a huge silver hat, heavy eye make-up and a chiffon and crystal dress to sit down at a pink grand piano painted with blue butterflies.

[From the Daily Mail]

When I watched the video, part of me was actually sad for Lady Gaga. I get that she’s very into her character, but it seems like that’s come at the total expense of the real human being you can see in this video. I don’t even think of Lady Gaga is an actual living, breathing person. She’s this invented character. It’s bizarre to see a video of a girl I could pass on the street and not even notice. In a good way, of course.

A lot of people have said Lady Gaga dresses the way she does to hide the fact that her looks are plain. From this video, I wouldn’t say she’s plain, she just looks a little unusual. But like a normal person who has potential. I think the outfits and makeup are probably things she’s always aspired to and it’s just part of who she is, but they’re not a conscious attempt to distract us from some blandness.

Normal?! Yes… it is normal for Narnia.

  2. Praise St. Angie! says:

HA! I got all excited to see she was at the Bitter End! I love that place, and a lot of my friends have played there.

great small club to check out when you’re in NYC!

  3. Alarmjaguar says:

I don’t know, as a performer, it might be easier to deal with the fame and craziness with an stage persona or alter ego. I’d find it kind of comforting to be able to stop being Lady Gaga and get back to being Stefani (and people probably would just walk right past her on the street).

  4. different says:

She sounds good here she’s got a great voice

  5. fizXgirl314 says:

jesus chris, she sucks… how did this woman make it?

  6. Firestarter says:

    NO NOT LED ZEPPELIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BLASPHEMOUS!

  7. wow says:

LMBO @ “M” -normal for Narnia.

I love La Gaga. SHe actually has talent. She is a bit OTT in her appearance, but her talent can not be denied.

I like her “performance art”. I saw some interview she did overseas and she just came across as very genuine and down to Earth.

  8. christie says:

She did a good job with the cover. The guitarist is the one who massacred the song.

I like Gaga. She’s different, and she’s talented.

  9. trishy says:

here’s some more early Gaga before Gaga: performing in a talent contest at NYU.

  10. Alison E says:

I think she goes home at night and puts on fluffy pajamas and big eighties style Mrs. Doubtfire glasses and reads Sartre or something.

Occasionally she laughs all the way to the bank.

  11. AC says:

I like that Lady Gaga is basically a charicter. It’s SOOO much easier to indulge in the music that way. Its like Ziggy Stardust or something. Its so much fun. I love her.

  12. Rosalee says:

Firestarter I’m glad you said it because I cannot express my thoughts at this moment, oh lordy..my gosh.

  13. WTF?!? says:

It’s just her gimmick, her schtick, and the fact that she actually has talent is the bonus. She’s a very down-to-earth, regular, thoughtful, sweet girl.
No one ponders whether Dame Edna or other performers known for their manufactured characters are masking anything. AC- Ziggy Stardust popped into my mind, too.

  14. DarkAngle says:

She is original and Talented… more then we can say for many new artists these days, how many ppl are actually doing her same style! we need diversity in our music, and Gaga does it!

  15. Emily says:

@WTF?!?, Barry Humphries is pretty well known in his normal appearance. It’s just not as fabulous as Dame Edna-or as attractive, honestly. He grosses me out.

  16. orion70 says:

i’m with fizXgirl314 , she sounds way off key to me.

and lol @ christie….yeah….it was the guitarist who massacred it…..right…

  17. Bete says:

    Give her a break.
Just goes to show that ‘time’ is unfair. She has more talent than what Madonna did when she first debuted. I feel cheated.

  18. Yae says:

I really enjoy her, but she looks like she has to pee.

  19. WTF?!? says:

Emily– maybe in Australia and Europe he’s well-known outside of drag, but most Americans don’t know who Barry Humphries is, and the few that have seen him out of costume would never guess he’s straight.
And yes, he is a bit creepy.

  20. Vermithrax says:

Wow that was so much nicer than the new.. uh, configuration. Good find 🙂

  21. Baho says:

    oh BARF!

“do you guys like reggae?” “do you like Led Zeppelin?” WTF – she has to ‘explain’ Dyermaker to the audience?

Obviously Dreadlock Holiday is out of her league.

Anyway, she can’t sing live (without an octave shifter & backing track) which means she can’t sing.

GaGa is a biter. She doesn’t have ‘influences’ in the artistic sense, she’s blatantly ripping off and retailing what innovative artists have already done.

She needs to bow down before Grace Jones and before she does that she can lay a wreath at Josephine Baker’s grave right before she blows Kraftwerk and gives it up to Devo.

  22. Trillion says:

Ouch. That band. Cheesy dudes. Cheesy choice. When you do a cover, you should at least try to make it your own somehow. These guys remind me of dudes that hang out in Guitar Center and play Led Zep and Hendrix riffs all afternoon. She had to start somewhere though.

  23. M says:

OMG! Please not Led Zeppelin! It’s a travesty, my ears are bleeding!

  24. Babs says:

    Oh. My. God.

Good God man, I remember the first time I ever heard a Lady Gaga song. It was also the first time I almost crashed a car. Her hit tune, ‘Poke Her Face’ came on and I lunged to change the radio station with such force that I jammed my finger pushing the radio’s tuner button and hurt myself. Then, after that, I looked up at the road to see that I was headed into the median of the highway. So, I jerked the wheel just in time to avoid hitting the median, and instead almost swerved into a van traveling in the lane beside me.

Lady Gaga almost caused an accident. She could have killed me with her singing. I should sue her.

How I hate Lady Gaga. Someone should beat her for singing a Led Zeppelin song. For, how is it so that someone who I hate (Lady Gaga) could sing a song that belongs to someone who I love (Led Zeppelin)?

It’s wrong in every way, and it’s very, very sad.

Also, what are you insulating by her being, as you call it, ‘plain.’

Why, exactly, would someone who thought they were ugly wear so many weird outfits, and apply such terrifying makeup? Are you suggesting that she’s trying to make herself look uglier the she actually is? If so, why doesn’t she just get plastic surgery like a normal person and have everything on her face fixed so that she looks better?

Or, are you suggesting that she is attempting to take ugly so far that it actually becomes pretty? Is that even possible? Are extremely ugly people actually what we consider to be ‘beautiful?’ Are extremely beautiful people ugly? Are these philosophical questions that I’m asking?

Also, is that what she’s doing with her music? Is she singing songs so bad they that are somehow good? Frankly, as far as I am concerned, the only ‘good’ part of a Lady Gaga song is the part when it ends, as the feeling of relief is so wonderful and then the silence that follows is so lovely, it really makes one remember how pleasant quiet really is.

  25. Tracy Vaiuso says:

wow. Cant believe its the same person. Music style is so different than now! I like the original… but I have to say it might not be that her style changed to sell records, but perhaps her taste?

  26. frank vaiuso says:

I agree with Tracy Vaiuso, her taste is changing.
2011 should get the attention of many more with her creative ways. frank vaiuso/Maui
