Cate Blanchett wore custom Louis Vuitton looks in Cannes: love them or hate them?

Cate Blanchett went to the Cannes Film Festival to premiere her latest film, The New Boy, directed by Warwick Thornton. It’s set in Australia during WWII and critics aren’t completely sold on it. LOL, Cate plays a nun!! I suspect that Cate wasn’t just invited to Cannes simply for this promotion though – she’s under contract with Louis Vuitton now (she’s the LV “house ambassador”) and she seems to be taking something of a victory lap too. While she didn’t win the Oscar for Tar, she won a lot of awards for her brilliant performance, and she’s simply a film-festival favorite no matter what. She even stuck around Cannes to attend the premiere of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and she got some award at the Variety party and made a point of honoring the women of Iran.

So, yes, Cate wore various Louis Vuitton ensembles in Cannes and I kind of hate all of them! LV is not my taste, honestly, although I think it’s interesting to see how often Louis Vuitton makes customized looks for their ambassadors and big-name models. They did the same with Cate – during the awards season, Cate made a point of recycling and upcycling previous red carpet gowns, to showcase environmentalism in fashion. She wore “new” pieces in Cannes this year – but new pieces with a twist. One of Cate’s LV gowns in Cannes was made from “existing fabric” at LV. As in, she had a dress made out of LV’s fabric remnants. That’s kind of cool.

I actually dislike all of her looks and I usually live everything she wears in the red carpet or on a photo call. Who well. She’s still Cate the Great.

  2. tolly says:

The hip flounces on the velvet and satin one are completely different sizes, right? Both red carpet gowns look like losing looks from the same Project Runway challenge.

All of the outfits are terrible. The blue stripped pant/top could be salvaged if the belt was either all black or all silver; the mix just looks awful.

I still don’t know *why* she gets a pass from everyone when any other Woody Allen/Roman Polanski supporter that was featured on this site was always blasted. FFS, she even *named* her kid *after* Polanski!

I just can’t have any respect for this woman.

She also gave support to one of her Australian representatives who husband when arrested on trial for sexually assaulting a child and the wife ( Cate Australian representative) was blaming the child and calling her all types of horrible names.

I have no use for her either. None.

  4. First one saddle bags? Second one strange pockets? That’s all I got.

    • kirk says:

      Saddle bags 😆 !
Actually bags look like a bow from the back, how versatile 🙄
Fortunately they gave her some pajamas so she can go hide in bed afterwards.

    It’s all awful.

  6. HeyKay says:

None of these are attractive. Not one.
The black with poofy white bags is especially ugly.
    Even the shoes are awful.

I’m ready to see less of CB.
She and Emma Thompson, both talented but seem to be at every event lately.

  7. Pinkosaurus says:

The one with the black vee design and cape looks like a second-tier superhero. Maybe Captain Pockets who can pull whatever is necessary out of her dress like Mary Poppins bag? So unappealing and not fun or interestingly weird which she does so well.

    • SarahCS says:

I agree on the dress opinion but would also like to put a vote in to make Captain Pockets a new superhero. Unless she already exists out there every time a woman is complemented on a dress and responds with the obligatory IT HAS POCKETS. Then Captain Pockets flies off to improve another item of woman’s clothing in another town or city.

  8. Gabby says:

    OMG BAD BAD BAD outfits.
That top dress, WTF is going on? It looks like overly fancy drapes that got stuck in a rope and bunch up more and more as you pull the rope.

  9. Kirsten says:

I really like the two dresses on her — I’m not sure anyone else could pull them off. Maybe Tilda Swinton? The blue outfit is bananas — it has two belts? She’s wearing fancy pajamas with clogs? Not even she can save this look.

Aaaah, I was hoping Celebitchy would get to cover the Cannes fashion ☺️ It has been spectacular so far – the men in particular are bringing it! Hope to see more of these pictures beyond Cate (who I think is perfection in the second dress, the one with the cape)

  11. Ameerah M says:

I love both looks on her. I don’t think I would love them on anyone else. But Cate can pull off a LOT.

  12. Eurydice says:

Lol, the patch pockets remind me of my grandmother’s “house dresses.” They never came with pockets, so she would chop up an old house dress and sew giant pockets onto the front of the new ones. The fabrics never matched, but I suppose that would be high fashion today.

  13. Lululu says:

NO to all of these. Ugh. LV should stick to handbags and luggage.

  14. Shawna says:

The silver belt that’s hanging down instead of serving as a belt looks like one of those decorative rain-diverting thingies that people hang from their roofs.

  15. Mrs.Krabapple says:

I will admit that Cate Blanchett is a very talented actor. She is also tall, blond, and thin, so of course she will be admired for her looks as well (which is very important in Hollywood). But I am *baffled* by how she seems to avoid any backlash for her love of Roman Polanski (she even named her son after him) and Woody Allen, when other celebrities are rightfully called out for it. I guess she must have a really good publicist. But it just makes me dislike her even more.

It looks like she wearing velvet curtains from Target and white bed sheets together from Walmart, basically cheap and tacky.
