Nicholas Hoult lost out on roles in The Batman, MI7 and Top Gun: Maverick

Nicholas Hoult is still promoting Renfield, the horror-comedy loosely based on Dracula. As it turns out, Renfield was probably what Hoult filmed instead of The Batman, Mission Impossible 7 and Top Gun: Maverick. That’s right, Hoult auditioned for roles in those movies and he didn’t get them. Strange world, because I think Hoult is actually one of the finest actors of his generation? He has incredible range – he can do straight drama, romantic lead, comedy, sci-fi, whatever you’ve got. He recently spoke to GQ Spain about losing out on the role of Batman to Robert Pattinson:

Nicholas Hoult confirmed in a recent interview with The Guardian that he lost out on roles in “The Batman,” “Mission: Impossible 7” and “Top Gun: Maverick” all in a row. In a new interview with GQ España, the actor stressed that he is “happy” with his career despite these “disappointments.” Hoult also went into a bit more detail about the experience of losing the title role in “The Batman” to Robert Pattinson.

“Of course,” Hoult said when asked if he would’ve liked to play Bruce Wayne/Batman. “I’m sure if you ask most people, they’ll tell you they’d want to portray that role. I think Matt Reeves’ ideas were fantastic and he made a brilliant movie. And I also think that Rob [Pattinson] did an amazing job with the character, and I loved seeing him in it. So I don’t think I would have done as good a job as him ultimately. I don’t think I could have fit as well into the world that Matt created as Rob did.”

“When they tell you for the first time that it’s not you, it’s painful, but then you have to accept it as normality,” Hoult continued. “I think that’s probably a strength of mine as an actor as well. I can accept that they didn’t cast me pretty well and when I see the chosen actor doing a great job, and I enjoy it, and it’s good, I’m like, ‘oh yeah, they made the right choice. They knew what they were doing.’ So it’s not like I’m sitting there like, ‘Oh, I’m not going to watch it now.’ It’s a good movie and Rob is brilliant in it.”

[From Variety]

When Pattinson’s casting as Batman was first announced, people were surprised – post-Twilight, Rob definitely leaned into indie films and weirder, offbeat stuff. To see him take the lead in a major production with a lot of money on the line… it seemed out of character. But he explained that he usually goes with his instincts, and he really pursued the project. He was fine as Batman, but the film is structured in such a way that I think Hoult would have also been fine in it? Like, Hoult could have pulled it off, easily. Oh well – I think Hoult is probably happier doing offbeat stuff, but why are all of these Hollywood producers sleeping on Hoult? If the man wants to make an MI or Top Gun movie, let him!

Nicholas would have been better in The Batman. Seriously.

Robert getting the part will forever be a head scratcher.

At least Nick would have had better chemistry with Zoe.

  2. Dara says:

He is at the top of my list for the next James Bond so I’m glad he didn’t get MI7. And honestly, he’s too tall to stand in the same frame as Tom Cruise so his odds of getting cast in either of his movies weren’t very good to begin with.

    • Josephine says:

I did not see the new Top Gun but I feel like that Miles Teller (who I find awful) is really tall??

      • Dara says:

He is. I only noticed they were standing next to each other where you could see both of them, feet and all, maybe once or twice, and very quickly. Now I’m curious, I may have to watch it again. I’m not a huge fan of Teller, but I liked him in that movie.

In the original Top Gun, Goose was on the tall side, and since Teller plays his son it makes sense to cast a taller actor. Back then, Cruise wasn’t the major superstar he is now so probably didn’t have veto power on who his co-stars were. Once that changed, he hasn’t appeared with many people that are noticeably taller than he is.

  3. HeyKay says:

I can see NH as Batman, he’d be interesting.
NH would have brought some edge to Top Gun 2 but of course, Tom Cruise would not cast him, he’d have taken attention away from Tom.
Miles Teller and that Glenn Whathisname were the most bland, generic, blends in he could find to fill the roles.
And we all know Tom Cruise is The Star.
Even Henry Cavill knew it when he signed on for MI:Fallout. This is a Tom Cruise film, you are support for him and in all the PR, you hype Tom.

RPatz, I have never understood his appeal in any movie.

    • Smart&Messy says:

I agree with everything you said. In addition, Teller is very bland but resembles young Anthony Edwards quite a bit in the movie. That might have been a factor in his casting.

i actually liked Rob P in the new batman. I thought his whole moody slightly weird vibe fit well with the batman they wanted to show which was this kinda loner weirdo billionaire. nick is a great actor and i’m sure he’ll have plenty more opportunities. i wonder if ppl just don’t see him in “action man” roles bc he’s lost out on all of those movie roles that were all action oriented. he was in x-men…but he played the brainy guy who turned blue. not really the “brawn” hero.

    • Bread and Circuses says:

I agree; they wanted an emo, goth Batman, and Pattinson was that. He had the jaw and gravitas, but was also capable of looking sickly and sad as Bruce Wayne.

As Nicholas Hoult (who I love) said, Pattinson was a great fit for the type of movie they were trying to make this time — which was a different beast than what many of the previous Batman movies have tried to be.

  5. Sass says:

More like THEY lost out, because Hoult is a fckin treasure.

  6. Sof says:

Nicholas is a great actor, I wonder if his role in X-Men had something to do with him not getting the Batman role. Are studios ok with having the same actor in multiple franchises?
Also, season three of The Great is coming up soon, I wonder how long that series is going to be?

  7. Kirsten says:

I have to disagree. I find Nicholas Hoult to be almost unwatchable. I honestly can’t imagine him having roles in any of those movies.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I kinda agree. But I normally have a problem with young, hot men. Their narcissism is a huge problem lol. Normally, they age out of that ‘give it to me, because I’m so hot,’ thing. It’s unfortunate though, if they do NOT age out of me, me, me.

  8. Meg says:

Just saw the Renfield movie he did with nic cage as dracula, Nicholas is still really hot, distracting honestly as we watched

  9. SarahCS says:

We recently watched the new Mad Max film and I had absolutely no idea he was playing one of the main characters until we got to the credits, while I wasn’t a fan of the film I thought he was great in it.

  10. Eden75 says:

Batman is my fav of all of the superhero’s and NH would have been a great choice. Pattinson was horrible. I still haven’t finished watching that movie, it was so dull.

I enjoy Nicholaus in anything he is in. Please cast him more!!!!

  11. j.ferber says:

    He’s a mighty fine-looking dude.

  12. Digital Unicorn says:

I like him and am glad he doing well in his career – he has a Sherlock Holmes vibe about him and am not sure I could see him as Batman but those movies are not my thing. The last time I watched a Batman movie was when Michael Keaton played him and I have always adored him.

  13. Elba says:

Hoult does not have THE jawline, also while he can convincingly play psychotic, he’s not intimidating in a batman-esque composed way, I can see why they went with Pattinson.

    • Sudie says:

Yes, I absolutely agree about Pattinson over Hoult. With all this Hoult love on the board, I wonder where all his fans where when all his movies failed at the box office and/or critically failed. Hoult is strictly a supporting actor in most every movie he’s done. He doesn’t have the “it” or star power to be a leading man in a huge movie production, why do you think he’s never been chosen for a leading role before? He is an excellent character actor and has great comedic timing but could not pull off a lead role in a big film, heck even Pattinson was iffy in that respect.
As far as Tom Cruise, he is on record as saying that he liked Nicholas Hoult a lot and wanted him in Top Gun but Hoult’s schedule with The Favorite was the reason he wasn’t able to take the part. He was up for the part that Miles Teller eventually took on. Cruise has had many co-stars that were taller than him, including women.

  14. AC says:

I think either NH or RP would have been a toss up for me playing Batman. I like them both and they’re in the same range of acting and usually play American roles. But I don’t think they have the old school megastar power that Tom Cruise, the Rock, Denzel, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks etc that usually brings a lot of people to the movies.
