Daniel Day Lewis wrote Fergie love letters in character on set of ‘Nine’

We all know Daniel Day Lewis is a strange (yet hot) bird. His big film role this year is as Italian director Guido in Nine, where he’s surrounded by the Oscar-winning likes of Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard and Penelope Cruz. As a matter of fact, only two of the main “women” are non-Oscar winners – Kate Hudson and Fergie, who plays a prostitute Guido knew in childhood. Fergie also sings (kills, in a good way) “Be Italian”, the first song that was released on the first trailer. As Fergie is out promoting Nine, she admitted to feeling out of her element of the film set, but says Daniel Day Lewis would write her beautiful little encouraging notes, in character as Guido. Isn’t that sweet?

Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie discovered first-hand the method acting madness of her ‘Nine’ co-star Daniel Day-Lewis when she received love letters from the eccentric actor written as his character Guido. “Daniel is very charming. I’d go into my dressing room, and I’d find this little note. I’d open it, and it would be Guido’s stationary. He would write me little notes as Guido. They were very cute and very charming,” Fergie revealed at a press conference on November 15 at The Waldorf Astoria in New York.

Billed as Stacy Ferguson, Fergie makes her film debut playing the Italian vamp Saraghina performing the song ‘Be Italian’ as she taunts and teases the filmmaker Guido as a young boy. She dove into the world of ‘Nine’ watching every variation of the Federico Fellini film ‘8 1/2,’ but her preparation for the role couldn’t subside the nervousness she felt joining A-list actresses Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Penelope Cruz and Judi Dench.

She recalls, “Going into this musical, I’m definitely the singer coming into this A-list acting world, so it was intimidating for me flying over and knowing that I was going to be amongst these people who were at the top of their game in their field. I thought maybe I’ll just sit in the corner and kind of be a sponge and not speak and watch how they hone their craft.”

But Fergie had to push aside her fears quickly. “The first person I met was Daniel. It was 15 minutes later where I had to belt out the song right in front of him. I’ve admired his work for years, and I just had to push through it and say, ‘What the hell.’ I was very hungry for this role, and I went after it. I definitely have caught the bug because it’s another way to express yourself, and I’m an artist.”

‘Nine’ will open in limited theaters in New York and Los Angeles on December 18th and nationwide December 4th.

That’s how hardcore method actor Daniel is – he gets stationary in his characters’ names and leaves in-character notes for his costars. He’s amazing. Daniel also told Oprah last week that he watched all of the girls rehearse – he would just sit in a corner, in character as Guido, and watch them all do their stuff. That’s pretty amazing too. As far as Fergie’s first movie role second movie role and everything, I’m only judging her from the one song and the trailers, but I think she knocked it out of the park. She looks different, and her voice is amazing. In a few months, will it be “Fergie, Oscar Nominee”?

Actually NINE is not her film debut. She was in that Tarantino film a few years back.

    I like her.

  2. Rae says:

It’s not technically her first movie role. She had a bit part in Poseidon. There was really no acting, but she was in the movie.

  3. K says:

Uh, did everyone forget about Fergie’s role in Grindhouse? The lesbian lover who gets killed before she even gets to speak? It’s not her first time in a movie.

  4. Pont Neuf says:

This film looks like it will be really great, although I must admit that I’m a bit apprehensive whenever a singer tries to act… Anyway, Fergie does have a really nice voice and seems to be quite expressive, Daniel Day Lewis is a FANTASTIC actor and the story seems to be beautiful, so I’ll eagerly wait to watch it until it is premiered.

  5. kripsgerl says:

Kate hudson is any oscar winner for that cameron crowe movie

  6. Dee says:

at #5- She is oscar nominated for Almost Famouse- not a winner

  7. lolo says:

I like her too. I hope she gets that Daniel Day Lewis man because he is way better than that ass whipe she is with now.

The small notes were such a cool idea. I have never found DDL physically attractive in person, but on film he is magnetic. He seems like an interesting person.

  9. fizXgirl314 says:

I have been doing some reading on DDL because he’s one of the few actors I actually like… His movies are really interesting and he’s very intense… apparently, he’s a true nutball… he takes method acting to an extreme, sleeping in a prison for 3 days for one of his movies, living on the beach for another and being majorly aggressive to his coworkers for his role as bill the butcher in gangs of new york…

lolo, fergie will NEVER be worthy of someone like DDL who has a personality and a character beyond showing his goods to the world… I don’t think someone who sings about her “lady lumps” and her “fergieliciousness” is DDL’s caliber… this guy actually has some substance, unlike fergie who is just a ho… these two are about as far apart on the evolutionary spectrum as possible… though DDL was a bit of a cad in his earlier love life… he’s still a genius and a true artist…

besides, I don’t think DDL has ever peed his pants on stage… :/

  10. Sumodo says:

Josh Duhamel is T-O-A-S-T. WTF does she need that douche for, when she has a budding film career, is surrounded by REAL actors, has interesting, sophisticated new friends, and can sing better than 99.9 percent of the world population. Josh, Josh, Josh. Pack your things and go. Wifey has that sweet smell of success and you smell like a shitheel.

  11. No Sensi says:

    lol @Sumodo

  12. Ling says:

I’m not enamored of DDL. He’s good, but not the best actor in the world. At best, all this “hardcore”/”method” phooey is, in my opinion, a mask for his social awkwardness, antisocial tendencies at the very least. At worst, it’s pompous assiness. I mean, how does Rebecca feel about all this? What do you suppose this (it must be said) mental instability does to his family?

Listen… I’m as hot for him as the next chick. But the guy’s a wierdo.

  13. juiceinla says:

Holy schnickes- her voice sounds amazing. I am blown away. an Oscar nod for the song? perhaps. Nothing else though, I am sure. I had no interest in this before, Now I will definitely go see it .

  14. Ana says:

She looks so rough in this film. Esp. compared to Nicole (and I never think she is gorgeous but in this film WOWZA!) and Penelope! In the second picture I always think it’s La Toya Jackson!
I think she should get laser hair removal on her forehead to raise her hairline. I think it would help.

  15. roberta says:

I used to think Josh and fergie were great together, but he does not deserve Fergie. She is a very sweet, humble and intelligent person who truly seems to think things through.

She planned her wedding to make sure Josh’s wishes were totally respected and he trashes his wedding vows. Fergtie is 1000 times more talented and can be a huge star in he movies, he will only hold her back.
I would love to see her with DDL or some other mature man, not some man who chases sleazy cheap strippers while she works her butt off.

  16. vera says:

Fergie is supposed to look rough. If you have seen Nine the musical her role is just that. Umm I don’t think DDL thinks he is too good for Fergie HE was one of the people choosing to work with her.

Fergie is a talented hard worker and how is she a whore? She is married to a man whore but not a whore.

  17. ViktoryGin says:

    @ Ling

For anyone who has doubts about the massive theatrical talent this man possesses I challenge you to watch “There Will Be Blood” and juxtapose it to his performance in Martin Scorcese’s “The Age of Innocence” as a testament to the man’s phenomenal range and his superior ability to inhabit a character. A great many actors (actors, not movie stars) ARE socially awkward and they use acting as means to process themselves. And as far as his wife…she’s the daughter of Henry Miller. I’m sure she’s adept at handling artistic awkwardness.

  18. Frewt says:

Totally Ana. Her hair line is so low it makes her look simian – the physical embodiment of the expression ‘low brow’. Raising it would really improve her looks. Hair line modification was very common in the old days of Hollywood.

  19. NicoleAM says:

Uh, Fergie is not walking off anytime soon with DDL. He has a wife and kids and it all appears pretty happy and stable. (Which doesn’t stop me from an occasional fantasy…)

  20. jayem says:

Wow, she looks really good here. Better than she’s looked in a long time. I’m excited to see this one. Quite a cast!

  21. fizXgirl314 says:

exactly Viktory! This guy si a genius… and like all geniuses, he’s likely very strange… but, I love reading about such people… they providing the most interesting biographies…

Fergie might be talented, but again, DDL and she are on completely different ends of the intelligence spectrum as far as I am concerned…

  22. cubesque says:

Viktory: Rebecca Miller is the daughter of playwright Arthur Miller, not Henry Miller (noted painter & novelist).

  23. Ling says:

@ Viktory: Granted, granted, granted… but allow me to sum up with a quote from Lawrence Olivier to Dustin Hoffman, upon finding him sleeping on set in his own feces as a part of his “method”:

“Have you tried ACTING, my dear boy?”

  24. fizXgirl314 says:

I really don’t think it’s about the “acting”. With some people, it’s a matter of self expression… haven’t you guys ever read books about people who are incredibly intelligent who exhibit wildly eccentric behavior? One such interesting guy is Tesla I believe… another is Leonardo Da Vinci… another is Tolstoy…

I’m sure it is somewhat inexplicable, but there are just some people who pass through the universe and follow the beat of their own very strange drum… I believe DDL is one of those people…

You simply cannot uphold them to “normal” standards… these people are interesting, to say the least… and I find it really sad that people want to squash them down to the level of the countless other everyday boring humans… yeah like, we don’t have enough of those *eyeroll*

  25. Francesca says:

Fergie can sing but her face- ugh! what is up?? Is it all the previous coke? She always looks botoxed, lifted and tired under it all.
