Margot Robbie wore a pink Balmain to the Mexico ‘Barbie’ premiere: very ’80s?

I’ve been incredibly impressed with Margot Robbie as a producer, and I’ve enjoyed her early promotion for Barbie. Margot, more than anyone, put the movie together. She was the one who brought in Greta Gerwig. Margot was the one meeting with Mattel executives and running interference so that Gerwig’s vision could come to life. Margot was the one insisting on a feminist message and an inclusive, positive message too. Not only that, but now she has to promote the damn thing and dress up like Barbie for the whole promotional tour.

So, these are photos from the Mexico premiere of Barbie. America Ferrera came to this premiere, as did Ryan Gosling (who is one of the Kens). Margot wore a Barbie-pink Balmain, which… it’s okay. The thing about the whole Barbiecore trend is that we’ve already seen much better pink dresses for the past year. There’s an aspect of “been there, done that already” to some of this sartorially. That being said, I enjoy the vintage feel of the look and the styling. People are calling this “1990s Barbie,” but it feels more ‘80s to me – like, Madonna/Barbie/1980s.

Which is why I’m also including some photos of Margot from last week’s Australian premiere event. Margot didn’t go for the default Barbie-pink dress, she went for a Versace minidress in a sparkly silver-pink. This convinces me that Margot isn’t just going to do flat pink looks the whole tour – she’s actually going to wear looks which would have appeared in Barbie’s wardrobe.

Her stylist, Andrew Mukamal, has been doing an amazing job. They planned her fits’ for this tour for months and it shows. She’s worn quite a few reproductions of actual Barbie outfits and it’s been amazing to see. They also had a bunch of shoes made similar to Barbie’s slip on high heel mules in various shades of pink, as well as white and black. I love how much Margot has leaned into the Barbie vibe.

Margot Robbie is dressed up as ‘Earring Magic Barbie’ which was very popular in
the 90s, including ‘Earring Magic Ken’ who is considered the first gay (LGBTIQA+) Barbie doll. See link to view the original ‘Earring Magic Barbie’: https://www.b-dollsplanet.de/en/Barbie-Raritaeten-12/Earring-Magic-Barbie.html

I just googled Earring Magic Ken and it’s so gay it’s fabulous. I’m a bit disappointed by Gosling’s outfit now. I guess it would have been too much to have them both cosplaying the whole promo tour.

My fave outfit from Australia was the Herve Leger black and white dress at Bondi. It referenced the very first Barbie without being as literal as some of her other outfits.

The first look is totally ’90s. The sparkly one is more ’80s, with the bustier.

Yeah, back in the ’90s if men had earrings, people thought they were gay. Ken has always seemed super gay to me. They had those ones with the long combable hair and sideburns back in the ’70s which always read as gay to me too.

She has looked amazing during the promo and it’s been brilliant in so many ways. I’m actually looking forward to seeing this.

Margot Robbie and her stylist are KILLLLING these looks! I almost want a pair of those barbie mules! This definitely says early 90’s to me, including the hair texture. I can’t wait for this movie!!

They advertise that movie so hard I’m already sick of it.

  3. Gnv says:

Love it! It flatters her figure (she really does have an incredible figure).

Is America Ferrera playing a villain? Why are her clothes decidedly…somber in comparison?

    • Cee says:

I guess bc she plays an actual human (her character “owned” the Barbie Margot portrays) Notice how those portraying Barbies and Ken are in much vivid colours

      • Gnv says:

Oh I see. I’ve avoided the trailers because I want to go in spoiler-free.

I love the black outfit in the header pic, with the leather skirt and puffy top. It’s great.

    • Plums says:

I don’t think America Ferrera is playing a villain, but according to the trailers, it looks like she’s the main female character who is from the real world and isn’t a Barbie, so she’s not wearing any Barbie looks for the promo.

I can’t wait for this movie, or to do the double feature with Oppenheimer. The only question is which film is first and which is second. I’m thinking Oppenheimer/ cocktail and snack break/ Barbie with a couple of drinks in us.

This looks like such a fun summer movie, I want to see it, and yes she’s probably not going to be able to wear anything pink for quite a while after all these promotions are over.
    I’m enjoying it.

I’m a sucker for the star belt so I’m very into it. Margot’s clothes have been on point. But Issa and America have also been doing really good looks.

    • BothSidesNow says:

Agreed!! I love both of Americas looks and Issa looks great here too!!

This outfit is an homage to 1992’s Earring Magic” Barbie. My personal fave is the Day To Night Barbie look, in Korea, as we had that Barbie in my home, and she long inspired me to attain office-to-hot date looks in all my fantasy work wear.

i saw a tweet that said- the devil works hard, the Barbie marketing department works harder.
I have LOVED all these Barbie outfits that someone is re-creating for her – all of it.
I am going back into a movie theater to see this movie.

  8. Beth says:

Earring Magic Barbie!! I had that one so I love this look-all her promo looks have been so fun though, I love what she and her stylist have been doing.

  9. Emmy Rae says:

I LOVE America in that tuxedo dress!! Hair & makeup are perfect.

Margot has been fun to watch.

    • BothSidesNow says:

I do too!! I adore America!! She’s such a talented actor!! And the tuxedo dress is chic!

I am very impressed with the promotional tour and while I don’t love every outfit that’s not the point, the references to barbie’s past and present is excellent.

As of yesterday my BFF and I have our tickets booked for the opening weekend. The first trailer didn’t sell it to me but once the second one came out they had my money.

It’s so funny, I had Barbies as a kid but they weren’t my favorite by far – I was a My Little Pony girl. Still, I had a few Barbies and did play with them. One girl on my street had the whole shebang – dream house, car, all of it, every Barbie. Another neighbor girl only had collectible Barbies and they sat boxed up on a display shelf and we were never allowed to touch them. Yet another neighbor girl went by the nickname Barbie in high school bc she was blonde, blue eyed, tan and bubbly and loved anything pink. I’m excited to see this movie! Margot is nailing the Barbie imagery!

    • Ula1010 says:

I was also a My Little Pony kid. I still have all of them including the castle and parlor. Most of my Barbie’s ended up looking like Kate McKinnon’s character, but I had the Day to Night Barbie. Seeing Margot in that outfit, especially the hat, brought back such a wonderful nostalgic ping. I’m amazed at how much I’m into everything about this movie.

I absolutely love the dress as an homage to Barbie. The matching belt and earrings are killer.
